There have been two extremely important games at the top of the Evo-Stik Southern Division One (Central) over the past few weeks. On Saturday Peterborough Sports won 1-3 at Corby Town in front of an amazing crowd of 933 with Sports previous game at home against Bromsgrove Sporting which they lost 1-2 in front of 391 people.
The Turbines, as Sports are nicknamed, have only lost three league games so far this season - two have come against their title rival's Bromsgrove Sporting and one a surprise defeat away at Aylesbury.
With three games in hand and two points behind Sporting they will be considered the favourites for the title at present. The thin line between finishing top and runner's up might come down to Bromsgrove's two heavy defeats in row in September - 1-5 away at Bedford Town and 0-6 away at Corby Town who are the outsiders of the top three at present on 61 points. They have a tough away trip to play-off chasing Thame United this Saturday who then welcome Peterborough Sports next Tuesday.
It's been a rapid rise for Peterborough Sports who moved up from the Peterborough and District League to the United Counties League Division One in 2013/14 and then won the title in 2015/16 scoring an astonishing 140 goals in 36 games. In 2016/17 they won the Premier Division scoring 150 in 42 games with a total of 112 points on the board. Last season they finished 12th in the Evo Stik Northern Premier League Division One (South).
Bromsgrove Sporting, formed in 2009 as a supporter's consortium with a plan to buy Bromsgrove Rovers and take them out of administration. When the plan fell through and another owner for the former Conference side was found the new club was created. Rovers were expelled from the Southern League in August 2010 which allowed Sporting sole use of the Victoria Ground.
Starting in the Midland Combination Division Two in 2010/11 the new club have seen numerous promotions - If they do go up this season it'll be their third in as many seasons. They went through the 2016/17 Midland League Division One campaign unbeaten winning thirty-three and drawing five of their thirty-eight games played.
Corby Town finished sixth in the 2009/10 Conference North missing out on a play-off spot by just two points. They have since been a 'yo-yo club' being relegated in 2013, promoted in 2015 at Champions of the Southern League and then relegated again in 2016 and 2017.
