Steve Newing tinkered with his team's formation yesterday and the Town came up trumps with a really decent and impressive performance to record a 4-1 win against Cambridge City.
Opting for a 4-4-1-1 instead of the usual 4-3-3 done the trick especially in the second half where Town were much the better side. The first 45 minutes saw the visiting Lillywhites pass the ball well and it could of easily been 2-2 at the break had Noel Imber not made a great save at the far post just keeping the ball the right side of the line (watch the replay as it shows it was mighty close?). Jordan Lockie and Mark Kirby had put the Town 2-1 up either side of Mitchell Bryant's goal for City.
Liam Hope headed Town's third which was made from Tyler Campbell's inviting cross and the hard working Adam Wallace sealed a good afternoon with a fourth late on.
The game also saw Jonathan Hunt make his debut for the Town as a second half substitute for Jey Siva. The ex Birmingham City and Derby County player nearly made an instant impact when his quick feet carved out a chance just inside the box which was saved by Zac Barrett in the City goal. Hunt, who is 41 in November, looks a very good addition to the squad with a good touch and composure in midfield. His vast experience from the Premier League right the way down to the Ryman League will really be a benefit to the Enfield Town squad. He was a fan's favourite at AFC Hornchurch as he helped The Urchins earn promotion form the Ryman Premier last season.
The man of the match was announced as Jordan Lockie which was well deserved but TheColdEnd must mention Craig McKay who put in a impressive performance at the back.
City went into the game having won four of their previous six league and cup games which makes this result even better reading.
The draw for the 2nd Qualifying Round takes place on Monday.

COMBINED COUNTIES PREMIER DIVISION - UPDATE
The Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League is now well under way with Guernsey, Egham Town, Badshot Lea and South Park currently occupying the top four places in the Premier Division.
Guernsey FC, runaway Division One champions last season, have begun their campaign where they left off with seven wins in eight league games scoring 34 goals along the way. The question being can any team stop The Green Lions on their march up the football pyramid?? They have posted crowds of 1185, 954, 1026 and 1055 in their four games (in league and Vase) at their Footes Lane stadium so far this season.
They are currently top on goal difference to Egham Town (fourth place last season) but have two games in hand over them so in effect could be six points ahead with two wins. What may Egham's downfall is that two of their three defeats so far have come against Guernsey and South Park. They lost at Farnham Town (2-1) on Saturday who are currently unbeaten in four league games.
FA Cup heroes Badshot Lea and South Park follow in third and fourth places. Both clubs have a game in hand over Guernsey so could go level on points with a win.
Badshot (known as The Baggies) have beaten Mole Valley SCR, Folkestone Invicta and Leiston in the FA Cup so far. They travel to Southern League Premier Division Chippenham Town in the 3rd Qualifying Round.
South Park recorded a replay victory over Harefield United on Tuesday night and now play Ryman Division One (North) Brentwood Town at home in the 3rd Qualifying Round.

With their goal scoring power, support and backing any team who finish above Guernsey will have had an amazing season. For TheColdEnd it's The Green Lions who will finish top although I'm sure the other teams involved will want to prove me wrong.

