BELARUSIAN FOOTBALL - WEEKEND REVIEW

FIRST LEAGUE
There were some big winners on the opening weekend of the First League season. Former Smorgon and Khimik Svetlogorsk midfielder scored twice for Bumprom Gomel in their 0-4 victory at Niva Dolbizno. Lida won 4-1 at home versus Osipovichy despite being down to ten men for the final half hour of the match - Former Gorodeya, Slonim and Baranovichi midfielder Ilya Baglay scored two of the goals.

Maxline Vitebsk, who I expect to be right up the top of the table this season, signalled their intentions with a 0-5 win at Slonim. Nikolay Ivanov, who made 15 sub appearances for FC Minsk in the Premier League last season, netted two of the goals.

Two of three relegated sides were victorious - Arsenal Dzerzhinsk won 5-1 at home to Shakhtyor Petrikov with DNEPR Mogilev winning 3-1 against Orsha. The third of the trio are Vitebsk who were not in action and play their first game next weekend Zhodino Yuzhnoe who drew 0-0 with Volna Pinsk. Yuri Klochkov was the hat-trick hero for DNEPR - The former Slutsk player has now scored one more goal that the two he managed for his side in 28 Premier League games last season.

PREMIER LEAGUE
In the top tier Dynamo Minsk, Shakhtyor Soligorsk and Torpedo Zhodino are the only teams left with 100% winning records. Dynamo Minsk won 0-2 at Slavia Mozyr who are yet to score in their two games - Vladislav Morozov followed up scoring for Belarus in midweek with the two goals in this game.

Torpedo won narrowly 2-1 at home to Smorgon and Shahktyor won 0-1 at Neman Grodno thanks to 19 year old Egor Karpitski's goal.

17 year old Timofey Martynov got his second goal of the season for FC Minsk who drew 1-1 at Slutsk who scored via former Arsenal Dzerzhinsk player Nikita Melnikov.

Naftan looked to be collecting their first three points of the season being 1-1-0 up at home to Gomel who were able to equalise via an Aleksandr Anufriev header in added time to rescue a point.

Isloch's 3-0 home win over Dynamo Brest was one of the stand out results of the weekend - The 2020 champions have now lost their opening two games and face one of the other teams who have lost their games next weekend when Slavia Mozyr visit.

Belshina Bobruisk and Neman Grodno join that list although they have only played one game.

In the final game of the day Energetik-BGU took a very impressive point at BATE with Ilya Grischenko scoring his second goal of the season - The Student's capitalised on BATE playing it out from the back and losing the ball. Valery Gromyko scored BATE's goal from the penalty spot which was awarded when Energetik's keeper went to punch a cross and collided with a BATE player - The visitors, who were runner's up last season, continue to upset the odds and long may this continue!
