LATE GOAL WINS THE JOHN MILTON PLATE FOR BARTON ROVERS
Each time Barton Rovers and Arlesey Town play each they compete for "The John Milton Plate" which is named in honour and memory of John Milton who was chairman of both clubs during his life.
Last year both clubs were members of the Evo Stik Southern League East Division but it was a miserable campaign for Arlesey who finished bottom and were relegated to return to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division (Step 5) for the first time since the year 2000 so this pre-season friendly played last night may well be the only time the two Bedfordshire local rival's play each other.
This was a fantastically entertaining match with all the players showing full commitment which is sometimes missing from pre-season games. There were lots of chances created by both sides with both management teams taking lots of positives from the game. There was the usual raft of substitutions in the second half but the game continued to be decent - Barton had a penalty well saved late on in the game which was a talking point in itself. They had an appeal for a spot kick turned down and then a few seconds later the referee gave one for a challenge in the box. Have a look at the replays and see what you make of them? I think the incident which wasn't given was more of a penalty than the one that was given - VAR at the World Cup may of given it!
Barton kept the pressure on and won the game with a late goal to win The John Milton Plate for now.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY ROUND-UP
There were many clubs in pre-season action this afternoon as fans got their first look at new players and the infamous 'trialist' players making starts for many managers.
Vanarama National side Boreham Wood entertained a very strong Arsenal side who played their first game under new boss Unai Emery. It was a great start for the former PSG boss as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted a first half hat-trick on 7,9 and 17 mins followed by goals from Reiss Nelson, Alexandre Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to make the final score 0-8. Aubameyang scored 10 times in 14 games for The Gunners following his move in January 2018 so may be a decent bet for the Premier League golden-boot at 6/1 - Only Harry Kane (2/1) and Mo Salah (9/2) are above him at the moment. odds courtesy of betstars.co.uk. Boreham Wood won't be too dismayed as over 3,500 watched the game so it was a good day all round for both clubs.

THE LINE-UPS FOR NORTHWOOD v CHELSEA XI TODAY WHICH NO DOUBT CONTAINED SOME STARTS OF THE FUTURE. SIX YEARS AGO THE WOODS PLAYED A CHELSEA u21 TEAM WHICH CONTAINED RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK
Bostik South Central Division side Northwood played their first home game under new manager Dean Barker against a Chelsea development side. The Woods ran out 1-0 winners thanks to James Ewington's early goal. It's early days of course but I expect The Woods to have a great 2018/19 season.
Essex Olympian side Epping Town FC entertained Essex Senior League side Walthamstow FC who ran out 2-4 winners thanks to goals from James Peagram, Christian Owusu, Ramsey and R Pope.
Bostik Premier Division Enfield Town won 0-3 at Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division side Wembley thanks to goals from Matt Johnson and two from trialist players.

Bostik South-Central Division side Waltham Abbey won 0-4 at Essex Senior League side Enfield 1893 FC.
Eastern Counties League First Division South team Hashtag United continued the build up to their first proper non-league season with a game at Bostik North Division Romford. They won 2-0 thanks to goals from Daniel Adjei and Neil Richmond. Their next game comes next Saturday when they travel to Bournemouth FC.
THE BRIMSDOWN TEAM TODAY BEFORE KICK OFF AT MABLEY GREEN
Over at Mabley Green in Hackney Spartan South Midlands Division One side Brimsdown (who will be ground sharing with Ware for the 2018/19 season) drew 0-0 with Essex Senior League side Barkingside.
JAMES BEARDWELL WAS HAPPY TODAY AT WITHAM'S 1-5 VICTORY AT SAWBRIDGEWORTH
Finally, Witham Town (of the Bostik North) travelled to Essex Senior League side Sawbridgeworth Town and ran out 1-5 winners which made the loyal Witham Town super-fan James Beardwell very happy. Witham are under the new management of Mark Ashford this season.

There are some great games in the Premier Division on the opening weekend of the season. Corinthian-Casuals last played in the Isthmian top division back in 1973/74 so it will be a huge celebration when they travel to face Margate who finished seventh last season. Whitehawk, relegated from the Vanarama South, entertain Harlow Town whose fans will enjoy a lovely day at the seaside in Brighton as will Enfield Town fans in Folkestone Invicta and Wingate & Finchley fans in Worthing - I'm sure a few beers might be sunk even if the sun's not shining. For Enfield Town's boss Andy Leese who has made a number of good signings it'll be a good test for his side against a Folkestone side who impressed so many fans last season in getting to the play-off semi-finals.

NO GOALS BETWEEN COLNEY HEATH AND CODICOTE
It was Spartan South Midlands League Division One v Premier Division tonight as Codicote played Colney Heath in a pre-season friendly at Kimpton Recreation Ground.
Colney Heath had drawn 1-1 on Saturday against London Lions in a game which saw eleven debuts for The Magpies so this was their second pre-season game. Manager Ryan Thompson told his team tonight that he was looking for player's fitness and was looking at them as people and the decisions they make during the game and the players learning to organise and communication with each other.
Thompson has been in charge of Colney Heath since November 2016 - his team finished 18th in that season and then improved to 11th place last season.
Codicote are under the new management of Elliot Smith who will be assisted by James Smithson and Kevin Cahill. Smith has played for Ampthill Town, Harpenden Town and London Colney during his career. It was their first pre-season friendly for the 2018/19 season. There team was apparently made up of lots of new players and trialists.
The final score was 0-0 with Codicote hitting the angle of post and bar in the first half. Below are some match pictures -

