BELARUSIAN PREMIER LEAGUE KICKS OFF TODAY
The 2020 Belarusian Premier League kicks off it's season today - It's the 30th season of the competition. Dynamo Brest are the current champions - they broke the domiation of BATE Borisov who won the title thirteen times in a row between 2006 to 2018.
The three promoted sides in the division are FC Belshina Bobruisk (Champions of the First League), FC Smolevichi (2nd) and Rukh Brest (3rd).
Belshina Bobruisk were league champions in 2001 and also won the national cup in 1997, 1999 and 2001.
There are four teams in the Capital City of Minsk being Dynamo, Energetik, Isloch and Minsk. The top team will qualify of the UEFA Champions League First Qualifying Round with second and third places going to the new UEFA competition for 20/21 being the Europa Conference League where they will enter in the Qualifying Rounds.
The bottom two clubs are relegated with the third bottom club playing off against the third placed team in the First League.
The top scorer for last season was Ilya Shkurin who scored 19 goals from Energetik-BGU. He transfered to Dynamo Brest in January but then on the very next day joined Russian side CSKA Moscow.
FC Torpedo Minsk withdrew from the league halfway through last season with their remaining matches being awarded 0-3 wins to the their opponents.
Another team who were relegated last season were Dnyapro Mogilev who were only founded in early 2019 as a result of merger between Dnepr Mogilev and Luch Minsk. The new club took Luch's place and licence to play in the top division keeping only a few of the Dnepr players. Following the relegation the club disbanded and Dnyapro Mogilev were re-established to play in the second league.
Gomel were the third side relegated who Liverpool fans will remember for their Europa League tie in 2012 - they were winners of the league in 2003 and runner's up in 2007.
