The Second-Round draw for the Isuzu FA Vase has been made and as usual with this amazing competition there are some really interesting and exciting games to come over the weekend of Saturday 12th November. Here's the draw with a a little preview of some of what I think are the standout games.
There are only four previous winners left in the competition being Whitley Bay, Rugby Town, Newport Pagnell Town and Deal Town.
Hallam v Bury AFC
Newcastle Benfield v Longridge Town
Wythenshawe Town v Eccleshill United
Brigg Town v Cheadle Town
Darwen FC v Thornaby
The historic name of Darwen FC returned to football in June this year as AFC Darwen were renamed Darwen FC. AFC were formed in 2009 after the club formed in 1870 were dissolved. The best run the old club had in the Vase was in the 89/90 season when they got to the Third Round losing to St Helens Town. This season's run equals AFC Darwen's best run in the 14/15 campaign when they lost to Chadderton at the Second-Round stage.
Holker Old Boys v FC Isle of Man
FC Isle of Man, formed in 2019, have already had their best run in the competition to date having beaten Lower Breck and Billingham Town in the previous rounds. The Ravens moved up to the North West Counties Premier Division after winning the Division One South play-off final at the end of last season beating New Mills 4-2 in front of a record crowd of 3,230 supporters. This is a Step 6 v Step 5 game as Holker Old Boys play in Division One North and are currently in 6th place. They will be no pushovers though having beaten step 5 sides Whickham and Padiham in previous rounds.
Emley v Squires Gate
Thackley v Abbey Hey
Prestwich Heys v Whitley Bay
The Heys had a decent run to Round Three last season before losing heavily to Harborough Town - They are currently in fourth place of the North West Counties Premier Division and welcome the four-time previous winners of the Vase who are currently second in The EBAC Northern League Division One. The Seahorses are one of four Northern League teams left in the competition with fellow D1 sides Thornaby and Newcastle Benfield along with D2 side Hornden CW all still on The Road To Wembley.
Barnoldswick Town v Horden Community Welfare
Bacup Borough v West Didsbury & Chorlton
Pinchbeck United v Dunkirk
The Knights have risen from The Peterborough & District Premier in 16/17 to now playing in the United Counties League Premier North for the 22/23 campaign. Due to their promotion, they currently ground share with Spalding United which is around two miles South of the Lincolnshire Village. This is their best run in the Vase to date. They are currently in 14th place of the UCL Premier North. They host Step 6 side Dunkirk who are currently in 5th place of the UCL Division One. The Boatmen have a good history in the competition reaching the fifth round in the 93/94 campaign losing to Tiverton Town and also getting to the Third Round in 09/10 and 10/11.
Newark & Sherwood United v Blackstones
Atherstone Town v Stone Old Alleynians
Belper United v Hinckley AFC
Eccleshall v Coventry Sphinx
Anstey Nomads v Wellingborough Town
Lye Town v Ollerton Town
Rugby Town v AFC Wulfrunians
The 1982/83 season was a famous one of the Warwickshire Town of Rugby as the club then known as "VS Rugby" beat Halesowen Town 1-0 in front of 13,000 at Wembley Stadium. The Valley are currently top of the Unites Counites League Premier South and got to the Fifth Round stage last season losing 2-0 at North Shields. Their opponents are also having a good season currently in second place of the Midland Football League Premier so this is likely to be a very closely fought and competitive game at Butlin Road. The Wulfs lost 1-0 at Rugby Town in last season's 2nd QR so this is a chance to gain some revenge.
Wolverhampton Casuals v Whitchurch Alport
Stourport Swifts v Loughborough Students
Tividale v Highgate United
Congleton Town v Coventry United
Congleton Town had a fantastic run in the FA Cup this season getting to a Third Round Replay at AFC Fylde after beating Abbey Hey, Bootle, Nantwich Town and Newcastle Town. In the last two years in the competition, they have reached the Fourth Round and Fifth Round so have some recent Vase pedigree which the visitors also have. In the 18/19 campaign they beat Leicester Nirvana in the Fourth Round but were removed from the competition, but the tie was awarded to their opponents - they also got to the same stage in 19/20 and the Third Round over the past two seasons.
