Barrow AFC's promotion this summer has put the Northern Premier League on level pegging with the Isthmian League with six teams each promoted to the football league since regular promotion/relegation was introduced from non-league in 1987/88 - The records above start from 1986/87 to cover promotion into the Conference of 1987/88.

Since 2004/05 and the creation of the National League North and South thus moving the divisions down to step three only Salford City and Barrow AFC have reached the football league.

What now for the loyal fans of Macclesfield Town? Hopefully the club can re-form like phoenix club BURY AFC who played their first North West Counties League Division One North game on Saturday winning 3-2 versus Steeton.
