TOWER HAMLETS GAIN MEMORABLE WIN AGAINST NEWBURY FOREST ON THE FINAL DAY OF THE SEASON

GAME PLAYED ON SATURDAY 22nd APRIL 2023

Going into the final weekend of the season both teams had a chance of finishing in the bottom three of the Thurlow Nunn First Division South. Tower Hamlets sat in 16th place just above local rival's Hackney Wick with Newbury Forest in 14th place.

For Newbury to finish in the bottom three they would need luck to go against them in a big way with a number of unexpected results to occur so they were all but safe prior to kick off.

The clubs who finish in the bottom three of the division are will be listed as 'possible relegation to step seven' - It's thought this season only the bottom two could go down although this is not confirmed as yet.

After relegation from Step Five it's been a difficult 22/23 season for Tower Hamlets - The appointment of Kiernan Hughes-Mason with Connor French as his assistant in February has seen a marked improvement in form and bodes well for the 23/24 season. The East London side used an incredible amount of 141 players in league and cup matches this season - I'm sure with a more settled squad next campaign they'll be moving back up to towards the top half of the league table.

Hughes-Mason, 31, was born in Hackney and started his career in the Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Millwall academies before being a full time professional at The Den. He has played for a number of non-league clubs including Hastings United, Welling United, Leatherhead and Hashtag United.

French is also a former Millwall under 18 player and has also played for a good number of non-league clubs including Concord Rangers, Tooting & Mitcham United, Dulwich Hamlet and Molesey to name a few.

Both French and Hughes-Mason were in the starting XI for this highly entertaining game.

French netted a hat-trick with Hamlet's other goal scored by Oscar Onuorah - Hamlet's were 2-1 down with only 30 minutes left but ended up 2-4 winners!

In other Thurlow Nunn First Division South news Frenford FC are Champions and move up to Step Five of the non-league ladder for the first time - they joined the Thurlow Nunn First Division South in 2018. They will be joined by Sporting Bengal United who return to Step Five after winning the play-off final against Stanway Pegasus on penalty kicks - the game had finished 2-2. The East London side had lost 7-0 at Pegasus on the opening day of the season!!

The teams who finish in the bottom three and are in danger of relegation are Coggeshall United, Hackney Wick and NW London.

With Clapton FC being relegated from the Essex Senior League and Clapton Community FC moving up from the Middlesex County League Premier there will be two East London derby games which will attract huge amounts of attention next season in the division.
