London Senior Cup Round One



Southall & Ealing Borough (as the club were called from 1975 through to 1980) were a Isthmian side when they entertained East Ham United in this London Senior Cup first round replay in 1976. Southall's Western Road ground has long since gone and the club now ply their trade in the Middlesex County League after financial problems in the 1990's.

East Ham United's Manor Way ground is also another ground to have disappeared as has the club after merging to form Barking and East Ham United in 2001. After the club reformed in the summer of 2006 the "and East Ham United" was dropped.

Two facts about Southall are that in 1977 they sold Alan Devonshire to West Ham United for £5,000 which was then a record for a player leaving a Isthmian League club and future England International Sir Les Ferdinand played for them in 1986 when they reached the FA Vase final which they lost to Halesowen Town 3-0.

The London Senior Cup was much more of a competition to win in these days which older Enfield FC fans will vouch for as the club won the trophy in 72,73 and 76.

The Hammers, as East Ham United were known were playing in the London Spartan League at the time and had put out Southall in the previous season's competition which was classed as a "shock result". The first game was drawn 2-2 at East Ham. The programme reports that Capital Radio DJ Roger Scott will be in charge of the usual Friday night disco in the clubhouse and shows Southall in Mid-table in between Woking and Walthamstow Avenue. Two clubs from this division at the time now play league football in Wycombe Wanderers and Dagenham (albeit with Redbridge).

Southall also featured a 19 year old Chris Hutchings (unconfirmed but i think it's him??) who went on to play for Harrow Borough before joining Chelsea, Brighton & HA, Huddersfield Town, Walsall and Rotherham United. Then managing Bradford City, Wigan Athletic and now Walsall.

The cold end doesn't know what the score was in this match but can tell you that the 1976/77 competition was won by Wimbledon who beat Staines Town 1-0 in a replay after a 0-0 draw.

This season's London Senior Cup is near-enough at the quarter final stage with the following matches due to be played:

RYMAN NORTH WEEKEND PREVIEW

TRAWLERBOYS VISIT SCRALEY ROAD

After facing two home games against bottom of the table Harlow Town and eighteenth placed Romford the seemingly unstoppable Juggernaut of Lowestoft Town travel to Scraley Road to face eighth placed Heybridge Swifts. Lowie have won their last five games in a row with forward Jo Francis as previously reported looking like the signing of the season for the Suffolk Champions elect. However, The Swifts have hauled themselves up into contention for a play-off place with five wins in row prior to last Saturday's 2-1 reverse at 2nd placed Thamesmead Town. Wayne Bond's side have won their last four league home games scoring 9 and letting in only 2 goals so they are likely to give the table toppers a good game but few people would bet against Lowestoft gaining another win. For the loyal travelling trawlerboy fans this is somewhat of a "local derby" match as it's only a 80 mile trip to negotiate. The return match was played at Crown Meadow on the 29th September when Heybridge Swifts went down 2-0.

THE DOCKERS TRAVEL SOUTH IN THAMES DERBY

A Thames Estuary Derby takes place at Bayliss Avenue where Tilbury face the short trip from North to South across the river to play 2nd place Thamesmead Town. Tilbury are the Jekyll and Hyde side of the division with an excellent 75% of the their home games won but only one solitary win on the road which was 0-1 at Ware on the 31st October. Some people predicted The Mead would fall away from the top of the table but their 2-1 win last week has kept them in 2nd place for now with East Thurrock United and Concord Rangers ready to take over should they win their games in hand. The front pairing of Cable and Constable (grand total of 24 goals in 44 league games) should have too much for Tilbury who need a win to keep in touch with an outside shout of the play-offs. The Docker's did give a good account of themselves at W&F last Saturday only losing to a last minute goal making the score 3-2.

TOWN TRAVEL TO WODSON PARK

Town make the short trip up the A10 to Hertfordshire to face the new look Ware. Since taking over in November Tony Faulkner has only lost games to Potters Bar Town, Heybridge Swifts and Concord Rangers, who won 0-3 at Wodson Park on Tuesday night. Top scorer Ryan Wade (6 goals in 9 league games) was red-carded after only 15 minutes and Faulkner was also sent to the stands in what appeared to be an ill-tempered match. The cold end is not sure if Wade will be suspended for Saturday's match at present. Despite their up turn in form Ware still find themselves down in 17th position only 4 points from the drop zone so must pick up points on a regular basis to stay away from the dreaded trap door. Town need the 3 points for another reason, to stay in the play-off zone. It's sure to be another good closely fought local derby game. bwin.com make Town favourites at 7/10 with a home win at 29/10 and the draw being 5/2.

THE BEST OF THE REST

Another local derby takes place at The South Mimms Travel Stadium where Potters Bar Town take on Cheshunt who despite being put under long spells of pressure by Brentwood last Saturday held out for an impressive 0-1 win to keep them just above the relegation zone. Chris Meikle got the all important goal and has now scored in The Ambers last two games. Adam Lee's side still haven't won at home since the 19th September but that stat can be taken with a pinch of salt as the last time The Scholar's played in front of their supporters was when Town smashed them 1-4 on the 5th December. They won the return game at Theobalds Lane 1-2 on the 13th October. The Amber's looked to have rode their luck a bit last week so I think Saturday will be the day for The Scholar's to get their long awaited home win.

Concord Rangers who got back to winning ways in midweek should win at Romford who were beaten 5-0 at Thames Road earlier in the season and despite going 0-1 up at Lowestoft went down 6-1 last weekend.

