EDGWARE TOWN RECORD VALUABLE VICTORY AT BROXBOURNE BOROUGH

Match played on Tuesday 21st February 2017

It's been a real struggle for the first team of FC Broxbourne Borough this season but the fact they are playing in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division is something to celebrate. Over the summer of 2016 it was announced the club would not field a first team for the campaign following the departure of manager Frank Piazza along with many players but in a dramatic u-turn the club announced the senior-team would continue following a lengthy meeting.

Terry Gritton was appointed manager and took on the task of building a squad ready for the season. Borough went into this game bottom of the table on just three wins from twenty-nine games played with Edgware Town who had won seven of their twenty-eight games played who were still in danger of finishing in the bottom two and being relegated back to Division One of the SSML.

This game saw Borough include new signing Jeff Okirie (from Hadley) leading the line up front along with a line-up that included James Kelly, Garvey Tulloch-Jordan (sub) and Jay Batchelor (sub) who were members of the club's history making under 18 side who have recently made it all the way to the FA Youth Cup Fifth Round.

Town are managed by ex Enfield Town fan's favourite Fabio Valenti and included a number of ex Town players in their line-up such as Paul Marks (playing in a centre-back partnership with the non-league veteran Fergus Moore), George McCluskey and Adam Wallace who started on the bench.

Some of the crowd of 45 people gather to watch the teams line-up last Tuesday - FC Broxbourne Borough need your support if you are local to Goffs Lane.

The game was played in front of a few less spectators than the 1000+ who saw the under 18's FA Youth Cup Fourth Round tie against Yeovil Town as only 45 people were present with a decent following from Edgware.

The home side were marginally the better and could of been one or two goals up at half time but it was 0-0 at the break. They got their break through on the hour mark when Okirie received a through ball looking just on side and was able to compose himself and pass the ball into the back of the net past Cain Davies in the Edgware goal.

Unfortunately for boss Gritton they were unable to hold on to record their first victory in eleven league games as Edgware came back with Billal Butt (via the penalty spot) and Ethan Mooney scoring to earn three valuable points for The Wares.

Since this game was played FC Broxbourne Borough lost to Holmer Green on Saturday (0-2) and have parted company with Terry Gritton who has been replaced by Roy Bleau who has been the under 18s side who had the excellent FA Youth Cup run.

There has been some brilliant news for the club as one of the under 18's star player's Alie Bangura has recently gone on trial at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday and looks to have a big future in the game.

Bleau faces two tough away trips in his first two games in caretaker charge at Wembley (Tuesday 28th February) and Tring Athletic (Saturday 11th March).

Looking at the league table (only the bottom two go down) it maybe a little too late to think about staying up but the future does look bright for the club with many young players looking to break through to the first team. If you are local to Goffs Lane why not pay them a visit?

The Wares run title favourite's London Colney close in a 2-3 loss at the weekend - their next game is an away trip and local derby Challenge Trophy Third Round game at Hadley on Wednesday evening.

BUILDBASE FA VASE - THE FINAL FOUR

The semi-finalists of the Buildbase FA Vase are South Shields of the EBAC Northern League Division One, Cleethorpes Town of the Toolstation Northern Counties East League, Bromsgrove Sporting of the Midland League Division One and Coleshill Town of the Midland League Premier Division.

There were some amazing crowds in the Quarter-Final games played on the weekend of Saturday 18th and 19th February. 2,986 people crammed into The Victoria Ground to see Bromsgrove Sporting beat Buckland Athletic 2-0 and 3,161 saw South Shields comfortable 6-1 win against Newport Pagnell Town. This shows non-league football is really on it's way upwards in my opinion.

RYMAN DIVISION ONE (SOUTH) - RACE FOR THE TITLE

RYMAN DIVISION ONE (SOUTH)
CURRENT TABLE - TOP TWO
POS TEAM P GD PTS PP FORM
1 TOOTING & MITCHAM UNITED 35 +55 80 113 WWWWWWWW
2 DORKING WANDERERS 35 +45 77 110 DLWDWWWW

With a ten point gap between Dorking Wanderers and currently third placed Carshalton Athletic it's looking like a race between The Terrors and The Wanderers for the title in the Ryman Division One (South). Their nearest rivals are probably Greenwich Borough currently in Fourth place who could get to a possible points total of 102 if they win all their remaining games.

Tooting & Mitcham United are on an excellent run of form winning their last nine league games which has put them in a real chance of promotion back to the Premier Division they left through relegation in 2012.

