FOOTBALL IN DAVENTRY ON THE WAY BACK UP

Fans of the beautiful game in Daventry, Northamptonshire haven't had a great time of it over the past few seasons with Daventry United losing their Royal Oak ground in 2010 and then folding in 2012 after ground sharing at Communications Park. The Motormen finished the 2011/12 campaign in fifteenth position of the United Counties League Premier Division. They were probably most famous Nationally for their 1998/99 FA Cup run when as 'Ford Sports Daventry' they drew 2-2 at home to Sutton United before losing the replay 3-0 at Gander Green Lane in the third qualifying round. They won the United Counties League Premier Division in 2000 and 2002.

Daventry Town had played at Step Four on the non-league pyramid after winning the UCL Premier Division title in 2010 but after a one season stay in the Northern Premier League Division One South in 2015/16 where, as the Southern most placed teams, they faced long journeys to Goole, Shaw Lane Aquaforce and Stocksbridge Park Steels they were relegated and in a move planned to reset the club’s financial problems they took voluntary relegation to step six football and returned to the United Counties League Division One they had last played in 2007/08. During the 13/14 season they had reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup travelling to then football league side Chesterfield where they lost 2-0 in front of 5,269 people which included over 700 of their own travelling fans.

The Town won Division One at the first time of asking before finishing in tenth place in the Premier Division last season.

This season they are currently eight points clear at the top of the table of the Future Lions United Counties League Premier Division. Both Rugby Town and Deeping Rangers (eleven points back in third) have a game in hand. Their only league defeat in their thirty league games played so far came at home against Eynesbury Rovers. The crowds have increased at Communications Park - figures of 70 and 50 saw their first two home games compared to 158 which saw yesterday's huge 4-1 victory over fellow title chasing Deeping Rangers.
