TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH - ALMOND TREE PICK UP THE THREE POINTS AT KIMPTON

It was a top of the table clash at an extremely chilly Kimpton Recreation Ground this morning as second placed Kimpton hosted table topper's Almond Tree in a Hitchin Sunday League Division Three game.

I don't think nothing could sum up the wonderful world of Sunday football than the away side warming up taking random pot shots at their keeper whilst awaiting one of their players to turn up to make it to eleven players to start the game. One smokes a cigarette in the cold January air looking across at a Kimpton player nervously using two cones to pick up some dog pooh a highly irresponsible owner has left right in the middle of the pitch - people who do this need to have a good look at themselves as it's just bang out of order - CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG!

The game was scheduled to kick off at 10.30am but finally got underway at 10.43am with Almond Tree starting with ten players and the hosts having the luxury of multiple substitutes. Despite the sun shinning there was biting frosty wind blowing across the pitch made conditions very difficult and for it to feel below freezing for those brave (or mad!) enough to turn up and watch. The visitor's had eleven men at just gone 11am when a car arrived and the delayed player (Tanake Chitate) jumped out of the passenger seat and straight on to the pitch.

The home side took a very early lead with a header from just in front of the penalty spot following a looping cross from the right hand side. They were the better side in the first half and could of had a few more goals with one talking point being when Almond's keeper (Sean Glennon) saved a shot and appeared to have one hand on the ball with the Kimpton player challenging and winning the ball to place it into the net. The referee didn't give the goal as it looked like Glennon had control of the ball between his hand the playing surface albeit only for a second or so.

In the second half Almond Tree scored early on when a corner kick hit the lower part of the far post and bounced out into the penalty box for James 'Dougie' Douglas to place a rolling shot into the corner of the net.

It seemed to get colder as the match went on but Almond Tree warmed themselves up with two further goals to make it a 1-3 victory. It could have been different as the visitors cleared an effort off the line and Sean Glennon made a great save in the same passage of play.

Mark Gentleman bravely latched on to a through ball with the Kimpton keeper challenging him to make it 1-2 and Chitate got his reward for getting to the game with a well taken later goal which was a nicely placed shot into the corner of the net from just inside the box.

Almond Tree have now won ten and drawn one of their eleven league games played - their only dropped points came in a 2-2 draw against The Albion.

The favourites for the title have to be MBDA who overtook Kimpton to move into second place with a 11-0 demolition of Ashwell today. They have won all of their seven league games played so far. They travel to Kimpton next Sunday whilst Almond Tree are away at Letchworth United. Almond Tree are currently ten points ahead of MBDA with the two title rivals yet to face each other.

JUST THE GOALS

It was an entertaining game between two good sides - I'm not sure the videos will get as many views as the last time I saw Kimpton play in November 2017 when Sean Norris scored THAT GOAL which has now been viewed across various social media sites over seven million times! HASHTAG VICTORY MOVES THEM BACK TOP OF THE TABLE

TOM WILLIAM'S CHALLENGE ON LUKE SKINNER EARLY IN THE GAME

Halstead Town ended Harwich and Parkeston's incredible twelve match winning record with a 2-0 win on Friday night to put themselves top of the Thurlow Nunn First Division South on Friday evening which meant today's game between second placed Hashtag United and third placed White Ensign was arguably the most important game of the season so far for both sides.

It was a highly entertaining first half which at times threatened to boil over at times with Hashtag's Tom Williams challenge on White Ensign's Luke Skinner in the opening moments causing a little bit of pushing between players. The former professional, most known for his time with Peterborough United, was booked after the incident.

HASHTAG'S FORMER REDBRIDGE AND EAST THURROCK UNITED DEFENDER SIMON PEDDIE (2) GOES UP FOR A HEADER FROM ONE OF THEIR MANY FIRST HALF CORNERS

Hashtag's Jack Harrison was then booked for a high footed challenge on Bradley Gates which some people standing close to where I was thought could even have been a red card offence.

The home side were much the more dominant and forced a number of corners with Harry Honesty causing lots of problems with his pace and trickery on the left hand side. Just before the half hour mark it was 1-0 when Ensign defender Dave Limber clipped Neil Richmond inside the box, who was through on goal, for a penalty kick to be given. Honesty scored the resulting spot kick to the delight of most of the 150 crowd watching the game at Coles Park.

