It's been on the cards for the many months but Saturday's 0-2 home defeat to Yeovil Town confirmed Dover Athletic's relegation from non-league's top division after a eight season stay since the 2014/15 season. The Kent club reached the play-offs in the 15/16 campaign when they finished in 5th placed just above Tranmere Rovers. They narrowly lost 2-1 to Forest Green Rovers in the play-off semi-final.
The club started the season on -12 points following which was a penalty given for failing to complete fixtures in the 20/21 season.
The huge gap between step two and step one of the non-league ladder is indicated by the next two teams who occupy the relegation places - Weymouth and Kings Lynn Town were both promoted for the 20/21 season - The Linnets escaped the drop last season despite finishing in the bottom four as their was no relegation due to the curtailment of leagues below step two. The Terras finished in 18th place just eight points from the 'drop zone'.
With a nine point gap to Aldershot Town in 20th place and eleven games left to play for both Kings Lynn Town and Weymouth it's looking like a tough ask but it's not impossible. The Linnets recorded a 0-3 victory at Aldershot Town at the weekend which was their first win after a run of eight games without a victory.
