Wroxham appear to be running away with the Eastern Counties League being ten points above their nearest challengers Brantham Athletic and Ely City. However, Should Ely win their two games in hand they would only be four points off the top with The Yachtsmen due to visit Ely's Unwin Ground on Saturday 4th February.

Brantham Athletic have within their ranks the current top scorer in the league in Ollie Mann on 19 goals in 22 games. Mann was scouted by several league clubs and the club rejected offers in excess of £10,000 from clubs higher up the non-league pyramid at the end of last season. Brantham moved back up to the ECL in 2008 after being relegated to the Suffolk and Ipswich League in 1995. Their best finish in the ECL came in the 1982/83 season when they finished 4th.

Wroxham dominated the league in the 1990's winning the title on no less than six occasions and once again in 2007. Their three league defeats so far came against Brantham Athletic, Gorleston and most recently on the 2nd January at Walsham-Le-Willows.

Ely City won their first game of the season but followed this up with two defeats at Dereham Town and Haverhill Rovers. Norwich United inflicted their third defeat by a score of 2-0 on Saturday 3rd December. They face Walsham-Le-Willows this Saturday who caused one of the surprise results of the season when beating Wroxham detailed above.

So, as it stands, it looks to be a straight race between Ely City and Wroxham but a slip up could allow Brantham Athletic or even fourth placed Wisbech Town in. Wisbech were beaten by Ely on Boxing Day and then went down to Wroxham on Saturday 31st December. Although the seven games that Wisbech have lost so far may discount them from the title race as only Lowestoft Town in 2005/06 lost more than 7 games and won the league. They lost eight out of their 42 games.

It remains to be announced what teams will apply for promotion to step 4 subject to ground grading etc.
