SOME FA VASE NEWS, STATS AND FACTS FOR 2022/23
Since 2008 a Northern League side has won the FA Vase on nine occasions out of fourteen finals played. Out of the twenty-eight teams involved in those finals thirteen have been Northern League clubs. This makes the fact Division Two side Horden Community Welfare are the only side Northern League side left in the competition this season a very rare one.
Horden Community Welfare were formed in 2017 after Horden Colliery Welfare, who had been relegated from the Northern League to The Wearside League in 2013, moved 30 miles away to be renamed Darlington Reserves. In 2018 they sperated from the Vanarama North side to become Darlington Town who were crowned champions of the Wearside League last season.
You could say Essex Senior League side Athletic Newham have some unfinished business with the FA Vase having beaten finalist's Littlehampton Town 5-0 in last season's Fourth Round only to be removed from the competition by the Football Association after it was found they had played an ineligible player in the tie. The East London side had a good 4-0 win over Southern Counties East Premier Division side Kennington on Saturday with Daniel Izekor netting a hat-trick and Richard Kone getting the other goal. Kone's goal scoring has been admired by many clubs higher up the pyramid - He has got 9 in 11 games this season with 42 in 48 league and cup games last season.
They will be flying to their Third-Round game as they have drawn Jersey Bulls - I wonder if they'll travel from London City Airport which is only a short distance from their home ground in Plaistow.
It'll be a huge task as The Bulls have so far played 16 league and cup games winning 14 and drawing 2. They have scored 41 goals and let in just 10.
It will also be a great experience for Athletic Newham who usually attract only a small number of fans to their games - a crowd of 25 was announced for Saturday's game. Jersey Bulls have had an average of 527 fans at their five home games at Springfield Stadium this season so far.
For Hellenic League Division One side Hartpury University it's been a wonderful first season in the FA Vase having already beaten Malmesbury Victoria, Clanfield and Tuffley Rovers at home along with a stand-out 1-2 win at Mousehole AFC in the Second Round. They are one of only two all step six games as they face Bovey Tracey at home - the other all step six game is Horden CW v AFC Darwen.
There are only two former winners left in the competition - Deal Town, winners in 2000, travel to East London to play Step Six side Sporting Bengal United. Current holder's Newport Pagnell Town are also on their travels to Thurlow Nunn Premier Division side Norwich United.
Only Billericay Town (76 and 77), Halesowen Town (85 and 86), Tiverton Town (98 and 99) and Whitley Bay (09, 10 and 11) have ever retained the Vase.
