I've featured a Chingford programme on TCE before here v MARGATE - AUGUST 1963 but thought I'd feature another (due to the huge interest in the club and history of football in E4) as in April 1963 they hosted Hatfield Town (another club I have lots of interest in if you are regular reader!) in the London League Senior Section game.
Chingford lined up in red and white had Witty, Coombs, Jones, Leeland, Geddes, Poulson, Coyte, Todd, Bennett, Crossley and Chesseman in their starting XI listed in the programme.
Hatfield Town playing in light blue had Stevens, McLennon, Fleet, Greenwood, Wake, Mileham, Bradley, Bishop, Gower and B. Jay alongside E. Jay whom I presume may be related?
The programme welcomes Hatfield to 'THE HATCH' and states that Hatfield 'are at the foot of the league table, but their recent performances belies this position, and our lads will have to improve on their recent form if we are to remain league leaders'. It continues 'during recent weeks Chingford let a very comfortable lead slip from their grasp, and instead of making certain of being league champions for the very first time, we are now fighting desperately to retain our position' It states manager Dick Farrell has made some very notable changes. Chingford hosted Hermes on the next Saturday after this game.
Chingford did end up title winners finishing top of the table by just one point to West Thurrock Athletic. Hatfield Town were bottom of the table winning just one game in twenty played letting in 89 goals in the process.
The league at the time featured London Transport, Baldock Town, Ulysses, Hermes, Northern Poly, Slade Green Athletic, Barkingside and Epping Town alongside Hatfield Town, Chingford and West Thurrock Athletic.
