SPOTLIGHT ON SOME OF THE CLUBS REMAINING
FALMOUTH TOWN AFC
The Ambers are having an amazing season so far winning all twelve of their league games and leading the division from Camleford AFC and Liskeard Athletic (also qualified for this stage) in second and third places. Fourth placed Wendron United have also qualified for the second round.
The club have been attracting some good crowds to their games at Bickland Park with 570 at their first round win versus Hellenic Premier Division side Bradford Town.
Andrew Westgarth recently celebrated 250 games in charge with a 1-5 away win over Penzance AFC. The Cornish club's fortunes both on and off the pitch have been transformed in recent years and look set for promotion to the Western League and beyond.
Could they go beyond their best ever run in the Vase in 1986/87 when they beat Westbury United, Bristol Manor Farm, Exmouth Town, Wimborne Town, Clevedon Town and Witham Town before travelling to St Helens Town in the Quarter-Final and drawing 1-1 - they narrowly lost the replay 0-1 at home with St Helens Town going on to win the competition.
OLDLAND ABBOTONIANS
The club were formed in 1998 when Oldland FC and Longwell Green Abbotonians merged. They have been members of the Western League Division One since promotion from the Somerset County League in 2007. This season is their best run in the Vase as they have never got past the Second Qualifying Round stage since entering in 2012.
They went through on penalty kicks (W 5-4) after a 2-2 draw at home to Western Premier Division side Helston Athletic.
MILTON UNITED
Based in the Oxfordshire village of Milton and currently play in the Hellenic League Division One. There best run in the Vase has been reaching the second round stage on three seperate occasions in 93/94, 94/95 and 04/05.
A quirk maybe they could draw Wessex League Division One side NEW MILTON TOWN in the next round - so it'll be similar to last season when Hadley played Hadleigh United. They represent the Hampshire town of New Milton which is around 80 miles from their home ground.
ATHERSTONE TOWN
A huge club with lots of history currently playing at Step Six of the non-league ladder in the Midland League Division One. The original Atherstone Town club formed in 1887 and famously reached the final of the FA Amateur Cup in 1908 where they were defeated by Clapton. They reached the semi-final stage a year later. In their last season in existence they were members of the Southern League Premier Division in 78/79 alongside clubs such as Maidstone United, Yeovil Town, Barnet and Cheltenham all of whom went on to join the football league.
They were were immediately reformed as Atherstone United and moved up to the Southern League Premier Division by 1989 - they finished fourth in 93/94 ahead of Crawley Town in fifth place. They were relegated to the Southern League Western Division in 2000 and folded midway though the 03/04 campaign.
A new Atherstone Town club were formed in 2004 and have been members of the Midland League Division One since 2014.
The Adders had a tremendous run to the quarter-final stage in 2019/20 competition where they lost to Consett AFC 1-3 at home in front of a crowd of 950 people.
They are currently top of the Midland League Division One.
CARLISLE CITY
The Sky Blues were formed in 1975 and took over the lease of the Gilford Park the former home of Cletic Nation who had folded due to financial issues in 2015. They currently play in the EBAC Northern League Division Two - Their best FA Vase run came back in 1976/77 when they reached the Third Round losing to Leeds & Carnegie Polytechnic. They last reached the second round stage when The Police were Walking on the Moon in 1979/90 when Smith's Dock beat them 0-2.
It would be great to see them get through to the later stages of the competition and draw either Mousehole, Falmouth Town or Wendron United which would be just below a 1,000 round trip between the two stadiums.
AFC LIVERPOOL The club's full name is AFFORDABLE FOOTBALL CLUB LIVERPOOL and they were formed by a group of Liverpool fans back in 2008 who had been priced out of Premier League football as a not-for-profit organisation - they currently ground-share with Marine at Rossett Park. They got to the Third Round of the VASE in 2010/11 when they were well beaten by Whitley Bay. In league games this season they have averaged a crowd of 127.
Step Six Holker Old Boys caused a shock in the First Round by beating step five Skemersdale United 3-2. The Barrow based side's best run in the Vase prior to this season was to get to the third round in 1996/97 when they lost to Dunston Federation Brewery (now Dunston UTS).
MOUSEHOLE AFC
Representing the small Cornish fishing port/village just outside of Penzance there were reports of a possible merger with Penzance AFC a few years ago as their Trungle Park home was not sufficient for playing at a higher level of non-league football. The Seagulls have moved up to the Western League Premier Division thanks to a sponsorship agreement with Endorsed Group who are local recruitment and software company. The 21/22 season is only the second time they have entered the Vase.
THE DRAW FOR THE SECOND ROUND TAKES PLACE TOMORROW.