It's bottom v top in the table this Saturday as Tooting travel to Godalming Town with Dorking Wanderers hosting 14th placed Ramsgate - The Rams are in good form of late winning four of their last six league games with only one defeat against Carshalton Athletic.

Tooting then host 20th placed Chipstead on Saturday 4th March with Dorking Wanderers at play-off chasing 6th placed Corinthian Casuals.

Further down the line on the final day of the season it could be a potentially massive game as Dorking Wanderers host Tooting and Mitcham United - Tooting won the game at Imperial Fields in August by a scoreline of 2-1.

BUILDBASE FA TROPHY QUARTER FINALS THIS WEEKEND

Dulwich Hamlet v Macclesfield Town
A massive crowd is expected at Champion Hill for this game as The Hamlet look to quality for the last four of the Trophy for the first time in their history. Advanced tickets have been sold out for the game with 1,500 left available on the gate on the day. The Silkmen are currently in ninth place of the Vanarama National league with a real chance of making the play-offs. The Hamlet warmed up for this game with a 7-1 London Senior Cup victory over Essex Senior League side Barkingside on Tuesday evening. Macclesfield Town won 0-1 at Eastleigh in a league game on the same night - The Spitfire's manager Martin Allen parted company with the club shortly after. Dipo Akinyemi, who recently rejoined on-loan from League Two side Stevenage FC, scored four of the seven goals for Hamlet. It'll be Gavin Rose's ninth game in the competition this season.

MACCLESFIELD TOWN BEST TROPHY PERFORMANCE

York City v Brackley Town
The Minstermen are struggling at the bottom of the Vanarama National division and it's look more and more likely they may be relegated twice in successive seasons. They have drawn four of their last six league games so are more difficult to beat than earlier in the season. Brackley Town are mid-table in the Vanarama North division - they have had some good wins in the Trophy with victories over AFC Fylde, Stockport Couty and Wealdstone standing out. They also had a great FA Cup run to the Second Round Proper beating football league side Gillingham in the First Round. It's easily their best performance in the Trophy having reached the First Round on four previous occasions. City have an excellent record in the competition winning it in 2012, being runner's up in 2009 and reaching the semi-final in 2008.

YORK CITY BEST TROPHY PERFORMANCE

2012/13 First Round v Guiseley L 1-3

Boreham Wood v Lincoln City
The Imps have hit the headlines with their amazing Emirates FA Cup run this season but they are also on the Road To Wembley in the Trophy. In just two weeks they make just a slightly longer (by 13 miles) to visit The Emirates to play Arsenal but this weekend they will be at Meadow Park to play Boreham Wood. There is chance Lincoln could play at Wembley on four different occasions in The FA Trophy Final, The FA Cup Semi-Final & Final and The Vanarama Play-Off Final.....I'm sure their loyal fans would be happy to take just the top-spot in the Vanarama National and with it promotion back to League Two.

BOREHAM WOOD BEST TROPHY PERFORMANCE
2005/06 Semi-Final v Woking L 0-3 on aggregate
LINCOLN CITY  BEST TROPHY PERFORMANCE

Tranmere Rovers v Barrow AFC
This should be a great game as third plays seventh in the Vanarama National Division. Rovers are just four points off first place in the table with Barrow having a real chance of the play-offs. The league can be forgotten about for the weekend as both clubs would love a chance of getting to the semi-final. The Cumbrians have a rich history in the competition reaching the semi-final in 1987/88, winning in 1989/90, the quarter-final in 1997/98, wining in 2009/10 and again reaching the quarter-final in 2012/13. This is only the second time Tranmere have played in the Trophy having been relegated from the Football League in 2015.

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION WEEKEND PREVIEW AND FIXTURES

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
WEEKEND FIXTURES
Burgess Hill Town v Metropolitan Police
Canvey Island v Folkestone Invicta
Dulwich Hamlet v Needham Market
Grays Athletic v Billericay Town
Harrow Borough v Leiston
Havant & Waterlooville v Hendon
Kingstonian v Tonbridge Angels
Lowestoft Town v Leatherhead
Merstham v Harlow Town
Staines Town v AFC Sudbury
Wingate & Finchley v Bognor Regis Town
Worthing v Enfield Town

There are some really intriguing fixtures in the Ryman Premier Division tomorrow. Table topper's Bognor Regis Town are on the road as they travel to fifth placed Wingate and Finchley who got back to winning ways at home to Folkestone Invicta on Tuesday evening in front of just 84 people - Keith Rowland's  side were 1-2 down with just five minutes to go but sealed a 3-2 victory with late goals from Reece Beckles-Richards and Rob Laney.