The Motormen of Redbridge travel to face Northwood who should run out comfortable winners against a side with only 1 away win all season (all the way back on the 18th August at Potters Bar Town).

It's another local derby in East London where Leyton face Waltham Forest. The Stags will fancy their chances for all 3 points as in their last away league game they got a credible 1-2 win at VCD Athletic. Leyton are still without a win at Lea Bridge Road all season and went down 4-1 at East Thurrock on Tuesday.

In the other games Ilford face W&F at Cricklefields, East Thurrock are at home again this time to VCD Athletic who have hit a blip of late with no wins in four following their excellent run of form in November and December. Great Wakering Rovers who have positive results in their last two games entertain Brentwood Town at Burroughs Park and Harlow Town who face Maldon Town at the B-Farm. The Hawks travelling army received good comments from Lowestoft supporters for making loads of noise and the large numbers they took in midweek to Suffolk. The long suffering fans may get something to cheer about on Saturday against the visiting blues.

TOWN THROUGH TO SENIOR CUP SEMI-FINAL

Respect to the 70 fans and supporters who turned out at Goldsdown Road last night to see Town win 3-2 against AFC Hayes in the Quarter Final of the Middlesex Senior Cup. Sam Byfield, Adam Wallace and the returning Stuart Blackburne were on the score-sheet.

We now face the Blue Square South Staines Town at home in the Semi-Final with the other last-four game being Uxbridge V Northwood. Games due to be played week beginning 8th March.

Elsewhere, Maldon Town ran into returning first team forward Scott Vernon for Colchester United who swept them away with a hat-trick in the league side's 7-1 win in the Essex Senior Cup.

Lowestoft Town cemented their hold on the top spot with another win on Tuesday night, Joe Francis was on the score-sheet again, The forward has now scored in all five matches he has played for the Trawlerboys with a current running total of an amazing eight goals. The Suffolk side are now surely Champions elect leaving Town in a group of around ten clubs (all the way down to Tilbury in 11th place) fighting for the four play-off positions making every game from now until the end of the season exciting for Town fans.

TRAWLER BOYS TO MARCH ON IN MIDWEEK

As well as Town's Middlesex Cup game with AFC Hayes on Wednesday there are four league games scheduled for Tuesday night.

It's top v bottom at Crown Meadow when all conquering Lowestoft Town host Harlow Town who haven't played since their 1-1 draw with Ware on Boxing Day. The trawlerboys went 0-1 down to Romford on Saturday but came back to emphatically win 6-1. It's no surprise bwin.com make the home side 1/5 hot favourites with a shock away win at 7/1 and the draw at 19/4.

East Thurrock United will want to get back to winning ways after loosing their 2nd home game on the trot to Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday. Rover's won the match with 70th and 88th minute goals. Leyton who played pretty football without troubling Town on Saturday are the visitors. Like Lowie East Thurrock are strong favourites for this match at 7/20 with the draw being offered at 7/2 and a Leyton win at 5/1.

Two teams who got surprise results on Saturday in Northwood and GWR face each other in Middlesex. The Wood rode their luck in the opening section of their match with Concord who missed some good chances. The visitors then tore up the form book at Fortress Thames Road and ran out 1-4 winners which is undoubtedly one of the results of the season so far. Rovers who put their play-off tilt back on track by winning at ETU as above but have stuttered of late with the excellent victory being their first in six matches. Northwood are unbeaten in three matches and themselves could have a say in the end of season play-off shake up will only be 2 points behind GWR should they win this match. A home win is 11/10 with the draw being 5/2 and an away win at 17/10.

Lastly, Ware play host to Concord Rangers at Wodson Park. Much improved Ware who will finish much higher than their current position won 3-2 after going behind to Ilford on Saturday. This showed Tony Faulkner has instilled some fighting spirit to his side and in Ryan Wade (4 goals in 7 league appearances so far) they posses a much admired goal-threat. Concord who seem to struggle away (only won 40% of games) from home also have an exceptional forward in Lyle Taylor (13 goals in 21 games) so expect goals in Hertfordshire. Ware are a value price for a win at 53/20 with Rangers favourites at 3/4 and the draw being 5/2.

The cold end unsurprisingly predicts Lowestoft Town and East Thurrock United will get comfortable home wins by at least 2 or 3 goals. Northwood's victories at Wingate & Finchley and Concord Rangers are not to be underestimated as visiting teams to The Harry Abrahams Stadium and Thames Road rarely leave with all three points so I think they'll have enough to see off GWR. The game between Ware and Concord is more difficult to predict as the away side are a bit topsy-turvy on the road and the home side are still getting used to a new manager despite some good results of late including the 2-2 draw at home to Lowestoft Town in a game they should of won. I can see this being a scoring-draw or Ware nicking it 2-1 or 3-2.

Finally, Good Luck to Maldon Town who face Colchester United in the Essex Senior Cup in their re-arranged game on Wednesday night.

THE COLD END WOODEN SPOON LEAGUE - UPDATE

Congratulations to Coulsdon United of the Combined Counties League Division One for gaining their first point of the season in their 22nd game in yesterday's 3-3 thriller with Croydon Municipal at Woodplace Lane. It was also the first time they have scored 3 goals in a match this season. That leaves three teams between the Blue Square Premier and Step Six of the football pyramid who are currently without a solitary point. Unibond Premier side Durham City had another bad day at the officer yesterday going down 10 (ten) - 0 at Boston United. The current cold end wooden spoon league table is as follows:

Durham City are still top (or bottom whichever way you look at it) with a total of 5.14 goals conceded per match. Hopefully the long suffering supporters of all three club will each get to see a win and some glory before the end of the season. City face 17th placed FC United who are having a poor season by their standards in their next game, Launton Sports face a tough trip to 3rd placed Cheltenham Saracens whilst AFC Aldermaston travel to 5th placed Hamble ASSC in their quest for either a win or a point. All games due to be played next Saturday.

