MATCH PLAYED ON MONDAY 12th MARCH 2018
Wingate and Finchley u23s have had a fantastic season under the management of former Cockfoster's boss Dean Barker with many players standing out and getting a chance to play in the Bostik Premier Division for the North London side's first team.
Last Monday evening at Coles Park the team had the chance to seal the Bostik League Development North title by getting a point or more against Haringey Borough. Going into the game Wingate had 38 points from their 15 games played with a goal difference of +36 with only Brentwood Town mathematically being able to also win the title. Emphasis had to be put on the word 'mathematically' as the Essex side could only equal their current points total of 38 and currently have a goal difference of just +6.
The game played on a rainy evening saw Wingate dominate the game going 1-0 up early on through the impressive Ned Clarke and they should of been at least 2-0 up at half time given the chance they created. Many of the 44 crowd in attendance had made the short journey from Finchley to support the away team.
Credit to the Haringey team who defended well and worked hard managing to equalise via Mohamed Gomes Sanha whilst I was walking round to keep out of the rain so I missed capturing it on camera and then went 2-1 up breaking up field late on allowing Sanha to grab his second goal of the game from close range.
Dean Barker and his team will not be too worried about the result as on another night it could of been an easy win for Wingate taking into account the amount of chances they created.
So now Wingate could officially win the title on Wednesday evening when they travel to Witham Town where a point will be enough. Brentwood Town also entertain Tilbury where anything other than a home win would also see Wingate champions!
