The historic name of DARWEN FC will return to football for the 2022/23 season in North West Counties League Division One (North) as AFC Darwen (who I wrote about here in April 2020) have announced a change of name.
The original Darwen FC were formed way back in 1870 reaching the FA Cup Semi-Final in 1881 and were members of the football league from 1891 to 1899. In 2009 they were wound up in the High Court after a number of years of financial problems. AFC Darwen were formed for the start of the 09/10 season and play at The Anchor Ground.