The opening twenty minutes or so of today's game were very scrappy with neither side having any worthwhile opportunities. Both teams knocked the ball around well with Leyton appearing to be a better side than Cheshunt who Town played two weeks ago in their last game.

Leyton's goalkeeper Elliot Justham is a big bloke and has to be congratulated for taking the stick he got very well from the fan's behind the goal. It wasn't nasty just good fun, What non-league football is all about!!! One comment went "Your gonna let loads in today keeper" to which Elliot replied "your probably not wrong" and smiled. Despite letting in three goals today he gave a good performance and was warmly applauded by the Town faithful at the final whistle. Well done Elliot you are a Ryman League Hero!!

Town took the lead when ball in from the left hand side bounced across the penalty area past Adam Wallace to Ben Hammond on the right hand side. His subsequent cross was touched into the net by Liam Hope just in front of the diving Justham.

The game threatened to boil over for a a few minutes when what appeared to be an excellently timed tackle by Paul Marks was ruled by the referee to be a foul much to the wrath of the Town faithful gathered on the far side. A few seconds later and Leyton midfielder Ricky Edwards appeared to go in late on Marks at the other end of the pitch which was a foul.

Luckily the game settled down with Liam Hope having a shot straight at Justham from a Adam Wallace knock down being the only other memorable chance of the half.

Ricky Edwards playing in the centre of midfield for Leyton looked their best and most influential player. It has to be said Leyton passed the ball around well and didn't just resort to sticking 10 men behind the ball and lumping long balls up field.

HALF TIME 1-0

Town made it 2-0 shortly after the break when from a Michael Bardle cross Liam Hope's shot bounced off the bar and onto the line with Adam Wallace getting the final touch into the net. Some fans thought Hope's shot had gone over the line but it appeared to be Wallace's goal.

Edwards then showed what a good player he was when his free-kick beat Rob Blackburne in the Town goal only for the ball to rattle the cross-bar and come flying out.

This could of made the game a different story and given Leyton a bit of confidence going forward. Despite passing the ball well Leyton had failed to create any real clear chances up to this point from open play with Rob Blackburne in the Town goal a virtual spectator for large periods of the match.

Town wrapped up the match when a cracking shot from Sam Byfield from outside of the box could only be parried by the unlucky Justham with Wallace bagging his brace by knocking the ball into the unguarded net.

Mark Kirby had a headed goal disallowed late on for a soft push and with the game running into injury time Leyton had their best two chances of the game with Edwards seemingly having too much time when getting the ball inside box with only Blackburne to beat only for his shot to be put wide of the mark and centre-back Bradley Falco's header being comfortably saved by Rob.

FINAL SCORE 3-0

Both Jordan Lockie and Michael Bardle at right and left back respectively had good games today as did Rudi Hall in the centre of midfield before he came off. Man of The Match goes to Adam Wallace for his two well taken goals and his all round play contributing to another good team performance. With Stuart Blackburne due back from injury in the coming weeks Steve and Del have a problem that manager's like to have in keeping three good strikers/forwards happy.

THE RYMAN NORTH WEEKEND PREVIEW

ANYTHING BUT ANOTHER HOME WIN FOR LOWESTOFT TOWN WILL BE A SHOCK

Ady Gallagher and Micky Chapman look to have made a great signing in Joe Francis from Corby Town. Francis scored the two important goals which won the clash of the heavyweights in midweek versus East Thurrock United. The victory puts the Trawlerboys nine points ahead of second placed Thamesmead Town with four games in hand and a goal difference of +14 ahead of the next top scorer's East Thurrock United in 3rd place. Division top scorer Sam Higgins had put the rocks 1-0 up on the night only for the champions elect to come back to win the game with midfielder Gary Holt being the most influential player on the pitch. It was the opinion of The Rock's fans present that Lowie could grace a league at least two steps up.

Francis has now scored 5 goals in his 3 appearances for the Suffolk side which is a fantastic return. They welcome Romford to Crown Meadow on Saturday in a match the home side are 3/10 hot favourites to win with bwin.com; Boro who drew 1-1 at home with Cheshunt in midweek are 23/4 with the draw being 15/4. The Ambers who looked very poor against Town recently took the lead after having most of the play in the first half only to be pegged back to 1-1 by the home side. Romford have three wins out of twelve on the road at Leyton, Maldon Town and Cheshunt, All sides below them in the league. The cold end can only see a big home win in this match with Francis bagging a few more goals to the five he already has for his new team.

Romford have beaten East Thurrock United 3-2 so they are capable of a shock result but Lowestoft have only had one off day this whole season loosing 0-1 to Ilford at home. Anything but a home win will be a major shock.

TOUGH TEST FOR THAMESMEAD AGAINST IMPROVING SWIFTS AT BAYLISS AVENUE

Second placed Thamesmead (2 wins in last six) face sixth placed Heybridge Swifts (5 wins in last six) at Bayliss Avenue. Since the 1-1 with Enfield Town on 21st November in a game which most Town fans thought Swifts were one of the better sides we had played this season the Essex side have lost just two games against VCD Athletic and East Thurrock United. The Mead have been strong at home with Swifts improving their away form of late with a 0-2 result at Tilbury standing out which points to this match ending in a draw. A punt on Swifts to get a win at 43/20 may be the value gamble of the day with a home win at 9/10 and a draw being 5/2.

