CLASSIC PROGRAMMES - A VERY LOCAL DERBY IN 1989 AS WELWYN GARDEN CITY HOSTED WELWYN GARDEN UNITED

I recently featured a WELWYN GARDEN UNITED programme from 1988 - Here is another with a very local derby as they visited their local rival's WELWYN GARDEN CITY in the quarter final of the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy - 32 years ago!!!  The game was actually played a week later on Saturday 4th February as the game was called off due to bad weather conditions on the original day. The Citizens came out 2-1 winners with goals from Dave Bartley and Terry Hayes from the penalty spot.

SOME OF RAY SULLIVAN'S PROGRAMME NOTES

UNITED were top of the South Midlands League First Division table and were managed by former Citizen's boss John Sneddon the home side being in fifth place of the Premier Division table managed by Ray Sullivan.  A fantastic piece  of history for football in the Hertfordshire town with the line ups including a number of players many people will be familiar with.

  1. What is also interesting about this "Derby" is the fact that United had merged with City in 1973 and played simply as Welwyn Garden for eight years. United were the top team in Welwyn GC at the time as they were in the South Midlands Premier Division and City were languishing in the Metropolitan London League Reserves Division One, playing the likes of Hatfield Town Reserves, Brimsdown Rovers and Highfield Reserves.

I believe some of the WG United people were unhappy with this merger and re-formed the club a year later in 1974 and entered the Herts County League. They folded in 1990.
