The Russian Premier Liga was established at the end of 2001 and was re-branded with its current name in 2018. The division is comprised of sixteen teams and has three Champions League qualifying spots given to the top three teams at the end of the season with fourth and fifth placed teams gaining entry into the Europa League. The last two teams are relegated to the Russian National Football League (Second Tier) at the end of the season with the thirteenth/fourteenth teams put into a play off with the third/fourth placed teams in the RNFL for potential promotion or relegation.