OLD RIVALS LEYTON VISIT GOLDSDOWN ROAD

Town welcome Leyton on Saturday who gained their first point in six matches in their midweek 2-2 draw with Ware. A last minute goal from the home side secured the all important point. Leyton are currently in the drop zone and are having a very poor season. Town are favourites at 7/20 with Ware at 5/1 and the draw being 7/2. Their last two away games have been lost 8-0 and 4-0. Steve and Del know to take nothing for granted and only a good team performance as usual will secure the three points. Leyton played some attractive football in the 8-0 loss at Lowestoft and won praise from Trawlerboy fans for not dumping 10 men behind the ball and hoping for the best on the counter attack. The cold end never likes to be confident or cocky when it comes down to Town but should we play as well as they have been doing (albeit with an enforced winter break) the match should be won. An early goal would be nice!!

THE BEST OF THE REST!!!

Brentwood Town who drew 2-2 with Concord in midweek should have too much for travelling Cheshunt at the Internation arena. The Islander's themselves entertain a Northwood side who won 0-4 in their last match before the new year at Wingate and Finchley. Fortress Thames Road is rarely breached but the cold end can see Wood (who will finish higher in the league than their current 11th place) nicking a point on Saturday.
East Thurrock should get back to winning ways at home to Great Wakering Rovers. VCD Athletic who were surprisingly beaten by Waltham Forest at home last time out travel to stuttering Maldon Town, VCD should win but I can also see a score-draw result occurring at The Wallace Binder.

Spartan South Midlands League Division One Cup Quarter Final

No Surprises that 3rd in the table Crawley Green easily advanced in the semi-final of the competition against rock bottom Brache who are without a league win all season. Crawley Green play at the home of Southern League Barton Rovers and this was a local derby played in good spirit between two teams who obviously had good knowledge of each other. This was further confirmed when the match programme welcomed back the assistant manager of Brache Shane Scott and coach Brian Outlaw who were managers of of the reserve side for Crawley between 2006 and 2009.

The pitch at Shapenhoe Road has quite a steep incline and it was Crawley who played downhill in the first half. They controlled the game from the off taking a 1-0 lead on about 20 minutes with a wonderfully taken free-kick.

Brache played some good football but too many mis-placed passes at the crucial stage made sure they didn't have a reasonable effort on target in the first half.

Crawley looked pacey up front and took a 2 goal lead in at half-time looking confident of winning the match easily.

In the second half Brache resorted to banging long balls up front and into the left and right channels which had little effect. They did show some encouraging signs of good play and didn't appear to be bottom of the table side. I lost count how many times they were caught offside from long balls over the top in the second period.

Crawley wrapped up the game with about 20 minutes to go when a cross from the right hand side was headed into the net.



The players of Brache deserve some praise as they continued to play well and didn't let their heads drop despite being 3 goals down. The management can also be congratulated for encouraging their team throughout the 90 minutes of play. Where some managers would be berating the officials for no apparent reason it was great to see their enthusiastic approach, they deserve to get a win soon. What football is all about!!!

Sharpenhoe Road has echoes of Southbury Road circa The Saracen's era in the mid 90's as they appear to have built a posh looking electronic scoreboard in one corner.

A match of contrasting styles at the recreation ground where the more direct hard working home side played the skillful passing Tigers. Bearing in mind all the snow that had melted over the weekend the pitch was in very good condition for January and it was nice to see a match being played after all the postponements of late.

There was cold wind blowing across the pitch as Tiger's skillful passing play saw them have the best of the opening exchanges with a Colney player heading the ball off the line.

It was a half of few chances for the 42 hardy souls who had turned up and it was somewhat against the run of play when Kevin Ashwood put the home side 1-0 up firing home from about 5 yards out.

HALF TIME 1-0

Edson Cata in the centre of midfield drifting up front for the tigers looked very impressive but the away side couldn't fashion a chance to make it 1-1 allowing Colney Heath to get back into the match. Amodou Gerber in the centre of defence for the home side also impressed with a good confident performance.

THE COLD END IS NOW A FAN OF TIGER'S SUBSTITUTE KYE HENDRIX

The game changed when the tiger's brought on the brilliantly named Kye Hendrix who also sported a Marouane Fellaini hairstyle who seemed to be the player up front Tigers were looking for in playing the big target man up front role. Still Kingsbury didn't really create any good chances until the 90th minute when Elton Almieda let fly from the edge of the box with a great shot which flew past Tom Blackman in the home goal to the delight of the few loyal Tiger officials and supporters who had made the trip up A1. A fantastic goal which on the balance of play was richly deserved.

One of the Colney players then asked referee Mr Trinder if there was extra time??... Mr Trinder replied "Yes" with the player looking disappointed he would have to run about for 30 minutes more.

FULL TIME 1-1

THE PLAYERS AND OFFICIALS CONTEMPLATE ANOTHER 30 MINUTES IN THE FREEZING CONDITIONS

The temperature had dropped during the game and the wind that was blowing across the field was making it more freezing. Lucky I remembered my gloves this time! The crowd certainly wasn't 42 for the extra-time period with some people disappearing into the bar to watch the Manchester derby in the warm.

