THE BOTTOM OF THE VANARAMA SOUTH DIVISION

HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE
FORM COMPARISION AFTER ELEVEN GAMES
SEASON P W D L GF GA GD PTS EP
21/22 11 6 1 4 19 13 +6 19 8/24
22/23 11 9 2 0 28 13 +15 29 10/24
23/24 11 1 2 8 13 23 -10 5 ??

It's been a difficult start to the season for Havant & Waterlooville who have won just one of their eleven league games played which did come in a memorable 4-3 victory over Yeovil Town in front of a crowd of 1,744. They have also been knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup by Southern League Premier Division South side Bracknell Town in the Third Qualifying Round.

Their has been three managers in charge since the beginning of last season - Paul Doswell had been appointed in April 2019 but was replaced with Jamie Collins in March 2023 which was his first job in football management - He parted company with The Hawks in September with former Gloucester City, Dartford and Farnborough boss Steve King taking over.

As in most cases with the change in management comes player movement. Comparing the staring XI's of the first game of the 22/23 season  to The Hawks last game against Hampton & Richmond Borough only Ross Worner, Jake McCarthy and James Roberts remain at the club.  Mo Faal came off the sub's bench in this game and is still with the club starting the game against Hampton. Oscar Gobern was on the bench and is still listed as being with the club but hasn't played this season.

Since King has taken over he has brought in four players that he knows well that have played for him at former clubs. Goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook from Bromley, Michael Kedman from Danish side Aalborg. Tom Bonner from Dartford and Jacob Barkley-Agyepong from Gloucester City.

King has had success with all the clubs he had managed. He started his career with Lewes in 2001 taking them from the Isthmian Division One South to non-league's top division in just five years. He then joined then Conference side Northwich Victoria for a very short spell between November 2008 to February 2009 before spending the 09/10 and 10/11 seasons with Farnborough winning the Southern Premier Division title and then finished 2nd in the Conference South where they lost in the play-off final to Ebbsfleet United.

After another short spell with Lewes from July 2011 to January 2012 before joining Macclesfield Town in May 2012 who had just been relegated from the football league. He left in April 2013 with The Silkmen in 8th place of the Conference Premier - They had a memorable FA Cup run defeating Marine, Swindon Town, Barrow and Cardiff City before losing at Wigan Athletic.

Whitehawk was his next stop joining them in February 2014 where he kept the Brighton based side up with a dramatic 3-3 draw at home to Sutton United on the final day of the season. Then in 14/15 The Hawks had their best ever season in their history finishing in 4th place and losing on penalty kicks in the play-off final at Boreham Wood. In the 15/16 season The Hawks famously beat Lincoln City in the First Round of the FA Cup before losing to Dagenham & Redbridge in a Second Round Replay. After a poor run of form King left the club in February 2016.

He re-joined The Hawks in September 2017 but was unable to prevent their relegation from the Vanarama South Division departing at the end of the 17/18 season.

He spent the 18/19 as Manager of Welling United which saw The Wings finish in third place of the Vanarama South - they lost out in the play-final losing 1-0 to Woking. He left the club at the end of the season.

He then joined Dartford in October 2019 and took The Darts to 6th place in the Vanarama South pandemic season where depsite the league ending early the play-offs were played in July with Dartford beating Slough Town and Havant & Waterlooville before losing to Weymouth in the final on penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw. In the 20/21 season the Kent side were in second place when the league was declared null and void in February 2021.

A fourth placed finish in the 21/22 season saw The Darts lose on penalty kicks in the first play-off game against Chippenham Town. King departed the club at the end of the season.

Last season he joined Vanarama North side Gloucester City in September with the club in 15th place after ten games. He guided The Tigers to a 7th place finish and they subsequently lost in the play-offs against Brackley Town.

I'm sure with King in place The Hawks will start picking up wins sooner rather than later - they travel to Dartford on Saturday who are currently 14th in the table who have lost four of their last six league games played.

DOVER ATHLETIC
It's been a real struggle over the past few seasons for Dover Athletic.  The Kent side were promoted to non-league's top division in 2014 and finished in 8th, 5th, 6th and 8th. During the 20/21 season they only played 15 league games and were unable to play any further games to to costs relating to the pandemic. Their record was expunged and they were deducted 12 points for the 21/22 season as well as being fined £40,000. Just two wins in that season saw relegation form the Vanarama National League. They escaped relegation last season finishing just above the drop zone on +2 goal difference from Dulwich Hamlet.

Mitch Brundle, aged 28, has been player/manager since January 2023 after the departure of Andy Hessenthaler.

This season they have only won one league game which came back in August against fellow struggler's Slough Town. They are currently on a run of 9 league games without a win.

If their form doesn't improve The Whites will return to the Isthmian Premier Division for the 24/25 campaign which they last played in the 08/09 season. Of the top eight in the 15/16 National League only Dover Athletic, Braintree Town and Eastleigh have not gone on to play in the football league.

WELLING UNITED
Danny Bloor took over the Park View Road hot-seat in the summer after leaving Eastbourne Borough whom the former Eastbourne Town and Worthing boss had guided to 6th and 8th placed finishes in the Vanarama South Division over the last seasons.

The Wings had 16th last season under the management of Warren Feeney who is now in charge of NIFL Premiership side Glentoran.

They have two league wins so far which have come at home against Havant & Waterlooville (3-2) and away at Tonbridge Angels (0-1). On a positive note they have drawn their last two games 2-2 at Eastbourne Borough and at home to Farnborough.

SLOUGH TOWN
The Rebels finished 18th last season with Scott Davies in his first managerial roll being appointed in November 2022. Their form has been good in recent weeks with an excellent 2-0 FA Cup replay victory over National League side Ebbsfleet United to earn an home First Round tie against football league side Grimsby Town. They are also unbeaten in their last four league games with wins against Dartford and Aveley along with draws against Farnborough and Weymouth.

There is only 8 points between Slough Town in 21st place and Torquay United currently in the final play-off place 7th position so there is all to play for in this division.

THE TABLE THIS TIME LAST SEASON & WHERE THEY EVENTUALLY FINISHED

23. CHESHUNT - 23rd
