LEWISHAM BOROUGH TAKE THE POINTS IN THE FIRST CATFORD CLASSICO OF THE SEASON

It was derby day in SE6 last Wednesday evening as Lewisham Borough played Forest Hill Park in the Catford Classico. The two local rivals share The Ladywell Arena with Borough playing at Step Six of the non-league ladder since the 2011/12 season and Forest since the 2015/16 season.

Forest were formed in 1992 and their name relates to the Forest HIll and Honor Oak Park areas of The London Borough of Lewisham. They played in Sunday football for one season before moving to Saturday football and playing in The Bromley & District League, South London Alliance and Kent County League before their move up to the Kent Invicta League (now the SCEFL Division One) in 2015.

They have played in Dulwich and the Catford Wanderers Sports Ground where they played as 'Catford Wanderers' for two seasons in the early 2000s.

I visited Lewisham Borough twice last season and wrote about their wonderful club for their games against Meridian VP and Sutton Athletic

As is always at The Ladywell Arena it was a lovely welcome by all involved with both clubs.  As the game kicked off there was some singing of "LEWISHAM, LEWISHAM, LEWISHAM...COME ON BOROUGH" and "THERE'S ONLY ONE TEAM IN CATFORD" from one very vocal and enthusiastic home supporter.

Forest Hill Park are struggling towards the bottom of the SCEFL Division One but prior to kick off in this game had one of the best defensive records in the table conceding just 11 goals in 10 league games which on a goals per game basis equates to just 1.1 per game - this was a better defensive record than league leader's Snodland Town who have let in 20 in 15 goals or 1.33 per game.

The problem for them was at the other end of the pitch as they had only scored 6 in those 10 games of which they had only won one - this came on the opening day of the season 1-0 at Rochester United.

Borough were also down towards the bottom of the table winning 3 of their 11 games with 1 draw and 7 defeats - they had lost their previous three games.

With all the rain fall there had been in London over the past week and the fact two games has been played on the pitch in the previous week the surface at The Ladywell Arena was very heavy.

It was Borough who took the game to The Forest with former Croydon midfielder Emmanuel Sontan (wearing number 7 in the video highlights) standing out for me - His positive and skilful forward runs created a number of good opportunities for the home side.

They took the lead through Reon Sailes on 20 minutes and added another from former QPR Academy player Sineen Sineen on 25 minutes.

At half time it really did look like they would add to the score in the second half but credit to The Forest who worked hard in the second half and were awarded a penalty which Thomas Ngegba scored to make it 2-1.

It was Lewisham Borough who held on for a famous victory in the first Catford Classico of the season in front of 72 fans in SE6.

It's certainly not all doom and gloom for Forest Hill Park as on Saturday they travelled to Staplehurst Monarchs and achieved something they haven't done since March by scoring three goals in a game they won 2-3. Devontae Young, who was substitute in Wednesday's game, netted twice along with Abdul-Rahman Sunmonu. The winner was scored in the 90th minute!
