KEY
DENOTES RELEGATED FROM PREMIER AFTER ONE SEASON.
DENOTES NEVER PLAYED IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE.

TRANMERE ROVERS can perhaps be considered the most unluckiest team since the formation of the Premier League. For three seasons in a row under the management of club legend John King Rovers finished in the play-off zone but were beaten at the semi-final stage each time. In 1993 they were beaten 5-4 on aggregate by Swindon Town followed by a defeat to Leicester City in 1994 who won 2-1 on aggregate and Reading beating them in 1995 by a score of 3-1 over two legs. Which fan would of then thought by 2015 Prenton Park would be hosting non-league football for three seasons?

They join MILLWALL (two semi-final appearances), BRISTOL CITY (lost the 2008 final to Hull City), PRESTON NORTH END (two semi-final defeats and two final defeats) and BRENTFORD (semi-final in 2015 and final in 2020) as the only clubs to appear in the Championship play-offs not to have played in the Premier League yet. The Bees may change this record this season with The Robins and North End having an outside chance for a play-off place.

Up to end of the 2018/19 season only 11 play off winners have stayed up in the Premier League over 27 seasons. This stat doesn't read well for fans of Fulham for this season.

At the time of writing BRENTFORD, READING, WATFORD and AFC BOURNEMOUTH occupy the play-off places.