TOWN'S CUP DREAM OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR
A HAT-TRICK BY 'THE BEAST' SENDS BISHOPS STORTFORD ON THE ROAD TO WEMBLEY
For a few moments after Tyler Campbell's superb opening goal the FA Cup dream was on for The Town but after 90 minutes it was Bishops Stortford who left Donkey Lane victorious with their hero being centre forward Ricky Sappleton who bagged a hat-trick. Sappleton, nicknamed the beast by the blue's fans, was a complete handful all through the game using his large build and strength to dominate the Town defence. The away fans sang 'feed the beast and he will score' several times yesterday.
A positive to come from the game for Town was Troy Archer (whom has been banging in the goals for Enfield Town reserves) making his debut for the first team when he replaced Liam Hope for the last twenty minutes or so. Town also passed the ball well at times but failed to work Stortford keeper Jorg Stadelmann, who was making his debut for The Blues, having been recently signed as cover for suspended Luke Chambers and injured Ross Kitteridge.
Many of the starting XI for the blues have football league and Conference Premier experience -Anthony Sinclair-Furlonge (currently on loan from league one Stevenage FC), Johnny Herd (42 apps for Southend United), Matt Johnson (46 apps for Rushden and Diamonds in 2010/11), Jesse Waller-Lassen (released from Spurs academy during the summer), Ricky Sappleton (started career with QPR and moved to Leicester City and Macclesfield Town where he made 29 apps scoring 8 times in the football league...in 2007 he was linked with Liverpool and Manchester United having a trial at Anfield) and Lewwis Spence (football league appearances for Wycombe Wanderers and Crystal Palace). There was also a familiar name to Town fans in Steve Cawley who captained Ryman Division One (North) Waltham Abbey last season and was in the division's team of the year.
In summary for Enfield Town it's no shame to lose to Bishops Stortford whom on this showing will finish well in the top half of the Blue Square North division.
TheColdEnd doesn't think we'll see many better centre-forwards/strikers than The Beast at Donkey Lane this season. At only 22 years old the former Jamacian under 20 international may well still make the step back up to the football league if he continues to hit the back of the net for the blues this season. You can follow him on twitter @sapps10
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS ARE BELOW
inc all five goals scored....look out for Tyler Campbell's finish which maybe a goal of the season contender
It's now thirteen seasons since a team representing Enfield have reached the First Round proper of the FA Cup when Jim Chandler's famous E's team beat Chesterfield at Saltergate and drew 0-0 at Deepdale against Preston North End (in front of 11,566) before losing the replay (at St Albans City's Clarence Park) 1-3 to the Lancashire side then managed by now Everton boss David Moyes.
2010, when Steve Newing took Town to a 3rd Qualifying Round defeat at Blue Square South Boreham Wood, is currently Enfield Town's best FA Cup season.
You can also see yesterday's result was Town's first FA Cup home defeat since Sunday 3rd October 2004 when Thame United recorded a 0-1 win at Goldsdown Road.
As a Town fan said to me after the game yesterday 'there is always next year'.

LOCAL DERBY DEFEAT SENDS TOWN OUT OF FA YOUTH CUP
The youth side's of Enfield 1893 and Enfield Town faced off in an ultra local derby in the FA Youth Cup 1st Qualifying Round on Thursday night. It was 1893 who squeezed through with the final score being 2-1. The home side scored either side of half time with their first goal being a really well taken one by Suleyman Zuhdu with Hallelujah Basmel making it 2-0 after the break.
Town's young players dug deep but were unable to get a goal back until right on 90 minutes with the final whistle going shortly after. Had Town got the goal on 80 minutes it may of been a different story!!
1893's side is in fact the youth side of Chingford based Ryan FC after the two club's agreed a deal/link so Ryan FC could represent 1893 in the Youth Cup. Therefore, many of 1893's side were made up of last season's very successful Ryan FC under 17 side who won the London Cup against Barking u17's. Jermaine Osei played in that final and has since gone on to put in some very impressive performances for 1893's first team in the Essex Senior League.
1893 travel to Wealdstone in the next round.

LANGFORD GO GOAL CRAZY!!
Match played on Tuesday 18th September 2012
Langford welcomed Kentish Town to Forde Park on Tuesday evening in what turned out to be another entertaining game from the Spartan South Midlands League.
The visitors had struggled to find any form until three games ago when they sprung a major surprise by beating Cockfosters 0-2 away (8th September) and followed this up with a home 1-1 draw against current second placed Southall (11th September).
Town's win at Chalk Lane is the only league defeat Cockfosters have suffered so far this campaign.
Langford's form had been reasonable and they sat in 9th place in the table going into this game having won their last two league games 4-0 and 5-0. They had also recorded a 0-1 win at Kentish Town in the FA Vase on the 1st September but had since been knocked out by Codicote 2-0. The Cod Army going through in extra time when they had only 9 men!
Langford absolutely dominated the game from start to finish. The score at half time was only 1-0 but the home side could of been 3 or 4 up at least. In the second half Langford smashed in 8 goals with Kentish getting a deserved consolation goal much to the excitement of one of their travelling fans check out the cheer/scream on the video!! Marvellous support!!
Kentish Town Assistant Manager Lee Okugbeni has since revealed that his side were missing eight first team players and had fielded a very young side so despite the result being a bad one it's not time to panic just yet.
Three of Langford's goals were scored by Kim Forsythe who is currently on loan from Evo Stick Southern Premier Division local rival's Arlesey Town. Jack Gregson (number 8) also put in a big performance in midfield, he looks a very impressive hard working player that can pick a pass, put in a tackle and has an eye for goal too.

ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE UPDATE
Burnham Ramblers lead the way in the early Essex Senior League table closely followed by London Bari, Takeley, Great Wakering Rovers and Enfield 1893 FC. Interestingly the only unbeaten side are seventh placed Bethnal Green United whom have only played three games as opposed to the top two who have played six games. Eton Manor, in ninth place, can also move up the table if they win their games in hand.
Many of the teams in the league have unfortunately struggled with low attendances over the past few seasons. The top crowd so far this campaign has been the 121 people who witnessed Great Wakering Rovers v Basildon United on Tuesday 14th August with the lowest being the 15 people at London APSA's home game against Stansted on Tuesday 7th August.
CURRENT ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE TABLE
Up to and including Thursday 14th September
Top nine only
It's very early days in the title-race so perhaps over the next few months a few teams may start pulling away at the top of the table?? Southend Manor (lost at Leiston) and Basildon United (lost at home to Thurrock) were the last ESL sides in this season's FA Cup both going out at the 1st Qualifying Round stage.
This Saturday some of the ESL teams are involved in the FA Vase with only three league games taking place. All of the league fixtures involve teams towards in the top five with London Bari hosting Southend Manor, Bethnal Green United welcoming Takeley and Great Wakering Rovers travelling to Goldsdown Road to face Enfield 1893 FC in what is probably the game of the day.
Rovers and 1893 played each other in midweek in The Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy at Burroughs Park with the visitors winning 0-3. Rovers boss Dan Trenkel did make a few changes to his team for this one so the result could be a different one on Saturday. 1893's goals came from Jermaine Osei (2) and ex Waltham Forest player Marquin Smith.
Rovers will not want to make it three away league defeats on the spin having lost at Sawbridgeworth Town and Bethnal Green United so far and Gordon Boateng's side will want to end their 3 match winless league run. It all points towards a decent game this weekend?

HODDESDON DOMINATE AGAINST THE CITIZENS
Hoddesdon Town dominated last night's Spartan South Midlands Division One game against Welwyn Garden City at Lowfield and could of scored a few more goals than they did.
The Citizens were missing a few key players and things got worse when their captain and central defender limped off with an injury after only around ten minutes.
It was the first time Hoddy have scored eight goals since the 3rd April 2010 at home against Amersham Town and Welwyn's worst result since the 0-12 and 0-8 defeats to Dunstable Town and Royston Town in their relegation season of 2009/10.
Match highlights are below and from this evidence TheColdEnd can see the home side right up the top end of the table come the business end of the season.

ENFIELD TOWN LADIES SECOND IN THE TABLE
Enfield Town Ladies FC are currently in second place of The South East Women's Combination League after a decent 5-2 win over Crystal Palace Ladies at Donkey Lane yesterday afternoon.
Town were 2-0 up after the first half but the visitors came back to level at 2-2 early in the second half. It didn't matter as Town ran out comfortable winners in the end as they also hit the post and bar several times so they could of scored many more goals than the five they got.
Currently topping the table are Chesham United Ladies who have won four out of four games so far. The teams next fixture comes on Sunday 16th September when they travel to play Brentwood Town Ladies at Tilbury FC. The week after on Sunday 23rd September they are at home against Norwich City Ladies. Kick off is at 2pm.
League leader's Chesham United are away in their next three games against Chichester City, MK Dons and Ipswich Town.
Below are pictures from the 5-2 win against Crystal Palace.

NEVER A CUP CLASSIC BUT THE TOWN THROUGH
Enfield Town went through to the 2nd Qualifying Round of The Fa Cup with Budweiser (to give the 2012/13 season's competition it's full name) after a 2-0 victory over St Margaretsbury in sweltering conditions at Donkey Lane.
The visitors held their own during the first half putting a lot of men behind the ball and relying on getting the ball up quickly to their front pairing of Leigh Rose and Anthony Anstead with goal mouth incidents at a premium for both sides. Both sides had disallowed goals for offsides given.
St Mags were backed by a decent amount of supporters including a lady I can only describe as "THE ST MAGS SCREAMER"... watch the video to see why?? Great to see such passion and enthusiasm in supporting your team!
Town scored twice in the second half via Liam Hope and Tyler Campbell who was rightly declared Man of the Match. St Margaretsbury's pacey winger Davy Edmee had a few efforts which were standard saves for Noel Imber and Anstead had an effort which went wide of the post prompting the screamer to get very excited!! Right at the end of the game Imber made a good save to keep the away side out and the scoreline at 2-0.
In summary it was never a Cup Classic but a job done for Steve Newing's team as they avoided the banana skin of a lower ranked side in the football pyramid they had slipped up on this time last year.
The draw for the 2nd Qualifying Round has been made today and paired Enfield Town with Bishops Stortford at Donkey Lane on Saturday 22nd September. I don't fancy a replay as having to travel to a Blue Square North ground in midweek will be nightmare!! Of course Stortford do famously play in the Blue Square North division but their Woodside Park ground is more local than many of the Ryman Premier Division grounds Town will have to travel to this season.
The Blues are currently in 14th place having won 2 drawn 1 and lost 3 of their league games so far. On Saturday they drew 2-2 at home to Vauxhall Motors.
Their supporters will be grateful for a local game as the Cup game comes in the middle of trips to West Yorkshire to play Guiseley AFC (next Saturday) and even further North for a midweek game at Harrogate Town!! They are managed by ex Aveley and Braintree Town manager Rod Stringer.
Town bagged £3,000 for the victory from the FA prize fund on Saturday and there is further £4,500 awaiting the winners of the game on the 22nd September.

