The 2020/21 Hertfordshire Senior League Aubery Cup started last night with a First Round tie between Premier Division Colney Heath Reserves and Division One Hinton.
Going into the game the visitors had played three league games winning on the opening day of the season by 0-1 at Knebworth before a 1-2 home defeat to Oxhey FC and a 3-2 loss at Evergreen at the weekend.
Colney Heath had drawn their last two games 0-0 against Sandridge Rovers and Hatfield Town. They had also won 0-3 at Ware Sports on the opening day of the season and had a 1-5 defeat at home to Belstone so far.
This was well contested cup tie played in front of a decent and loud at time crowd at the Recreation Ground. Hinton played some good football. They were very unlucky not to score when a near-post header rattled the crossbar before the home side scored via the penalty spot. This followed a coming together in the box which is obscured somewhat on camera - the Assistant Referee who had had a good view of the incident flagged immediately and after consulting with the referee a spot kick was given. The penalty was scored by Jack Woods who was playing in his first competitive game since the lockdown and end of the football in the 2019/20 season. He has been a first team regular at Colney Heath since joining from local rival's London Colney in 2017.
The second half didn't have as many clear cut chances to it and it was the home side who sealed the win right on 90 minutes via a goal on the break from another former London Colney player in Stef Geraldes.
Despite the defeat the visitors can take many good points from this game in their performance against a higher division side - their next game is as at their home ground of Holtwhites Hill in Enfield against Hatfield United on Saturday.
Colney Heath Reserves next game comes on Saturday 3rd October when they travel to Royston Town Reserves.
