WELWYN GARDEN UNITED played in the South Midlands League between 1969 to 1973 and then the Hertfordshire Senior County League from 1974 through to 1982 when they re-joined the South Midlands League and played in the First Division up until 1988/89 when they finished as title winners and moved up to the Premier Division where they spent just one season. This is a programme from the 1987/88 season when they played at the Gosling Stadium and the league was sponsored by Key Consultants.
Joining them in the First Division were Luton based Brache Sparta, Pitstone and Ivinghoe (their opponents for this game), Walden Rangers, Caddington, Stoney Stratford Town, Delco Products, Harpenden Town, Milton Keynes Town, Buckingham Athletic, Ashcroft Co-Op, Sandy Albion and Ickleford.
The Secretary's notes states this was the beginning of a new era for the club as it was their first full league match under floodlights at the Gosling Stadium which had been their home since they started in the Herts Senior County League. They firstly played on the top pitch and then in "the bowl" or the main pitch as we know it now.
The club had overcome their 'shakey start' to the season and had nearly folded due to lack of funds over the summer months.
United had drawn 2-2 at home to Buckingham Athletic in their last game and had lost to Pitstone & Ivinghoe in January by 1-4. S. Williamson was the club's top scorer with seven goals closely followed by P. Jay who had six goals.