LOCAL DERBY FA CUP ACTION AT THE LANE TOMORROW
St Mags of the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division have already played four games in this season's competition having required replays to get past Kings Langley and Leighton Town.
In the replay against Leighton Town (who play at Step 4 which is one level above them on the pyramid) they were 2-0 down but made a spectacular comeback to record a 2-3 win to set up tomorrow's eagerly anticipated local derby game.
Town were subjected to a shock result in last season's competition against Stotfold (as you'll see from the highlights below) so Steve Newing will have the squad fully motivated and ready to take the first step on what will hopefully be a good Cup run.
KICK OFF IS AT THE USUAL TIME OF 3PM.
MARK KIRBY'S EFFORT HITS THE POST IN LAST SEASON'S SHOCK AT STOTFOLD. HAD THIS GONE IN IT COULD OF BEEN A DIFFERENT GAME? |
All 22 of the Ryman Premier teams enter the competition tomorrow so there is a good chance a shock result or two will occur.

With league fixtures taking a break due to the FA Cup this weekend TheColdEnd takes this as a chance to look at the season so far and how the table is shaping up. Although it's early days you could say it's surprising to see Hampton and Richmond (relegated from the Blue Square South last season) doing so well and currently topping the table. Lowestoft Town are in second place by a point and are now firm favourites for the league title at 2/1 with most bookmakers offering prices.
The TrawlerBoys only defeat came away at Margate whom are one of the four teams left without a defeat to their name. Bury Town, Kingstonian and Hampton & Richmond are the other teams unbeaten so far.
Canvey Island are seventh in the table despite only scoring 3 goals over their 5 matches which is the joint lowest total scored with bottom placed Leiston. Aside from H&R's excellent defensive record they have the meanest back line conceding just 1 goal.
Enfield Town are sitting comfortably in 11th place with 7 points from 15 which Steve Newing will be well pleased with.
East Thurrock United, Carshalton Athletic, Hendon and Leiston are the only sides yet to record a win.
KEY FIXTURES COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER
Saturday 15th September
BURY TOWN V KINGSTONIAN
Fifth v third in the early table. Score draw anyone??
HAMPTON & RICHMOND V LOWESTOFT TOWN
The early top two in the table clash at The Beveree. This will be the home side's sternest test so far and their perfect defence will be on the line
WHITEHAWK V THURROCK
With only one win to their name so far The Fleet, who were expected to do well this season, make this tough trip to the south coast. An away win would possibly set them up to go on a good run whereas a home win would move The Hawks towards the top five
Saturday 22nd September
WEALDSTONE V HAMPTON & RICHMOND BOROUGH
If The Beavers get through their games with Lowestoft and The Stones and still have zero goals in their goals against column they would of done extremely well.
Enfield Town's next Ryman League fixtures come with a tricky trip to Margate on Saturday 15th September and a home game against our old rivals from the Essex Senior League and the Ryman Division One (North) in Concord Rangers on Saturday 22nd September.
RUDI HALL - MR ENFIELD TOWN
It has been announced that Rudi Hall has called time on his career at Enfield Town. Rudi has been a mainstay at the club over the years and can easily claim the title of 'Mr Enfield Town FC'. Just the commitment he has shown in travelling to the games from where he lives on the South Coast over the past few seasons is amazing... let alone the performances he has put in on the pitch.
From all the Enfield Town fans Thank you for the memories over the past decade and the best of luck for the future Rudi.
Below are three videos that will bring back the memories of a true club and non-league legend. Rudi will apparently be playing closer to home for AFC Portchester in the Wessex League Premier Division which is on Step 5 of the non-league ladder. They face a local derby FA Vase game on Saturday 15th September when they make the short trip to league rival's Hayling United.
ENFIELD TOWN V BRENTWOOD TOWN - Saturday 14th January 2012
Watch from around 4mins 10secs to see Rudi put in one of his trade mark tough tackles
ENFIELD TOWN V CHATHAM TOWN - Tuesday 21st February 2012