The extra-time period was played out with a few half chances and Axinte Valentin in the tiger goal pulling off a great save from a shot from the left hand outside the box. Colney had a shout for a penalty late on with what appeared to be a push in the box but Mr Trinder had a good view and waived play on then blowing the whistle a short while later ruling the match should be decided by penalty kicks.

FULL TIME OF EXTRA TIME - 1-1

The first three penalty kicks were scored by both teams with Colney taking the first. Colney's third kick was initially saved by Valentin only for the referee to order a retake for the Tiger keeping coming off his line too quick. Tuesday night sees the two favourites for the Championship clash for the first time in what has to be the match of the season so far in the Ryman North. Lowestoft Town bring their unbeaten away record East Thurrock's Rookery Hill where the Rocks are unbeaten since their surprise defeat versus Brentwood Town on the 18th August. Since then in the eight home league games they have had they have won 7 and drawn 1 scoring 26 and only letting in 5 goals in the process. John Coventry has strengthened his squad with the signing of forward Chris Ellerbeck from Ryman Premier Wealdstone who has played for Ware and Harlow Town along with defender Steve Sheehan from Leyton in time for the big match.

The Essex side will know a win is the only option for them as if the travelling table topping Trawlerboys are victorious they will be ten points ahead in the league with a game in hand. If Thurrock win it'll be down to just four points with the return match due in February at Crown Meadow.

Lowestoft's Gary Holt should be available for selection but has admitted he is open to offers from League clubs. The ex Norwich City, Kilmarnock and Nottingham Forest midfielder showed what a class player he was in the game versus Enfield Town. I'm sure he still has something to offer a league side and if he does leave the Suffolk club their supporters will thank him for his time and wish him good luck.

With the impressive home record of ETU and top league scorer Sammy Higgins coming up against the fantastic unbeaten away record of Lowestoft Town I wouldn't like to predict the result but as stated only a win will be good enough for John Coventry's side, If Lowie come away with a draw I think they'll be very happy!

CONCORD SET TO LAND AT THE INTERNATIONAL ARENA

As well as the big match there is a feast of fixtures due to be played on Tuesday night with Concord the team which most fans think will be the next nearest challengers for the title travelling to face a difficult match versus Brentwood Town. Concord did win at GWR last time out but have a poor record on the road for a top six team. Brentwood have lost their last two games after an impressive run pulled them away from the relegation trap door. I can see this one being a score draw.

Ware who lost to an injury time goal going down 2-1 at Heybridge Swifts (note - they were down to nine men) on Saturday look very good value at 31/20 to win at Leyton who have lost their last five games and are without a victory since the 24th October. Former favourite Bradley Stamp has re-signed for the Wodson Park team in time for the game which former Enfield Town player Luke Marshall is suspended for following his dismissal versus Lowestoft Town.

The Stags of Waltham Forest will be in a confident mood following their victory at VCD Athletic on Saturday (now only Forest and Town have won at Oakwood this season) for their local derby with Redbridge who played their first game in a month on Saturday going down 2-1 at Fortress Chadfields versus Tilbury. The Motormen didn't show signs of rustiness after being in the garage since being thrased 0-5 at home to Lowestoft Town as they went 1-0 up and it was The Docker's two goals in the 2nd half which won the match. Forest are evens for this match.

Romford are also scheduled to take on Cheshunt with Wingate and Finchley taking on Potters Bar Town rounding up the league matches for tomorrow night. Ilford take on Northwood on Wednesday night.

GOOD LUCK TO MALDON TOWN AND HULLBRIDGE SPORTS

The cold end sends out good luck to Maldon Town who make the short trip to the Weston Homes Community Stadium to take on Colchester United in the Essex Senior Cup. The cold end also hopes good fortune is on the side of ESL side Hullbridge Sports who take on League Two side Digger Daggers at Victoria Road in what has been described as one of the biggest games in the club's history.

ISTHMIAN PROGRAMMES OF THE PAST (PART 1)

ILFORD V LEYTONSTONE

THURSDAY 28th AUGUST 1958

This programme really is a classic as it's over half a century old. The 1950's were of course a time of no substitutions with none of your modern day coming off with a slight leg strain ..............if you had a compound leg fracture you jolly well played on and done your best!!

Snow also never seemed to stop games going ahead...Just break out the orange ball and play on. I think players back then would laugh at some of the professional games being called off for "Health and Safety reasons" just in case a fan slips over 1/2 a mile away from the ground.
This was a clash of two teams of that dominated the East London area along with Walthamstow Avenue back in the Halcyon days of Amateur football. You only have to look at Ilford's fixture list for the previous season printed in this programme for proof that they didn't mess around with postponements and they certainly didn't moan about too much football as Ilford had games on Christmas Day and Boxing Day in playing two local derbies against Romford FC.

The match kicked off at 6.30pm as floodlights were yet to be installed at Ilford's old Lynn Road ground. The programme reports of increased admission charges to one shilling and six pence. Whoever watched the game with this programme looks as though he marked the player's performances out of 10, H. Dodkins of Ilford was given a 9 so can be given Man of the Match.

Ilford and Leytonstone themselves merged in the late 1970's and went on to merge with Walthamstow Avenue and become Redbridge Forest and then Dagenham & Redbridge. Ilford, As we know re-formed in 1987 and now play in the Ryman North Division.

What a shame that three great Non-League grounds in Ilford's Lynn Road, Leytonstone's Granleigh Road and Avenue's Green Pond Road are now no more. The only thing I can think of that remains to remind us of these once great venues is Dellow Close off Lynn Road in Ilford which is named after a legendary player of the 1930's.

