The Tajikistan Higher League, which is the top football division in Tajikistan, is scheduled to start on Sunday with games being played behind closed doors due to the current situation regarding coronavirus.
In 1991 Tajikistan become an independent sovereign nation when the Soviet Union disintegrated although there was several years of unrest and a civil war occured - political stability was eventually established in 1997.
The league was established in 1992 when CSKA Pamir Dushanbe were champions - In recent years FC Istiklol have dominated the league winning eight of the last ten titles. 'Istiklol' means 'Independance' in Tajik
