A MEMORABLE NIGHT FOR SUMNERS FC AS THEY LIFT THE DIVISION ONE CUP

Sumners faced Westmill in the Hertford and District ORC Sports Football League Division One Cup Final at Ware's Wodson Park on Friday evening. In the league game back in November the final score was 6-4 to Sumners and it was the Harlow based side who were successful again in front of a good crowd who made lots of noise throughout the game. It was a closely fought affair with Sumners taking the lead via Josh Knight's low shot from the edge of the box which was deflected into his own net by a Westmill defender. Midfielder Knight is a former Sawbridgeworth Town player and made eleven appearances for the Essex Senior League side earlier in the season.

It was 1-1 at half time when Matthew Moore, who was excellent for Westmill throughout the game, curled a fantastic free kick from outside of the box into the net. It was a goal which would grace any cup final at any level. I don't know much about Moore but from what I saw (number 7 in the video) he could play at a higher level of football.

It was 2-1 early in the second half when player-manager Daniel Chapman was able to score following a quick break from a Westmill corner. It was Chapman's thirty-sixth goal in just his twentieth game of the season which is an incredible achievement for him.

The game could of had a very dramatic end when with the seconds ticking away Westmill's keeper Ed Worby was sent up for a corner and his downward header was blocked on the line by a Sumner's defender. Billy Turner's grasscutter (I'm not sure what you should call it really on the artificial surface) freekick then snuck into the net to seal the game for Sumners to the delight of their fans who had made the short trip from Harlow.

The two clubs face each other in their one remaining league game this Saturday at Westmill. Sumners have a chance of getting into second place with a win depending on Waltham Abbey B's result against Ware Trinity. Hertford Heath clinched the Division One league title on Saturday.