THE WEEKEND PREVIEW...WEATHER PERMITTING!!

Its due to warm up at the weekend but NOW heavy rain is forecast for the Ryman North country on Saturday. Hopefully it won't be too bad and the snow will melt away and maybe some football will be played at last.

Table toppers Lowestoft Town should win at home against Potters Bar Town, this match has been switched to Crown Meadow on authority of the Ryman League as the pitch in Suffolk is 80% playable at present and improving by the day. It looks as though at least one game will go ahead!!

Second placed Thamesmead Town will be confident at getting their first away win in five since the 7th November when they travel to Leyton who are without a win in eight games and have dropped down into the relegation zone. East Thurrock United travel to Harlow Town in an interesting game which should on form be an easy away win but Marvin Samuel's new look Hawks may have something to offer. Fifth placed Concord Rangers who have a poor record on the road make the trip to East London to face Ilford who don't like scoring goals (only 12 in 10 at home), The cold end predicts the Islander's to gain another away win after their recent victory at GWR.

With the weather wreaking havoc in the recent schedule of matches any of the teams who take to the field on Saturday will be a bit rusty so maybe some shock results are in store should the snow melt away. The Cold End won't go into a full preview as the snow and ice is still lurking around ready to put the dreaded P next to the fixtures on the list.

RESPECT TO THE 'DOVER 22' AND THE GREEN ARMY AT THE TOON

The Cold End salutes the 22 very loyal Dover Athletic supporters who made the 650ish mile round trip to watch their match in the FA Trophy at Fleetwood Town. The travelling fans from the Garden of England were rewarded with a 0-1 win, Fleetwood's first home defeat since the 3rd March 2009.

The Green Army of Plymouth Argyle can top that journey tonight with their trip to St James Park to play Newcastle United. When they get home to Devon sometime in the early hours of Thursday they would of travelled an incredible 800+ mile round trip to support their team in the FA Cup 3rd Round replay.

Both sets of supporters are truly fantastic travelling these distances firstly in midweek and secondly in the horrible weather conditions. True dedication from proper football fans!!!

NO GAMES TONIGHT BUT THE SNOW'S MELTING....COULD THE ROMFORD GAME BE ON???

The cold snap appears to be coming to an end with the snow slowly melting away in some parts of Ryman country. All of the local non-league games were cancelled tonight but with the weather improving going up to 5 degrees on Saturday Town's away game with Romford at Aveley's ground may get the green light. It won't be time to break out the sun cream and Bermuda shorts but 5 degrees will be positively balmy as opposed to how it's been over the last few weeks.


GAME DESTINED NEVER TO BE PLAYED??

Tonight's scheduled London FA Senior Cup second round tie between Haringey Borough and Fisher FC seems to be destined never to be played. It was scheduled to be played at Coles Park but due to the problems with the pitch as "the real White Hart Lane" it was postponed a number of times and a decision made between the two clubs to switch the tie to Fisher's shared home ground Champion Hill which is when the cold snap set in and it has now been cancelled three times at this venue. The game is now due to be played on the January 19th. The winner's are due to face Cray Wanderers in the 3rd round and the winners of this tie to face Croydon Athletic at home in the 4th round.

IF ONLY????

Ex Wealdstone player Jermaine Beckford has been in the news of late with his goal for Leeds United versus Manchester United and the talk of an impending transfer to a "bigger" club. The Stone's will be praying the rumours of a £3 million pound transfer become true as they inserted a 20% sell on fee when he was sold to the Elland Road club. If he does go for this price Wealdstone will receive £600,000 which I don't need to tell you is a massive amount of money for a Ryman League club.

The cold end can't help thinking back to the summer of 1991 when Paul Furlong left Enfield FC and headed to Coventry City without a sell-on clause. If only a 20% fee was written in then who knows The E's as we knew them may still be in existence and maybe even Southbury Road may not have been bulldozed for housing. That 20% may have made the 'irregular balance sheet' vanish and assure promotion to the Conference in 1995. We can only dream can't we??

An interesting fact about Paul is that when transferred from Watford to Chelsea in the summer of 1994 for £2.3 million he was then the record signing at Stamford Bridge. How times have changed in West London???

Despite now turning out for the old enemy Barnet the cold end and Town fans can only admire Paul's brilliant commitment at still playing League football at the ripe old age of 41 years young. A great achievement for such a good player to be produced by the now defunct Enfield FC all those years ago.

RANDOM TOWN STAT ATTACK

With a healthy 41 points from 22 league games so far this season Enfield Town have averaged 1.86 points per game (PPG).

What is encouraging is that in 08/09 and 07/08 the team in fifth position at the end of the season averaged 1.88 PPG and in 06/07 it was only 1.67 PPG. If the good form of late is kept up Steve and Del's blue and white army are on course for the play-offs.

At the same stage last season after 22 league games The Town had only amassed 31 points from 22 games which is only 1.41 PPG.

Currently in the Gold Medal position is Kingstonian's Bobby Traynor who has now scored 97 goals in 134 starts in league and cup (+3 sub) for the his current club. Representing the North Division in the silver medal position is Sammy Higgins of East Thurrock United who has the best Goals Per Game (GPG) average by far. The Rocks marksman is on fire at the moment hitting the back of the net at least once every start in the league. Lee Burns of Premier Division champions elect Dartford fills the Bronze medal position closely followed by Ade Olorunda of Hastings United and Gary Noel of Croydon Athletic. Town's best hope of getting a player in the top three lies with currently injured Stuart Blackburne on 9 goals in 15 league games followed by Liam Hope and Paul Marks on 6 goals each.

