I've written about the history of Chingford Town and football in Chingford on TheColdEnd before (Forgotten football - The history of the game in Chingford - LINK HERE - This article was first published by TheColdEnd in June 2012 and updated in April 2020) and would love to see Chingford Town make a come back - who knows it could happen - maybe at Sunday League level?
Here we take a look at a programme from 1998 when Town found themselves playing at Townmead in Waltham Abbey and a home game against Chestnut Trojans who were formed as Walthamstow Trojans in the 1980s. They did play at the 'Ive Farm Arena' which is now known as the 'Feel Good Too Sports Centre' located between Leyton Orient and the Hackney Marshes.
Some information I didn't know this programme provides me with is that Chingford Town's clubhouse at their Newgate Street ground burnt down in the 1990s and was unfortunately uninsured. The club suffered vandalism and continual problems including the owner apparently increasing the lease by 400% and the manager, committee and players all leaving.
Kevin Ryan took the reigns of Club Secretary/Team Manager/Kit man etc etc and the club carried on finding themselves at Townmead for 98/99 season.
It's amazing to think in excess of 6000 people saw the first home Southern League game against Exeter City in the late 1940s.
