A NAME FROM NON-LEAGUE'S PAST - MINEHEAD AFC

The PDC Ladbrokes UK Open Darts has made headlines over the weekend with Dimitri Van Den Bergh winning his second Major trophy. The tournament was held in the Somerset seaside Town of Minehead which got me thinking how are Minehead AFC getting on at present?

The club were established in 1889 and have made headlines in the FA Cup making the First Round proper in 70/71, 79/80, 80/81 and the 81/82 along with the Second Round proper in 76/77 where they beat Swansea City 0-1 in the First Round and 77/78 when they lost to Exeter City at their Irnham Road ground in front of a crowd of 3,050 people.

The 76/77 season was their best ever as they finished as runner's up in the Southern League to Wimbledon who were promoted to the football league. This was under the player/management of club legend Bob Boyd who made 453 appearances scoring 70 goals for the club - He was a central defender! Boyd sadly passed away in June 2018 at the age of 70 but is still fondly remembered by many people in the Town.

They were relegated back to the Western League in 1983 and by 2010 after finishing bottom of Division One they were relegated to the Somerset County League Premier Division. In 2015 they suffered another relegation and now play in the Somerset County League Division One where last season they finished in 9th position.

They are currently in 11th place with Ashton & Blackwell United above them and Westfield below them.

The town had a population of around 12,000 and they still play at Irnham Road so with a little bit of investment I think the Town could easily support at Step Five team and then who knows? This is, of course, easier said then done!

Manager Mark Harris recently left the club due to a change in personal circumstances and has been replaced first team coach Craig Carr on an interim basis.

They lost 1-3 at home to Stockwood Green who are currently in 13th place and have a very tough game this forthcoming weekend as they travel to league leader's Staplegrove who won 0-6 at Irnham Road in January.

They issued the following statement via their Facebook page on Friday 9th February

"Following a meeting this evening where it was announced that a number of the club committee members will be stepping down at the end of the season, Minehead AFC now starts a recruitment process for several roles and positions.

Minehead AFC will be looking for people to fill the following roles:
Chair
Secretary
Treasurer
Director of Football
Director of Commercial
First Team Manager"

If you are live near to Minehead please give them some support or if your interested in sponsorship or volunteering please contact them.

It would be great to see a historic name for non-league's past make a comeback and move up the pyramid. They are a real community club with many youth sides for both girls and boys.