TWO PLAYERS WHO IMPRESSED ME ON THE DAY WERE HASHTAG'S LEFT MIDFIELDER/WINGER HARRY HONESTY AND WHITE ENSIGN'S LEFT BACK THANDO MOYO. MOYO SHOWED A GREAT TOUCH A FEW TIMES - I THINK HE MIGHT BE BETTER USED FURTHER UP THE PITCH FOR HIS SIDE.

When the visitors did get the ball forward they only really had half chances with Luke Skinner and Dom Locke having the ball to feet in the box but for Hashtag keeper Jamie Jackson to slide out to claim the ball well and with authority.

It was 2-0 on 42 minutes when former Thurrock and Tilbury player Ross Gleed was put through on a quick break from a White Ensign corner to slot the ball home past Tim Pitman.

Not long after the score got worse for the visitors when Honesty put a fantastic ball across from the left hand side for Neil Richmond to tap home a third for the home side.

With the half time score 3-0 it was going to be very difficult for the visitors to get back into the game and the second half played in the rain was mostly a non-event with only a few real chances created.

White Ensign did have a few efforts to score with skillful midfielder Jack McWee (who has played for Tilbury in the Bostik League) unlucky from a free kick which nearly caught out Jackson in the Hashtag goal  and Locke's powerful shot pushed over the bar.

Hashtag manager Jay Deveraux will be very pleased with the result and the performance from his side particularly the first half. The win puts them back top of the table three points ahead of Halstead Town.

Hashtag United's next game is a visit to Wivenhoe Town on Saturday 2nd February. The Dragons lost 2-0 to May and Baker's today which was their eleventh league defeat in a row. Ensign will look to get back to winning ways on the same day when they entertain Brightlingsea Regent Reserves.

IT'S GOOD TO SEE WOODFORD UNITED ON THE WAY BACK UP

Woodford United left the Southern League at the end of the 2012/13 after a season of forty-two defeats in as many matches and then in the 2013/14 campaign they played two steps below in the United Counties League Division One winning just one league game of forty-two played letting in 223 goals!

The Northamptonshire side had better seasons in 14/15 and 15/16 finishing 14th in both before winning just three of thirty-six games in 2016/17. They then dropped down into the Northants Combination Premier Division for the 2017/18 campaign and finished eighth of thirteen teams.

This season United are sitting top of the table eight points ahead of their nearest challengers 'Kettering Nomads' who have four games in hand. The two title challengers face off against each other in a few weeks time on Saturday 16th February which should be a great game.

Nomads have games in hand due to their continuing participation in the Northamptonshire FA Junior Cup. It's a great day for the league tomorrow as three teams are represented in the Semi-Final. Nomads host United Counties League Division One side Sileby Rangers whilst James King Bilsworth entertain Harpole.

It's a huge weekend in the Thurlow Nunn First Division South as tomorrow evening Halstead Town welcome Harwich and Parkeston followed by Hashtag United entertaining White Ensign on Saturday afternoon.

The Shrimpers, in fourth place, are on an incredible run of twelve league wins in a row go to Halstead Town who recorded a good 0-5 win at Fire United who are struggling at the wrong end of the table - Thomas Cook scored a hat-trick in this game.

Hashtag United are still top of the division but should their visitors win on Saturday they will over take them to go into first place.

May and Baker, who have a 100% winning record at home, could still crash the title race if they win their games in hand but they did lose their last game 1-0 at Harwich and Parkeston. They host Wivenhoe Town at the weekend who have lost their last ten league games in a row.

There were only two games in the Bostik Premier tonight with Wingate and Finchley's home game against Tonbridge Angels a late call off due to the snow.

Dorking Wanderers made it three wins in a row to keep the pressure up on league leader's Haringey Borough with a 1-0 home win against Enfield Town thanks to Luke Moore's 79th minute goal. Despite the snow and cold weather there was a decent crowd of 404 at Meadowbank for the game.

Elsewhere, Worthing won 0-2 at Brightlingsea Regent to end a run of three defeats. Ollie Pearce and Jalen Jones scored the all important goals for the visitors. Jones is a recent recruit for The Rebels having joined at the beginning of January - He played some games for Merstham last season in the Bostik Premier and had recently been playing for Southern Combination Premier Division side Eastbourne United.

Third placed Lewes could move closer to the top two if they win their home game against seventeenth placed Margate tomorrow.

On Saturday top of the table Haringey Borough have an away trip to Tonbridge Angels with Dorking Wanderers visiting Potters Bar Town. After a poor run of form Angels have won their last two games 3-2 (versus Kingstonian) and 4-3 (at Bishops Stortford) with former Borough striker Chinedu McKenzie scoring three goals.

