HISTORY MAKERS!! SHEFFORD TOWN & CAMPTON CONTINUE ON THE ROAD TO WEMBLEY IN THEIR DEBUT SEASON IN THE FA CUP

HOPEFULLY HAPPIER TIMES TO COME FOR SOUTHEND MANOR.

The original Shefford Town Football Club, formed in 1910, made some appearances in the FA Cup during the 1950s reaching the First Qualifying Round on two occasions. The club folded in 1994 leaving the Bedfordshire Town with a population of around 5,000 people without a football club until 2009 when a new Shefford Town were formed merging with near neighbour's Campton in 2010 to create the now Shefford Town & Campton.

The club have moved up from the Bedfordshire County League in 2019 and up to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division for the 2022/23 season following winning the Division One play-off last campaign and in doing so qualified to play in the FA Cup for the first time in the modern club's history.

Below are highlights of the Preliminary Round Replay game against Essex Senior League side Southend Manor which was played on Tuesday 23rd August in front of a bumper crowd of 349 people. The first game had ended 1-1 on the Essex Coast in front of a crowd of 88 the previous Saturday.

STORMY CLOUDS OVER SHEFFORD SPORTS CLUB BUT THE RAIN HELD OFF.

The visitors scored an early goal from a corner which Mitchell Arthur headed home. It was the home side who took control of the game with former Hitchin Town attacking midfielder Henry Snee scoring a fantastic goal receiving the ball in his own half and running past defenders to calmly slot the ball into the net. If a Premier League player had scored this goal it would have been replayed thousands of times.

In the second half Scott Metcalfe made it 2-1 with Manor still well in the game. However, a mistake by their goalkeeper allowed Charlie Thake to make it 3-1.  A late penalty from Robbie Farrell wasn't enough for Southend to get back into the game and the final score was 3-2.

Since this game was played The Bluemen have played their First Qualifying Round game at fellow Spartan South Midlands Premier Division side Dunstable Town on Saturday and winning 0-2 with Snee and Metcalfe on the scoresheet once again.

For Southend Manor it's not been a memorable start to their season as they travelled to Bedfordshire once again in their next game after this defeat. They also lost this one to Biggleswade United in the Isuzu FA Vase by the same score-line of 3-2.

Their next two games are away from home at Buckhurst Hill on Tuesday evening and Woodford Town on Friday evening.

As well as the FA Cup Kane Dougherty's side have made a good start in the league winning all four of their games played so far. They travel back to Dunstable Town for a league game next Saturday and then travel to Crawley Green on Tuesday 13th September.

They have been drawn away to Isthmian North side Grays Athletic in the 2nd Qualifying Round. With Landlord's Aveley possibly at home to Romford in the same round Shefford's game could be played on the Sunday. Aveley's game against Potters Bar Town is to be replayed after the original tie was abandoned due to a serious injury with the score at 1-1.