match action from Billericay Town's victory against Needham Market - photo's by @NickyHayesPhoto

Billericay Town's new look squad fired a real warning signal to the rest of the division on Wednesday evening with a 6-0 demolition of second placed Needham Market at The New Lodge. The impressive new look squad which has been assembled with numerous signings since Glenn Tamplin's take-over of the club before Christmas now seems to be clicking with The Blues winning their last five games in a row scoring eighteen goals in the process. They travel to local rival's Grays Athletic tomorrow with another new player in their squad - experienced goalkeeper Alan Julian Julian has signed from Vanarama National side Bromley. The bookmakers make the visitors 8/15 odd's on favourites with Grays at 4/1 in this game - they seem to never get it wrong do they but who would of given Grays any chance in their recent away game at Bognor Regis which they ended up winning 1-2. Craig Edwards side are seven points of the play-off zone - Could they sneak into the top five with a run towards the end of the season? I would say they can only afford to lose one more game in their final fourteen to be played if they have any chance.

Needham Market will look to get back to winning ways but have another tough away day at Dulwich Hamlet who have slipped down to tenth place having drawn three, won two and lost one of their last six league games - Will The Pink and Blues have one eye on their FA Trophy Quarter-Final against Vanarama National League side Macclesfield Town which is scheduled to take place on Saturday 28th February?

Third placed Havant and Waterlooville (still 7/5 title favourites with the bookies) entertain struggling Hendon with fourth placed Tonbridge Angels travelling to Kingstonian (12th) - Angels had a fantastic 3-0 win at home against Enfield Town in midweek which firmly cemented their play-off credentials.

The Towners (7th) have seen their play-off hopes fade, having lost four on their last six games, travel to Worthing (9th) in a game neither side can really afford to lose if they are to have any hope of finishing in the top five. The Rebels have recently lost the services of forward Omar Bugiel who has moved up the pyramid to Vanarama National side Forest Green Rovers. The 23 year old played his first game for Rovers last weekend coming on as substitute in what was a dream debut. He set up the first goal and scored the second in a 2-0 home victory over Boreham Wood.

SOUTHALL IN FA VASE QUARTER FINAL ACTION THIS SATURDAY

Not since their appearance in 1986 FA Vase final have Southall had a more important game than Saturday's Quarter Final against Cleethorpes Town. A huge crowd is expected at Reynolds Field. It's definitely a game not to be missed. If you are local why not pop along to give the Southall team some support on The Road to Wembley - you'll receive a very nice welcome.

It's a tough game in prospect with Cleethorpes Town playing one level above Southall at step five. They are members of the Toolstation Northern Counties East Premier Division where they are currently top losing just two league games of twenty eight and scoring 95 league goals in the process. To get to this stage they have beaten AFC Emley, Bootle, Billingham Town and Atherton Collieries.

Southall started back in the First Qualifying Round drawing 2-2 at Bedfordshire County League Cranfield United before a w/o was called in the replay as Cranfield couldn't raise a side. They then went on to beat step five sides London Tigers, Sporting Bengal United, Camberley Town, Knaphill and Bradford Town all away from home before winning 4-2 at home versus Exmouth Town in the last round.

The scheduled games for the forthcoming week in the SSMFL Division One could be pivotal as to who finishes top of the league and in the runner's up position to be promoted to the Premier Division for the 2017/18 season.

Harpenden Town travel to Biggleswade FC on Saturday before playing host to them on Tuesday evening at Rothamstead Park. Two wins for either side would firmly put them in the driving seat for the title.

The only team who have a really good chance of catching them are Baldock Town who have four games in hand over the current top two - they will be hoping for two draws in the upcoming games - they drew 3-3 with Kensington Borough last night and now have a run of five games at home hosting Hadley Wood & Wingate, Hillingdon Borough, Southall, Winslow United and Hatfield Town over the next few weeks.

SAYWELL, OTIM & JACKSON GOALS HELP HATFIELD TOWN TO VICTORY OVER RISBOROUGH RANGERS

Match played on Tuesday 7th February

Hatfield Town played host to Risborough Rangers on a cold Tuesday evening at The Gosling Stadium. Goals from Stefan Saywell, Paul Otim and debutant Nathan Jackson got The Blue Boys a well deserved 3-2 victory. Saywell's strike was fantastic as when he was initially through on goal he took the ball too far but was able to bring it back and skillfully turn the Risborough defender to create space to get a shot on goal. Otim's goal was made by Darren O'Brien's great run into the box and initial shot which you'll see from the highlights was equally impressive. Jackson's winner will not be great viewing for the away defence who should of done better from a corner kick.