SOME FACTS AND STATS

Dorking Wanderers and Merstham are the form sides of the division both winning four and drawing two of their last six games.

Potters Bar Town have the worst form over the last six games losing five and drawing one which came against Bognor Regis Town in their last game.

Dorking Wanderers have scored the most goals in the last six games (14) with Wingate and Finchley letting in the most (17).

Both Margate and Wingate and Finchley are without a win in six games.

Merstham have the best winning run at present - they are without a defeat in eight league games - The Moatsiders entertian AFC Hornchurch on Saturday.

A NEW WALTHAMSTOW AVENUE PLAYING SUNDAY FOOTBALL

The name of 'Walthamstow Avenue' disappeared from football way back in 1988 when the historic club merged with Leytonstone/Ilford who later became Redbridge Forest. A modern day club was formed in 2000 playing at Town Mead in Waltham Abbey and did play in the Middlesex County League in the 03/04 season before merging with Walthamstow Pennant who later became Mauritius Sports.

A new 'Walthamstow Avenue' club has been formed in 2018 and have been playing in the Essex Sunday Corinthian Football League Division Two with home fixtures being held at The Leyton County Ground which is a short walk away from Leyton Orient's ground.

The club are looking for sponsorship so if you are a local business why not contact them and give them some much needed support - details below.

There are still many games to play in the Bostik Premier battle to avoid relegation but it's Whitehawk who are currently bottom. They have recently benefited from Vanarama National South side Welling United's (managed by former Hawk's boss Steve King) recent budget cuts with the signings of midfelder/striker John Paul Kissock and defender Yannis Ambroisine.

Both have played for the Sussex side before with JP making 33 appearances in their 2014/15 Vanarama South play-off season and Ambroisine signing from Leatherhead midway through last season playing 22 games before moving to The Wings during the summer.

The results have been much more positive for Jude MacDonald's side with two wins and a draw in their last six games. Their 1-3 win at Kingstonian on Saturday was really impressive and they will look to build on this when they host Carshalton Athletic next Saturday.

Just above The Hawks are The Hawks. Harlow Town have six wins from their twenty-six league games so far but like Whitehawk have improved of late with some good results. Going in the last 20 minutes of their game at title challenging Dorking Wanderers at the weekend they were 2-3 up but goals from David Ray (79th min), Matthew Briggs (90 mins) and Luke Moore (in injury time) made the result look comfortable for the home side which obviously doesn't tell the story of the game. This came on the back of a fantastic 2-1 home win over Haringey Borough last weekend.

Matthew Foy, currently on loan from League Two side Cambridge United, scored twice for The Hawks in Saturday's game.

The third team currently occupying the relegation zone are Wingate and Finchley who parted company with Manager Glen Little who had only been in charge since the end of October when Nicky Shorey had stepped down after joining the club with Little on the coaching staff at the beginning of October. He had replaced Keith Rowland who had left the club after a three year spell in charge.

The blues have brought in former director of football Dave Norman who will oversee things in the short term. He is also currently working as 'Executive Director Sport & Education' for Rhyl FC who are currently third in the Huws Gray Alliance League which is step two on the Welsh league system.

Wingate have been shipping goals of late which is one of the first things they will need to stop should they wish to beat the drop. They have let in seventeen goals in their last six league games of which five have been defeats. Their next two league games come at home to Tonbridge Angels (tomorrow evening) and Brightlingsea Regent (on Saturday).

WINGATE & FINCHLEY, HARLOW TOWN AND WHITEHAWK CURRENTLY OCCUPY THE BOTTOM THREE BUT WHO WILL AT THE END OF THE SEASON?

Burgess Hill Town, AFC Hornchurch, Margate and Potters Bar Town are just above the relegation zone.

Margate made a double signing prior to Saturday's narrow 1-0 defeat at top of the table Haringey Borough. Bradley Stevenson joins on an initial month long loan from League One side Gillingham - The midfielder has recently spent a loan spell with Bostick South-East side Cray Wanderers and has played in some Gillingham's checkatrade trophy games this season. Also joined on loan for the rest of the season is Crystal Palace winger Joseph Hungbo, 19, who has been scoring goals in The Eagles various academy sides.

Stevenson started the game at Coles Park with Hungbo coming off the bench.

The Scholars have recently announced a fund raising appeal to raise £10,000 which will put towards necessary ground improvements needed to meet the Football Association requirement for Step three. They need to add a stand with 100 seats and a further covered stand for 100 spectators before the deadline of 31st March or they will be relegated at the end of the season.