ILFORD GAME OFF!!!

As you will all be aware by now this weekend's game at Ilford has been postponed due to the snow. No one will be astonished to hear that every game in the Ryman League has been called off this weekend along with what will be barring a few top flight games every fixture in England, Scotland and Wales. At the time of writing four Premier League games have been called off so far at Burnley, Fulham, Sunderland and Liverpool (Sunday).

Hopefully the ice age conditions will have melted by either Tuesday versus AFC Hayes at home in the Middlesex Senior Cup or Romford away next weekend in the League.

ILFORD (AWAY) - SATURDAY????

S(NO)W CHANCE!!!!!

With the weather still really bad and a good number of football league fixtures being cancelled the cold end can't see the Ilford game going ahead so it'll be another free Saturday for everyone..Mrs Cold End is already drawing up a list of stuff I need to do around the house to keep me busy...I'm busy drawing up a list of excuses!!

Spare a thought for the people of Perth, Scotland where overnight it's forecast to get as low as -15 and they are scheduled to get up to about -11 during the day on Friday. London at zero degrees must seem like Ibiza in the height of summer to them.

ISTHMIAN CLUBS OF THE PAST.....CLAPTON FC

A quick stroll from the Premier League glamour of Upton Park is the home of Clapton FC, Crammed in between the terraced houses of Forest Gate and behind what is now alarmingly becoming a regular sight in London being the boarded up historic public house The Old Spotted Dog which the ground is also named. Unfortunately like a number of watering-holes in the local area The Spotted Dog has been shut for a number of years.

A stone's throw in the opposite direction of West Ham United past the numerous fried chicken take-away shops that now seem to dominate the area is the Stratford 2012 development where it seems money is no object with heavy investment into the future of the area and the so called lasting legacy. The Spotted Dog appears to be a million miles away in financial terms if only just a short distance away from the Olympic area.

Clapton formed in 1878 are one of Amateur football's former greats winning the FA Amateur Cup 5 times in 1907, 1909, 1915, 1924 and 1925. Although formed in the Clapton area of East London they have played at their historic ground since before 1900.

In the early days they competed in the Southern League First Division alongside teams such as Luton Town, Millwall Athletic (now Millwall), Reading and Swindon Town

Then in 1905 The Ton's were founder members of the Isthmian League along with Casuals, Civil Service, Ealing Association, Ilford and London Caledonians.

The club holds the record for unbroken membership of the Isthmian League staying until 2006/07 when due to non-league reorganisation they were moved to the Essex Senior League. The last 30 years in the Isthmian was a real struggle for the club who plied their trade in the lower reaches of the league. Their last season in the top division was 1972/73 when they finished 21st out of 22 clubs winning just 3 of their 42 league games.

* Behind the goal

Since playing in the ESL they have seen average crowds dwindle from very poor to extremely poor surviving on averages of 31 (06/07). 37 (07/08) 21 (08/09) and an average of just 23 so far this season. At the end of the season last year on the 11th April 2009 the club only attracted 9 paying spectators to their Newham local derby with London APSA.

The club have a miserable recent record in the FA Cup with no magic seeming to have been cast over The Spotted Dog ground since 1957 when Shefford Town, St Albans City, Enfield FC, Ware and Bury Town were beaten to qualify for the first round proper. Queens Park Rangers were held 1-1 at Loftus Road and the replay was lost 1-3 in a game held at Ilford's old ground in nearby Newbury Park. Only two games have been won in the competition since 2000 against Long Buckby (2000) and Stotfold (2005).

Clapton are again struggling at the foot of the ESL table this season with only Bowers & Pitsea and Mauritius Sports below them. The Ton's have won three of their games at home to B&P and local rivals Barking and away at Basildon United.

Currently managed by Wilfred Thomas and have the following matches scheduled in the next few weeks to improve their league position.

WEATHER PLAYING HAVOC AGAIN

No surprises that the current inclement weather conditions have wiped out the Ryman League fixture list for this evening. Redbridge are the team who haven't played for the longest not competing in a single game since the 12th December 2009 when they lost 0-5 at home to Lowestoft Town.

With heavy snow forecast for tonight and the temperature set to stay below zero degrees over the weekend it looks as if the weekend fixtures may also be effected.

The cold end hopes it will warm up ready for a football extravaganza away at Ilford on Saturday.

This table shows if the Trawler Boys hit a blip where they loose a few games and East Thurrock United keep winning they could be caught for the Championship. Two key games are scheduled (weather permitting) for the table topper's in the coming week where their very impressive formidable unbeaten run and away record will be sternly put to the test.

On Saturday they travel to fortress Thames Road to face Concord Rangers who with a win and a good run could still have a say in the title race and next Tuesday is the big one at Rookery Hill when East Thurrock United host the Suffolk side.

Then on the 27th February 2010 Enfield Town travel to the seaside in a fixture which has been eagerly anticipated by supporters since the fixture list was published and especially since we ran them so close at Goldsdown Road. The week previous to the Town game The Trawler Boy's entertain East Thurrock United. Could this be six points lost in two games for Lowie??

