The Campeonato Brasileiro Serie B is the second tier of the Brazilian Football League System. It has been played annually since 1971 - Since 2006 it has been contested by 20 teams with the top four promoted to Serie A and the bottom four relegated to Serie C.
In Brazil there are two simultaneous systems -
The National Pyramid which has four levels- Serie A, Serie B, Serie C and Serie D. The first three divisions have 20 teams with Serie D having eight groups of eight teams.
The State Championships are independent and include Serie A, Serie B and Serie C club with two, three or four levels. The sixty best placed clubs in the top divisions not already playing in Serie A, B or C qualify for the next season's Serie D along with the four relegated Serie C clubs.
For example in The 2021 Campeonato Carioca, which is the top division of football in Rio De Janeiro, saw the following placings in the Main Stage with Portuguesa and Nova Iguacu promoted to Serie D -
Flamengo 1st (2nd Serie A)
Fluminense 2nd (7th Serie A)
Portuguesa 3rd - Promoted to Serie D 2022
Volta Redonda 4th (10th Serie C)
Vasco Da Gama 5th (10th Serie B)
Nova Iguacu 6th - Promoted to Serie D 2022
Botafogo 7th (1st Serie B)
Madureira 8th
The State Championships run from January to April with the National Pyramid running from April to November.
So it is possible for a minor state club to rise up the leagues to Serie A - Parana Clube, Sao Caetano, Brasiliense, Gremio Barueri and Ipatinga have all done this in recent years.
The reverse can also happen with America Futebol Clube (also known as America Mineiro) relegated from Serie A in 2001 and then relegated to Serie C in 2004 - They are now back in the top division.
America Football Clube (Rio de Janeiro) did play in Serie A but now play in the Campeonato Carioca.
Back to the 2022 Serie B and we see Cruzeiro currently leading the table who are one of Brazil's biggest clubs having won Serie A in 1966, 2003, 2013 and 2014 along with the Copa Libertadores in 1976 and 1997. They have also won the Copa Do Brazil in 1993, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2017 and 2018.
They were relegated for the first time in their history in 2019 and have since finished 11th and 14th - It's looking likely they will return to the top tier for the 2023 season.
They are followed by Vasco Da Gama who are four times champion of Serie A - the last time being in 2000. Since 2008 they have been a yo-yo club -
2008 - Relegated from Serie A (18th)
2009 - Promoted from Serie B (1st)
2010 - Serie A (11th)
2011 - Serie A (2nd)
2012 - Serie A (5th)
2013 - Relegated from Serie A (18th)
2014 - Promoted from Serie B (3rd)
2015 - Relegated from Serie A (18th)
2016 - Promoted from Serie B (3rd)
2017 - Serie A (7th)
2018 - Serie A (16th)
2019 - Serie A (12th)
2020 - Relegated from Serie A (17th)
2021 - Serie B (10th)
In February it was announced a controlling stake in the club had been purchased by "777 Partners" who are a Miami based Investment firm - The value of the deal for 70% of the club was value of approximately $330 million.
Bahia, relegated for Serie A last season are in third place followed by Gremio who are another famous name in Brazilian football that currently find themselves playing in the second tier after relegation last season.
Diego Souza of Gremio is currently the top scorer in the division on 7 goals followed by Ponte Preta's former Corinthians and Fluminense striker Lucca on 6 goals.

CURRENT POSITION IN SERIE A OF THE PROMOTED SIDES FROM SERIE B 2021

CURRENT POSITION OF PROMOTED SIDES FROM SERIE C 2021

If I was to make a prediction for the top three at the end of the season it would be the three big teams in Gremio, Vasco Da Gama and Cruzeiro who will may well make a return to the top tier for the 2023 season.
If you think English clubs play too many games Brazilian Champion's Atletico Minerio played 14 games in the Campeonato Mineiro State Championship from January to April and then have 38 Serie A games along with 6 games played in the Copa Libertadores already where they face Ecuadorian side Emelec in the last 16 to be played in the next two weeks. They have also played two games in the Copa Da Brasil Third Round where thev are due to face Botafogo in the last 16 over two legs.
