Saturday 12th December 1981 saw Altrincham of the Alliance Premier League visit Bootham Crescent to play York City who were struggling towards the bottom end of Division Four and had just parted company with their manager Barry Lyons.
The Minstermen had won at Stafford Rangers in the First Round watched by 2,289 people. Altrincham, with a rich history in the FA Cup reaching the third round in 1966, 1975, 1979, 1980 and 1981, had won at home to Sheffield United (also then in the Fourth Division) 0-3 in a first round reply after a 0-0 draw at Brammal Lane.
This game ended 0-0 with The Robins winning 4-3 in the replay - they lost 6-1 at then Division Three side Burnley in the Third Round.
York City featured Malcolm Crosby who went on to manage Sunderland to the 1992 FA Cup Final which they lost 2-0 to Liverpool. Sunderland were a Division Two side and finished in 18th position in the table that season.
