With a number of games called off recently for Enfield Town the footballing question that has been asked many times down the years comes to mind - Are points in the bag better than games in hand? The answer will be confirmed over the coming weeks with a tough schedule for each club battling to survive in the Enterprise National South Division. Bath City have only played twenty seven games in comparison to Chippenham Town and Eastbourne Borough's thirty two.

Enfield Town made a great escape last year - having been bottom of the table and nine points adrift of safety after the games played on New Years Day.

After twenty-nine games last season they were in 21st with St Albans City, Aveley and Weymouth below them, they were seven points adrift and had the same amount of points. This season they are just six points adrift so you just never know?

ENFIELD TOWN COMPARISON

25/26 24/24  29  16  32  51  -19  23

Eastbourne Borough were expected to follow on from last season's title challenge and third placed finish but it's not gone to plan for the south-coast team.

Following the departure of Manager Adam Murray in the summer Matt Gray was brought in but it didn't work out for the former Sutton United boss who departed in October to be replaced by former Aldershot Town boss Tommy Widdrington who joined for his second spell at The Sports.

For a club who have a full time budget who were just two games away from Step One of the non-league ladder in 2025 - they could be playing at Step Three from the 26/27 campaign.

Chippenham Town looked set on relegation back to step three for the first time since the 16/17 season after just two wins in their first twenty-two games but four wins from their last ten played have given them a real chance of survival. Their last two games have been highly impressive 1-0 home wins over Torquay United and Maidstone United

Both were late goals with Tomas Mehew scoring on 83 minutes against The Gulls and former Swindon Town striker Harry Parson netting a dramatic 96th minute winner against The Stones yesterday. These two wins have given all the supporters at Hardenhuish Park hope!

Farnborough lost an eventful game at Dorking Wanderers yesterday having been 0-2 and 2-3 up they eventually lost 5-3. Since the turn of the year they only have one win from five games played against fellow struggler's Eastbourne Borough. They have three home games in a row, weather permitting, against Dagenham & Redbridge, Enfield Town and Chippenham Town.

It's all to play for over the next few months where just two wins in a row could change the course of the season for any club.

One thing this past year has shown for sure is that relegation to step three doesn't necessarily mean a successful season. The four clubs relegated from the National South and National North last season were

Aveley - currently 2nd in Isthmian Premier - 14 points off of table topper's Folkestone Invicta.
Weymouth - currently 17th Southern Premier South just one point from drop zone.
St Albans City - currently 11th Isthmian Premier.
Welling United - currently 22nd (bottom) of the Isthmian Premier and looking at a second successive relegation.

Farsley Celtic - were placed in Northern Counties East League but due to financial difficulties withdrew and were liquidated in December. A phoenix club FC Farlsey has been formed.
Needham Market - currently 6th in Southern Premier Central
Rushall Olympic - currently 15th in Northern Premier League Premier
Warrington Town - currently 9th in Northern Premier League Premier
