THE PROBUILD CAPTAIN GIVES THE GREG CUP A KISS PRIOR TO LIFTING IT AFTER THEIR 2011 VICTORY AGAINST CITY HEARTS.
The idea of the Greg Cup was formed when members of the North Herts Football Association met in 1910 and agreed that a Challenge Cup for all member teams of the association be played for with the unique rule being that 'one a football player had won this prestigious trophy, you could not compete for this cup again' being agreed and approved. Mr TT Greg sponsored the competition hence the name.
In the mid 90s the unique ruling was removed and it was agreed that a player who had won the competition could play again after a period of three years. A few years later the ruling was completely removed.
In 2013 the merged North and Mid Herts Football Association became dormant due to lack of numbers but for the 2014/15 season the Herts Senior County League brought the competition back.
The former winners are below with thanks to Mark who commented with the missing winners from the 1970s.

THE PROGRAMME FROM THE 1978 FINAL BETWEEN IBROX AND CODICOTE
I can't find any other information on IBROX FC but assume with the name they have an affinity for Scottish side Rangers - you'd assume they'd play in blue shirts and white shorts but the programme states they had black and yellow stripes.

Great stuff on the Greg Cup.
ReplyDeleteFrom the 2007/08 North & Mid Herts Handbook the missing winners are
1971 Walden Rangers
1972 Pirton Social
1973 Walden Rangers
1974 Codicote
1975 Walkern
1976 Whitwell Athletic
1977 ICL Letchworth
1979 Marley
One other point, Football Mitoo has the 2012 winners as St Ippolyts, with a 4-1 win over City Hearts. Not sure which is correct?

Mark
My grandfather was goalkeeper for Stevenage Town during their 1919-20 Greg Cup triumph. I also have medals for 'Lethworth Hospital Charity Cup' and 'NHFA Jr. League' Both for the same season.
ReplyDeleteHi David. that is amazing. A medal over 100 years old with lots of history attached to it as well as the sentimental value to you and your family. Keep it safe.