The Lowestoft management are astute and experinenced enough to know the league is not sown up until they lift the trophy and that there is much football left to play this season. Like most supporters the cold end can only see Lowestoft Town or East Thurrock United winning the league. I think Concord's poor away form will see them settle for a play-off place once again. Enfield Town are on such good form playing some very entertaining and impressive attacking football so we have a good chance of being up in the play-off shake up at the end of the season.

THE WOODEN SPOON LEAGUE (UPDATED)

The cold end published a league table a few weeks back featuring the club's without a win or even a draw this season at steps 1 to 6. I'm happy to report Fakenham Town have now won a game so are now happily out of the running in The Cold End Wooden Spoon League.Here is the updated table as of today:

Durham City still lead the way conceding an average of 4.9 goals per game, their record would be worse but for the demise of Kings Lynn who won 11-0 earlier in the season in a game that has now wiped from the record books.

PLAYING AWAY FROM HOME - SOME RANDOM FACTS FOR A SUNDAY NIGHT

* Grays Athletic don't like playing away from home. Their last league victory on the road came over a year ago on Boxing Day 2008 at Ebbsfleet United 0-1 thanks to Jamie Slabber's 77th minute goal. They only won one more game away from home last season on the 6th December 2008 0-1 at York City with the run now stretching back 23 games. The club have three games in January to put an end to the bad spell travelling to Kidderminster Harriers, AFC Wimbledon and Chester City.

* In contrast Ryman Premier Champions elect have a perfect record away from home this season winning nine from nine games scoring 31 and letting in just 6 goals.

* Ryman Division One South Whitstable Town are shot-shy on the road having only scored 4 goals in their 11 away league games this season. In eight of the games The Oystermen have drawn a blank on the goal-scoring front winning two games 0-1 and loosing another 4-2 in the games they have scored in.

* In the same Division Mid-Table Sittingbourne's away travels are not exactly full of goals with Gary Abbott's team scoring just 6 and letting in only 7 goals in their 7 games. Their only win on the road was their sixth away game at Mertsham 0-3 on the 7th November. At home The Brickies are the total opposite scoring 21 times in 11 games loosing just 3 times.

* Redbridge's Ryman Premier Divsion record of zero wins from twenty-one games in 2005/06 is the only winless away record in a Ryman season since that season. Only Ashford Town in Divsion One (South) this season are without a win on the road so far.

* Between season's 06/07 to 08/09 Enfield Town won 30 out of their 63 away league games.

TOWN TAKE HOUNOURS IN LOCAL DERBY WIN

ANOTHER FOUR GOALS IN VICTORY AGAINST A CHESHUNT SIDE LACKING CONFIDENCE
The sparsely populated stands at the DW Stadium where only 5,335 turned up to watch the FA Cup tie between Premier League sides Wigan Athletic and Hull City wasn't the only place in football where you could see wide open spaces this afternoon. Cheshunt's defence was decidedly leaky with too many gaps appearing for the home player's to expose.

The cold end was running late in company of his cousin who had made the trip up from Portsmouth to see some proper football so missed Jordan Lockie's opener in the 3rd minute. As we walked across from the car park we heard the cheer...to which my Pompey relative replied "Sorry...I've made you miss the first goal"....I replied "First goal, now there's confidence"

All the talk before the match if the pitch was going to be playable following the sharp overnight frost and chilly conditions in the North London area was unfounded as the pitch looked in very good condition which the ground-staff at Goldsdown Road must be congratulated for.

A friend of the cold end when asked about what was Lockie's opener stated that it was a 40 yard screamer..probably the goal of the century. It was apparently a great goal from a bullet of a shot but I'm not sure if it was 40 yards out....I'll never know!! Anyway we were 1-0 up and looking good. Lockie deserved the goal for all the time he has sat on the bench as substitute in the last few months being a real team player.



Above - Mark Kirby's header is well saved by Cheshunt keeper Dodd. Kirby is surrounded by Two other Town player's and no Cheshunt defenders anywhere to be seen indicating how poor the away side were today.

Rob Blackburne was a virtual spectator during the first half but when called into action from a Chris Meikle shot he saved well. The Amber's were unadventurous in going forward and looked like a team low on confidence who have only won one game in their last six.

Town went 2-0 up when Mark Kirby knocked the ball into the net from close range after the ball pinged around the inside of the box. Sam Byfield having another good game for Town found himself through on goal to make it 3-0 but unfortunately dragged his shot wide of the post with only Amber's keeper Luke Dodd to beat.

HALF-TIME 2-0

Town made it 3-0 when Sam Byfield scored with a curled shot just inside the box following good work from Liam Hope to lay the ball off to him.

Sam Byfield then returned the favour for Hope when his free-kick from the right hand side was headed by Kirby for Hope to head home to make it 4-0. Hope has now scored 9 goals in 13 games for Town which is a great return, He is yet another great signing made by Steve and Del.

Paul Marks who looked busy all day in the centre of midfield then found himself one-on-one with Dodd but also dragged his shot wide of the mark like Byfield had done in the first half. Liam Hope could of made it a five-star performance when his looping header looking like it was dropping into the net but hit the bar at the last minute...Very unlucky!!

With the game at 4-0 and won a raft of substitutions by both sides saw the game peter out to a finish.

Another good team performance with four goals form four separate players against a very poor Amber's side who look like they are in for a battle at the wrong end of the table in the second half of the season. They had two attempts on target with two or three other shots off target which never troubled Rob in the Town goal.

One other plus from the game was that Steve & Del dodged the dreaded Manager of the Month award curse where team's loose the next game played. Lets hope the duo go on to get the award for January 2010 as well.