LEAGUE IN FOCUS - THE WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE (& THE WELSH FOOTBALL PYRAMID)
The league was officially formed in late 1991 starting for the 1992–93 season. At the time the Football Association of Wales (FAW), despite being a FIFA and UEFA member had not previously organised a National League, only the Welsh Cup. The League was known as The League of Wales until 2002 when it was changed to the Welsh Premiership and then the Welsh Premier League in 2004.
Traditionally, prior to 1991, the strongest teams in the Wales had played in the English Football League system including Aberdare Athletic, Cardiff City, Merthyr Town, Newport County, Swansea City and Wrexham with Bangor City being founder members of the Alliance Premier League in 1979. The Citizens also famously reached the final of the FA Trophy in 1984.
The league's formation saw a much publicised dispute between FAW and eight clubs who wanted to remain part of the English football pyramid. It was decided at the time that football league club's Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wrexham were able to continue to play in the English system but Bangor City, Barry Town, Caernarfon Town, Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport, Newtown and Rhyl had to join the league - something which the club's disagreed with.
Prior to inaugural season Bangor City, Newtown and Rhyl all agreed to play in the League of Wales. Rhyl's application to join the league was late so they were placed in the second level of the newly organised Welsh pyramid system.
The five remaining clubs had to play their home matches in England with Barry Town joining the League of Wales after just one season in exile at Worcester City.
In 1995 a court ruling allowed the remaining four clubs to return home whilst still remaining within the English system. Caernarfon Town joined the league in the end with Newport County, Colwyn Bay and Merthyr Tydfil remaining in the English league system.
TEAMS IN THE FIRST 1992/93 SEASON & WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Cwmbran Town - Champions in the first season and also runner's up in 1997, 2000 and 2003 playing in Europe in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003. The club struggled from 2005/06 finishing in the relegation zone but avoiding the drop as no teams in the feeder leagues were eligible for promotion. In 2006/07 there were reported financial problems and they finished in 17th place and were relegated. Since 2011 they have played in the Gwent County League Division One.
Inter Cardiff - Merged with Cardiff Metropolitan University (UWIC) to form 'UWIC Inter Cardiff' in 2000 with the club now playing under the name of Cardiff Metropolitan University FC. The original Inter Cardiff (changed to 'Inter Cable Tel' from 1996) finished runner's up in the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons following it up with 10th, 8th, 2nd, 4th and 2nd finishes before the merger when the new club finished in 16th and 18th places when they were relegated in 2000/01. Cardiff Metropolitan University won the Welsh Football League Division One and were promoted to the Welsh Premier League where they have finished in 6th placed twice.
Aberystwyth Town - Still members of the top division in Wales. Their third placed finish in the 92/93 season is still their best.
Ebbw Vale - Finished 4th, 9th, 13th, 11th, 3rd and 3rd before they were expelled from the league before the 1998/99 for financial difficulties and the club unfortunately were dissolved.
Bangor City - Champions in 1994, 1995 and 2011. They were runner's up last season but controversially ended a 20 + year association with the league when they were relegated after the their stadium failed to receive a tier one domestic licence and UEFA licence for forthcoming season. The club sought legal advice but were unable to appeal the decision on financial grounds. They will play the 2018/19 season in the Cymru Alliance and will be considered by many as strong favourites for the title. It'll be interesting to see their results in their opening games against Buckley Town and Guilsfield.
Holywell Town - Relegated in 1997. Now members of the Cymru Alliance.
Conwy United - Relegated in 2000. Now playing as 'Conway Borough' and were Welsh Alliance Division One champions last season.
Connah's Quay Nomads - Still members of the Welsh Premier League and barring a two season stay in the Cymru Alliance between 2010 to 2012. Finished 2nd and 3rd in the last two seasons.
Porthmadog - Relegated in 1998 but gained promotion back in 2003 followed by relegation in 2010. Currently members in of Cymru Alliance.
Haverfordwest County - Only stayed for two season's from 1992 to 1994 following problems with the grading of their Bridge Meadow ground. They moved back to the Welsh top division in 1997 and stayed until 2011. They went up again for the 2015/16 season but came back down after a one season stay. The most successful club in the league are ironically based at ground outside of Wales in Shropshire!
Now known at 'The New Saints' they were founded in 1959 as 'Llansantffraid FC' and from 1997 to 2006 they were famously known as 'Total Network Solutions FC' after a sponsorship deal. In 2003 they merged (absorbed) with Oswestry Town and then three years later it adopted its current name of 'The New Saints of Oswestry Town & Llansantffraid Football Club'
Oswestry Town had been accepted in the League of Wales from 2000 to 2003 with Llanssantffraid playing in the league since 1993/94. TNS play at Park Hall in Oswestry after moving there in 2007 from the Recreation Ground in Llansantffraid
The club have won the title in 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010 and since 2012 they have dominated Welsh football winning the league for six years in a row along with the Welsh Cup in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and the Welsh Premier League Cup four years in a row since 2014 - they have won in a total of nine times!
The Shropshire town is quite a hot-bed of football as a new club 'FC Oswestry Town' were formed in 2013 as a successor to Oswestry Lions and they ground share with TNS. They play in the North West Counties League Division One (South) alongside 'St Martins FC' who play at 'The Venue' ground in the town.

Haverfordwest County - Only stayed for two season's from 1992 to 1994 following problems with the grading of their Bridge Meadow ground. They moved back to the Welsh top division in 1997 and stayed until 2011. They went up again for the 2015/16 season but came back down after a one season stay. Now members of the Welsh Football League Division One. In 2004 they played in the UEFA Cup Qualifying Round losing over 2 legs to Icelandic side
Fimleikafelag Hafnarfjardar.