TILBURY V ENFIELD TOWN - Saturday 18th September 2010
Rudi scored his historic 100th goal for the club in the league win at Tilbury. Watch from around 4mins

HERTFORDSHIRE'S COD ARMY MARCH ON
Mention of 'The Cod Army' in football and many fans will think of the famous Fleetwood Town who were promoted from the Blue Square Premier to the Football League this year. However, there is another COD ARMY in football and TheColdEnd was there to see Codicote take on Wodson Park on Tuesday evening in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One. I had seen Cod play last Tuesday at the ground they currently call home - Gosling Park. On that occasion they were 4-1 winners against Cranfield United
Ware based Wodson Park are under new management for the 2012/13 season and they have also amalgamated with the Wodson Park junior football club. They have a new badge and new team colours which you'll see in the video. They used to play in green stripes.
New manager Simon Riddle has had a tough start to things recording only two draws from seven league and cup games. The two teams had played each other in the FA Vase on Saturday with Codicote winning 1-0 at The Gosling Stadium.
The away side were firmly in control of things last night winning 0-6 and could of added to the score with a penalty from player/manager Liam Errington which was well saved by the Wodson keeper. Even when they were down to ten men, Leon Gutzmore was red-carded for a professional foul of Wodson forward Courtney Clay, the Cod Army looked the better side.
Centre forward's Leeroy Williams and Kane Dougherty look a very decent pairing with Williams really causing the Wodson back line problems with his speed and strenght throughout the 90 minutes. Doughery scored a brace and then unfortunately went off injured at half time. Centre back and Cod captain Ricky Bridge scored two goals as well.
Out of the seven games Wodson have played they have only hit the back of the net twice (against Cranfield United and Langford) and they were somewhat unlucky not to score last night so that is
something to build upon for Riddle.
The commitment of the Wodson players can't be questioned either as right on 90 minutes with Williams through on goal their defender put in an amazing sliding tackle to take the ball away from the Cod forward. Sportingly Williams clapped the fantastic play which was brilliant to see.

BEAVERS KEEP HOLD OF TOP SPOT WITH VICTORY AT THE LANE
Hampton and Richmond Borough kept up their excellent record in the Ryman Premier Division at Donkey Lane yesterday with a 0-2 victory over Enfield Town. Although a defeat for Steve Newing's team it was a decent and encouraging performance from the home side that on another day had chances been taken it would of been different scoreline all together. Bearing in mind both Dave Kendall and Craig McKay (centre backs) were missing through injury TheColdEnd thought Michael Ewang played a really good match next to Mark Kirby. I was also impressed with the visitor's right back Malvin Kamara (number 2 on the video). He has played in the football league for MK Dons, Wimbledon, Cardiff City, Port Vale and Huddersfield Town along with a host of non-league clubs. He also has one full international cap for Sierra Leone so has a large amount of experience in the game.
The Beavers defence has now not been breached for six games (including the last game of the 2011/12 season) which is an incredible record but they rode their luck yesterday with Liam Hope, Leon Osei and Neil Johnston unlucky not to score. The away side's two goals came via quick breaks/counter attacks in the second half via JJ Bates and Charlie Moone. Jon Jo Bates spent sometime with League Two side Dagenham and Redbridge during the 2010/11 season.
Some of you may recognise Charlie Moone from Sky 1's "Football Icon" programme in 2005. He was the youngest finalist reaching the final 20 from 6,000 under 18 players. He has also played for Woking in the Blue Square Premier and has also had spells at the Chelsea, Reading and Crystal Palace academies.
Right at the end of the game Town substitute Mitch Hahn was red-carded as the referee after some consultation with one his assistants adjudged he had kicked out at a Hampton and Richmond player after a coming together on the floor. From the replay TheColdEnd got it is my opinion that Mitch didn't do this intentionally and it appears to me he was just bringing his leg over to get back onto his feet... it was just unfortunate and accidental his boot collided with the Hampton player's face/head. Have a look at the video and judge for yourself??
All the best to Hampton and Richmond Borough for the rest of the season - aside from the return match on Saturday 9th March.
Town's next league match shows how tough the Premier Division is this season as it's a trip to Margate on Saturday 15th September. They are currently in third place and recorded a fantastic 0-2 win at Bognor Regis Town yesterday afternoon.
In between The Town start on what hopefully will be a long road to Wembley in the FA Cup with a home local derby against St Margaretsbury next Saturday.
