UNITED HIT SEVEN GOALS TO WIN THE WELWYN DERBY

The Welwyn and Hatfield Sunday Football League unfortunately folded in 2017 after 57 years of football with many of the local teams now playing in the Herts Advertiser League which covers mainly the St Albans and Harpenden area.

FC Welwyn (formely Hedgehog FC) and Welwyn Garden United play in the East Herts Corinthian Sunday Football League Premier Division having both moved up from Division One last season. United finished top with FC in the runner's up position. Yesterday was the big Welwyn Derby game played at King George V playing fields.

The two sides had already played against each other in the opening game of the season where FC had won 2-0 thanks to goals from Joe Brunt and Lucas Thurgood but it was United who claimed the local bragging rights in some style with a comprehensive 7-1 victory with goals from Jordan Frowd, Adrain Hamill (2), Nathan Studholme (2) and Tyler Smith.

It was United's second win in their five league games played - they had lost 6-1 last weekend to Wormley based FC Infernos.

The only way is up now for FC Welwyn under the new management of Lucas and Jordan Thurgood  who did play well in the opening 30 minutes of the game yesterday only to concede two quick goals and then never got going again as the scoreline suggests. They host FC Alpha this coming Sunday with United on their travels to current table topper's Allenbury's. This will be a very tough game as they have won all seven of their league and cup games played so far - they beat FC Welwyn 10-0 on Saturday 13th October. They also beat United 2-6 in the Senior Divisional Shield in September.

If you're bored and frustrated of VAR seemingly removing all contact in the beautiful game take a look at some of the good old fashioned tackling in the video below from this game (already viewed 800 + times on twitter) and maybe even check out a Sunday League game near you soon. Keep scrolling down for the 14 minutes of full highlights of the game.
