Aveley currently lead the way in the Pitching In Isthmian League North Division closely followed by Canvey Island and Stowmarket Town. Aveley and Canvey Island both had good victories yesterday but the Suffolk side were held 0-0 at home to a resurgent Hullbridge Sports - see more details below about them!
Grays Athletic, Dereham Town and Brentwood Town still have a chance but it would take a drop off in form from all of the current top three for them to finish top which would be a surprise if it did. Brentwood Town are probably best placed with their games in hand although their 1-1 draw at Maldon & Tiptree yesterday didn't help their cause.
TEAM | GAMES LEFT | POSSIBLE POINTS |
---|---|---|
AVELEY | 12 | 91 |
CANVEY ISLAND | 12 | 90 |
STOWMARKET TOWN | 13 | 92 |
GRAYS ATHLETIC | 13 | 84 |
DEREHAM TOWN | 12 | 81 |
BRENTWOOD TOWN | 15 | 87 |
At the bottom of the table it's been a fantastic week for Hullbridge Sports who looked set for relegation to the Essex Senior League only a few weeks ago. The Essex club saw Manager Darren Manning and his assistant James Wakeling leave in September to be replaced by Steve Sullivan who then stepped down himself in mid November. Sullivan's assistant Steve Southgate then took over as Manager.
Sports have won two, drawn two and only lost two of their last 6 games played. They have picked up seven points in the last week with home wins against Dereham Town and Coggeshall Town along with yesterday's draw at Stowmarket Town.
Their next two games are huge with a home fixture against Great Wakering Rovers next weekend followed by the small matter of a trip to Romford on Saturday 19th February. The Boro are 10 points off of safety and it's really looking like a return to the ESL for them for the 22/23 campaign - they last played at Step Five in the 08/09 season.
They are without a win in eighteen league games but will be encouraged by their 1-1 draw against play-off chasing Hashtag United yesterday which ended a run of three defeats by a aggregate score of 0-16. It also ended a run of losing seven league home games with only one goal scored!
The loyal Romford fans will be happy to see the familiar face of Paul 'Magic' Martin is back in the Manager's seat recently - they had five debutants in their starting XI yesterday in Joseph Alatise, Madju Kinona, Chancery Dash, Afolabi Soyemi-Olalade and Callum Ferris.
Their goal yesterday was scored by former Fisher FC and Tower Hamlet's striker Tami Ogunnowo which was his first for the club having only made his debut in early January against Canvey Island.
Before their big game with Hullbridge Sports they travel to Stowmarket Town next Saturday who were the last team they beat in the league way back in October.
Barking, Romford's landlords, are also in danger of relegation along with Witham Town before their is a four point gap to Basildon United. Barking have recently appointed Charlie MacDonald as manager and drew 0-0 at Witham Town yesterday. Their forthcoming Friday night game against Basildon United is huge for them.