The Blue Boys followed up this result with a home 0-2 defeat against Hillingdon Borough yesterday but will look to get back to winning ways with a Valentine's Night date with Buckingham Athletic at Stratford Fields on Tuesday evening.

FA SUNDAY CUP - UPDATE

The FA Sunday Cup is now down to the last four with Home & Bargain, New Salamis, Chessington United and The Hardwick FC all through to the semi-finals. North London based New Salamis (of The Kopa League) could be only the third team to retain the trophy in it's illustrious history - St Josephs (1980 and 1981) and Fantail (1995 and 1996) are the only teams to win it twice in a row.

HOME & BARGAIN play in the Liverpool Business Houses Premier League and are currently in fourth place of nine teams.

Chessington United celebrate their win on kicks from the penalty mark over Kopa League Omonia earlier today.

CHESSINGTON UNITED are members of the Leatherhead and District Sunday League where they are currently top of the Premier Division and on course to win the title for the third season in a row - they won Division One in 2013/14

THE HARDWICK play in the Stockton Sunday League and are currently in second place but if they win their games in hand they will overtake Portrack FC who are currently table toppers.

NEW SALAMIS are the current holders of the FA Sunday Cup having beaten Barnes AFC on penalty kicks in the final last season at Selhurst Park.

The draw will be made by The Football Association tomorrow.

COULD LEYTON ORIENT BE RELEGATED FROM THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE?

The O's have been members of the football league since 1905 when they joined the then second tier of the game as Clapton Orient. In 2014 they were so close to promotion to The Championship when they lost on kicks from the penalty mark in the League One play-off final to Rotherham United. Since Barry Hearn sold the club to Italian business man Francesco Becchetti in that same year the East London club have dramatically spiralled downwards being relegated to League Two and also turned over a huge number of managers with Russell Slade, Kevin Nugent, Fabio Liverani, Ian Hendon, Andy Hessenthaler, Alberto Cavasin, Andy Edwards and now Daniel Webb in charge.

To say their loyal fans are very unhappy at the current running of the club is a slight understatement.

The O's are currently second bottom of League Two with only Newport County below them. They have lost their last five league games and only have two wins in their last ten games played.

Every game is crucial for any team at the bottom of the table as we come to the business end of the season - The O's have eighteen matches left so there are still plenty of chances to move away from the drop zone.

MASSIVE GAME AGAINST MORECAMBE TOMORROW EVENING

Tomorrow they face Morecambe (currently 17th and and seven points above them) at home, then they make two trips to the South-West to Yeovil Town (15th) on Saturday and then title challenger's Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday 14th February - what a way to spend Valentine's Evening?

The bookmakers currently make them 11/8 to be relegated or 4/7 to stay up.

If you fancy a bet on tomorrow's game they are 7/5 to win with The Shrimps at 19/10 and the draw at 12/5.

FC BUSH & ENFIELD ALBION COMPETE IN CUP FINAL

The final of the Edmonton and District Sunday League Division Three final will take place just under a month when FC Bush face Enfield Albion at The Henry Barrass Stadium. FC Bush are top of the table at present and are having a great season after forming over the summer of last season - Albion are in second place of the table so it's all set for a great game of football. Why not pop over to Jubilee Park in N9 to show the teams some support - they would welcome everyone who came.

MACRON WELWYN HATFIELD SUNDAY LEAGUE - UPDATE

KIT CLASH? - THE GROVE v HATFIELD SENIORS
played today at King George's Playing Fields

MATCH ACTION FROM SHAMROCK ROVERS v BRADMORE ROVERS played today at King George's Playing Field

Three games were played at King George's Playing Fields in The Premier Division Cup on Sunday. Shamrock Rovers (2nd) played Bradmore Rovers (3rd), Shamrock Rovers Res (7th) played Sun Inn Lemsford (8th) and league leader's The Grove played Hatfield Seniors (10th). The scheduled game between The Great Northern and Hatfield Cricket Club was cancelled as HCC couldn't raise a side.

The league needs all the support it can get at present with many teams folding in the local area over the past few years so why not get involved and come along and give some of the teams a cheer. In the race for the title it looks like one of The Grove, Shamrock Rovers, Bradmore Rovers, The Rosey or The Great Northern will finish top when it matters with only 5 points currently seperating them.
