BRING THE DUCKS HOME? - WHAT'S GOING ON WITH FOOTBALL IN AYLESBURY?

This July marks sixteen years since Aylesbury United lost their Buckingham Road ground that they had called home. The Ducks have now played outside of their home town for nearly two decades and there are currently no signs of them returning.

Plans were submitted to develop the Buckingham Road site, which is still standing but derelict and boarded up, into housing earlier this year with objections raised by local residents and the environmental agency delaying things.

There were hopes of buying the ground back in 2019 but the club's bid wasn't accepted and it was unfortunately sold to developers.

Since 2006 they have ground shared at Chesham United, Leighton Town, Thame United and have now been back at Chesham United since 2017.

Football in the Buckinghamshire town has changed over the last two decades with the introductions of Aylesbury FC (now Aylesbury Vale Dynamos) in 2009 and the advent of the 'EL QUACKICO' derby.

The Dynamos were formed in the 1930s in the Kings Cross area of London as a work's team called Negretti & Zambra. The company moved to the Town in 1949 changing it's name to Stocklake when N&Z sold the social club to the local council. In 2000 Belgrave FC and Stocklake amalgamated and the club was renamed Haywood United. In 2005 they were renamed Aylesbury Vale with the Vale part dropped in 2009. In 2019 the club merged with Bedgrove Dynamos who were ran many successful youth teams to become Aylesbury Vale Dynamos.

In 2010 FC replaced United in the Southern League with The Ducks relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League but they played at the same Step Four level from 2013 to 2019 following United's return and then Vale's demotion.

There has been some National Cup success for the town in 2019 when Aylesbury Flooring won the FA Sunday Cup with a win over Birstall Stamford at Peterborough United's London Road ground. The squad included numerous players who have played for both FC and United over the years.

So for the 2022/23 season Aylesbury United will play in the Southern League Division One (Central) with Aylesbury Vale Dynamos playing one step below them in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division.

Ben Williams is the man in charge of The Ducks having been permanently appointed in January 2018 after a spell as Assistant Manager and Caretaker Manager. During his playing career he played for Haywood United.

Dynamos appointed joint manager's Michael East and Liam Dwyer in June. East makes the step up from managing the club's reserve side in the Suburban League last season and has also been Assistant Manager at Tring Athletic. Dwyer was coach at Kings Langley in the Southern League Premier Central last season.

It's far from perfect playing at Chesham United but Aylesbury United will play on with their loyal group of fans still hopeful of a return to their home town sooner rather than later.