With regular goalkeeper Berkley Laurencin suspended joint manager's Lee O'Leary and Scott Cousins have brought in Nik Tzanev on loan from League One side AFC Wimbledon. Tzanev was born in New Zealand and came through the Brentford academy and made his full international debut in June 2018 when New Zealand won 1-0 over Chinese Taipei in the 2018 Intercontinental Cup. Myer Bevan, who was with the Vancouver Whitecaps, scored the only goal in that game.

They have also signed Ben Ward-Cochrane who was with the club in their successful 2017/18 promotion season. He joins from Bostik South-Central side Hertford Town and scored in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Bognor Regis Town which ended a run of five successive losses for the club.

THE DUCKS & THE CITIZENS ENDS ALL SQUARE

BEN ANDREOS AND DEAN BARKER YESTERDAY

Welwyn Garden City welcomed Aylesbury United yesterday as Dean Barker took charge of his second game in charge of The Citizens. It was only last Friday that Barker along with his coaching staff of Gary Simmonds, Ben Andreos and Chris Stead had joined the Hertfordshire club after Adam Fisher's much talked about departure along with most of the first team squad.

Former Cockfosters, Wingate and Finchley u23 and Northwood boss Barker had only been given a few days to put a team together before their midweek home game against Sutton Coldfield Town which they got a well deserved draw from with the visitors only scoring the equaliser late in the game.

There were four debutants for the home side in Isaac Ebelebe (signed from Bostik Premier Wingate and Finchley where he had made 12 appearances this season), Ivan Aggawakah (signed on loan from Barnet's academy squad), Charlie Pattison (form MK Dons academy squad) and Okem Chime (also from Barnet's academy squad).

The Ducks came to Herns Way with a topsy turvy up and down look to their form - after winning the Aylesbury derby on New Years Day they had drawn 1-1 at Barton Rovers before losing heavily (1-4) at home to Didcot Town last weekend.

On an extremely chilly afternoon the first half saw Aylesbury have lots of possession but little or no goal mouth action - Centre Forward Tre Mitford held the ball up well at times and worked hard making runs with Max Hercules also looking decent on the left hand side of midfield. The best chance fell to Harry Jones whose shot rebounded off the cross bar which was flagged for offside so if it had of gone in it would of counted.

The Citizen's defended well and looked organised at the back which the players along with Barker and his coaching staff can take many positive points from.

As the first half continued Welwyn's former Royston Town player Romelle Alomenu received the ball more on the right hand side of midfield and he put in a number of good crosses.

The second half was more entertaining with The Ducks looking the more dangerous going forward but it was Jordan Edwards who so very nearly broke the deadlock for the home side. Archie Davis in the away goal had no chance saving the former Haringey Borough player's looping shot from outside of the box which agonisingly crashed against the post.

United where then awarded a penalty kick when Tre Mitford who chased a long ball closely followed by Taishan Griffith whose clumsy challenge just inside the box was adjudged by the referee to be a foul. Ollie Hogg's resulting spot kick rebounded off the left hand post to keep the game goal-less.

Mitford had another great chance when his neat turn and shot in the box came back on the right hand post. It was then most of the 152 supporter's present thought the game was destined to end 0-0.

The Citizens goal keeper Lewis Todd made two more good saves towards the end of the match and kept a well deserved clean-sheet for the home side.

It was a tough call give a man of the match award but for me United's Tre Mitford with his hard work running the channels up front tipped the balance for me. He did everything but score a goal.

I must give special mention to two players on opposing sides and at opposite ends of their career both playing in midfield. Forty-one year old Greg Williams never stopped working for The Ducks - Many players his age have long since given up so to be still on the pitch on a cold afternoon representing  the club he loves can only be admired.  For The Citizens, Charlie Pattison, who has only just turned eighteen years old looks a very impressive player with a great touch and range of passing - The experience he gains playing for Welwyn Garden City will only be of benefit to him and his parent club in League Two side MK Dons.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Aylesbury United didn't draw any of their first eighteen league games but three our of their last five have now ended all square. Their next game comes at home against Yaxley who they beat 3-7 back in September.

Dean Barker's new look side have their toughest game yet on Tuesday evening (weather permitting) when Corby Town visit Hertfordshire. The Steelmen are currently in third place in the Evo Stik Southern League Division One (Central) and have won five of their last six league games. They comfortably won 1-4 at Aylesbury FC yesterday with the experienced Elliott Sandy netting a hat-trick.

If you are local to Welwyn Garden City please give The Citizens some much needed support.