Walsall Wood v Sandbach United
Biggleswade United v London Lions
Lakenheath v Buckhurst Hill
An interesting game in Suffolk as two teams meet who have moved up to Step Five leagues in recent years. The home side finished a creditable twelfth place in their debut season in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division last season and also had an excellent run to the Fourth Round of the FA Vase losing 1-5 at Rugby Town. The visitors were promoted to the Essex Senior League at the end of last season and also had a decent run in the competition last season beating Enfield, Newbury Forest, Great Yarmouth Town and Gorleston before losing to Wroxham in the Third Round.
St Panteleimon v Sheringham
Whittlesey Athletic v Oxhey Jets
Baldock Town v Newport Pagnell Town
Saffron Walden Town v Leighton Town
A great game in prospect at Catons Lane as two of the strongest clubs in the Essex Senior League and Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division face off. The home side's best run in the competition came in the 90/91 season when they lost to Buckingham Town at the Fifth-Round stage. They also got to the Fourth-Round stage last season and in the 14/15 campaign. Leighton Town have been to the Quarter-Final stage in 17/18 (lost to Northwich Victoria), 19/20 (lost to Corinthian) and 20/21 when they lost to Walsall Wood. Their Fourth-Round tie in the 19/20 season when they were 3-1 down at Eynesbury Rovers and ended up winning 3-4 is one of the best non-league games in recent times.
Woodford Town v Fakenham Town
Romford v Little Oakley
Dunstable Town v Enfield
Another decent game in prospect that should be well attended at Creasey Park and another Spartan Premier v Essex Senior League game. The visitors are clear at the top of the ESL and the home side are currently unbeaten in league games (won five, drawn three and lost zero). With AFC Dunstable due to play a league game at home to Kempston Rovers on Saturday 12th November this game will most likely take place on the Friday night or Sunday afternoon.
Norwich United v Stansted
Tring Athletic v Burnham Ramblers
Stansfeld v Crowborough Athletic
Glebe v Sporting Bengal United
Phoenix Sports v Deal Town
Erith Town v Guildford City
Broadbridge Heath v Ascot United
Athletic Newham v Kennington
Fisher or AFC Stoneham v Jersey Bulls
The only either/or tie as the first game saw Fisher FC beat AFC Stoneham on spot kicks on Saturday after a 2-2 draw where Fisher scored the equaliser right at the end of the game. An AFC Stoneham player had been sin-binned in the 88th minute but was not allowed to take part in the shoot-out which is not within the laws of the game - The Wessex Premier club lodged a complaint with the Football Association and the game will now be replayed.
Bexhill United v Eastbourne Town
A South-Coast derby at The Polegrave which is likely to be a very well attended game. 301 people saw these two rivals play in the league in September which The Pirates won 3-1.
Chessington & Hook United v Harefield United
Wallingford & Crowmarsh v Little Common
Larkfield & New Hythe v Tunbridge Wells
Egham Town v Abbey Rangers
Egham Town v Abbey Rangers
Peacehaven & Telscombe v Bedfont
North Greenford United v AFC Whyteleafe
Montpelier Villa v Holyport
Colliers Wood United v Raynes Park Vale
It's Derby Day in the London Borough of Merton as The Wood welcome The Vale with the visitors travelling the short two-mile distance to The Wibbandune Sports Ground for what will be a hotly contested game with local bragging rights on offer. Both teams doing very well in league games this season with the home side currently in 2nd and the visitors in 4th of the Combined Counties League Premier South. The two teams haven't met as yet this season - In the 21/22 season they drew 1-1 and RPV won 0-2 at Colliers Wood United.
Buckland Athletic v Cullompton Rangers
Mousehole v Hartpury University
Clevedon Town v Mangotsfield United
New Milton Town v Cowes Sports
Laverstock & Ford v Falmouth Town
Roman Glass St George v Corsham Town
Brimscombe & Thrupp v Shaftesbury
Brixham v Andover New Street
Bovey Tracey v Brockenhurst
Elburton Villa v Bridgwater United
Wellington AFC v Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Thornbury Town v Cribbs
