At the bottom of the table we see SK Super Nova who were promoted from the Second Tier last season after a third placed finish - Turkums 2000 (2nd) and FK Auda (1st) were also promoted to bring the number of teams to 10 following the withdrawal of FK Ventspils and Noah Jurmala from the top division.

SK Super Nova have struggles so far drawing 5 and losing 11 of their 16 games played - they have only scored 7 goals.

At the top of the league are Valmiera who moved back to the Virsliga in 2018 after playing in the 1.Liga from 2004 - The have finished 3rd and 2nd in the top division in the last two seasons so could go one better this season?

Their only league defeat so far was on the opening day of the season to Riga FC - They have won their last 12 league games in a row! Latvian International Raimonds Krollis has been in good scoring form netting 11 goals in 16 games. 19 year old Columbian Camilo Mena has also been in good form with 7 goals in 16 games.

Krollis is currently top in the race for the golden boot with Serbian u21 International Andrej Illic of last season's champion's RFS whom he joined in September 2021.

Gabriel Ramos, who many will know from his time in Belarus with Torpedo Zhodino, is also on the top scorer's list netting 7 goals for Riga FC.

Another name for Belarus in the league is Manager Kirill Alshevsky with the former Dinamo Minsk, BATE Borisov and Rukh Brest boss taking over Liepaja in February.

In the fixtures this weekend it's top v bottom as Valmiera entertian SK Super Nova with the game of the weekend being RFS v Liepaja in a 2nd v 3rd clash.

BET365.COM rate Super Nova's chances of a win at 10/1 and a home win at 1/6. In the RFS v Liepaja game they rate a home win at 8/13 and an away win at 3/1.

As you can see from the table there is a 13 point gap between fourth placed Riga and 5th placed FK Auda so in the race for the European places and title it's looking like it will be between the current top four.

A name many fans will know from Latvian football is SKONTO RIGA and FK VENTSPILS. Skonton won the title in the first 14 seasons after Independence with Ventspils winning in 06, 07, 08, 11, 13 and 14.

Skonto had financial problems in 2016 and were relegated to the second tier going bankrupt in December 2016. FK Ventspils withdrew from the Virsliga in 2020 and have been banned from UEFA competitions for the next seven years  after UEFA brough charges of fraud, bribery and corruption against the club, the club's president and Sports Director.

On a more positive note Latvia's National Team are in good form and are currently on an unbeaten run of seven games as below - they should make it eight games tonight in their game against Liechtenstein. The majority of the players are selected from Virsliga clubs with players also playing for Cypriot, Polish, Finnish, Czech, Dutch and Germany clubs.

13/11/21 - WCQ - Norway D 0-0
16/11/21 - WCQ - Gibraltar W 3-1
