SCHOLAR'S VICTORY GIVES THEM "THE DOUBLE" OVER ENFIELD TOWN

Potters Bar Town's 1-0 victory this afternoon gave them local bragging rights and made them the first team to complete the double over Enfield Town since season 2008/2009 when several teams achieved that accolade.

The pitch at the South Mimms Travel Stadium wasn't in a condition that was conducive to play pretty or entertaining football with the rain that has fallen in the local area over the last week making the surface boggy in places and very boggy in other areas.

The home side could of gone 1-0 up in the opening seconds of the game when with most Towners walking around to take their position on the Potters Bar Kop missed Rob Blackburne make a good close range save to keep the scores level.

Enfield Town plugged away with Adam Wallace and Deniz Mehmet playing wide switching from left to right and Liam Hope up front but were unable to trouble the home keeper. Luke Croll on the right hand side of midfield for Potters Bar Town looked impressive going forward and it was he who found himself in space to make a cross for his team-mate to head wide in the next slice of goalmouth action.

Adam Lee's side got the all important goal on 19 minutes when Rob Blackburne appeared to make an error by calling for the ball but allowed Tom Pett to get to it before him and put the ball into the net.

Town's only real chance of the first half came shortly after when Adam Wallace did really well to cross the ball in from right hand side for Liam Hope to head across only for no Town player to take advantage of the opportunity.

Enfield Town escaped going 2-0 down when Croll hit a great strike from outside the box which rattled Blackburne's bar.

It was then the game boiled over on 35 minutes when Rudi Hall slid into a tackle which became a foul as he didn't get the ball with a Potters Bar Town player on the halfway line. Some home players reacted to the foul which deserved a booking by appealing to the referee. Chris Doyle then became involved with Paul Marks in the melee and rose his hand appearing to punch Marksy in the face. After a period of handbags it all calmed down and Rudi was booked for his foul which was justified and Doyle who had already been booked was given a 2nd yellow by the referee (after consultation with his two assistants) and was sent off. Some Town fan's watching began the debate that it should, if Doyle had raised his hand, be a straight red offence.

HALF TIME 1-0

It was an improved Enfield Town performance at the start of the 2nd half but it just, as has happened frequently in recent weeks, wasn't to be Town's day. The away fans began to sense this when Adam Wallace had a free header in front of goal which didn't trouble the keeper and Richard Morton hit the crossbar which on another day would of hit the back of the net. Town need some luck to go their way!!

The afternoon got worse for Morts who when challenging for the ball near to the corner flag with the home player shielding the ball out for a goal kick he went to in the cold end's opinion to challenge for the ball only for the home player to fall over causing an all-mighty shout and appeal from the home side players and bench over appealing to the referee for a red card to be shown. It was as if Morton who is in no way whatsoever a dirty player had launched into a knee high studs showing leg breaker of a challenge. The referee showed a straight red to Morton which appeared extremely harsh. This can only be underlined by the fact that he will now have to sit out a three game ban whereas Doyle who received two yellows (one for a punch/raised hand) will only serve a one match suspension.

A triple substitution by Steve Newing of Osei, Kendall and Forward on for Hall, Wallace and Campbell failed to give Town a deserved equaliser as The Scholar's defended their lead to gain the all important victory which puts them in 6th place in the current league table. Town are now down in 11th place on 22 points in what you will see from the table is still very tight.

Ex Town player Dan Odamo playing at centre back for the home side put in an impressive man of the match performance for the home side.

FULL TIME - 1-0

*Once again apologies for no pictures or footage as the cold end camera is still feeling poorly!!
