1) Most football fans know that Alf Common was the first £1,000 player when transferring from Sunderland to Middlesbrough in February 1905 but did you know Common was the subject of the first £500 fee when moving to Roker Park from Sheffield United.
2) Common went back to haunt one of his old clubs for Middlesbrough in one of his first games for his new club scoring the only goal of the game at Brammal Lane against Sheffield United to give The Smoggies their first away win for two years.
3) He played 168 times for Middlesbrough hitting the back of the net 58 times transferring South to play for Woolwich Arsenal for 2 years before moving back North to play for Preston North End. Common won only 3 England caps during his career scoring twice.
