THE WELWYN CAMPUS KEEPER VERUS EIGHT BELLS IN 2013 - A GAME WHICH CAMPUS WON 3-2 WITH A LAST MINUTE WINNER HAVING BEEN 0-2 DOWN

NOT A CUP CLASSIC BUT COLNEY HEATH THROUGH TO THE NEXT ROUND

A VERY PICTURESQUE MOON OVER THE RECREATION GROUND LAST NIGHT

It was a Premier Division v Division One Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy First Round game between Colney Heath and Broadfields United on Tuesday evening. It was a return to The Recreation Ground which holds  for the visitors from Middlesex as they won the competition last season here with a 3-1 victory over Risborough Rangers.

This game was never a cup classic with not much goalmouth action on offer between two hard working teams on a superb playing surface at The Recreation Ground. It was won by the home side by one goal scored in the 75th minute by former London Colney player Spencer Clarke-Mardel - he hit the back of the net from just inside the box.

BOVVY 3-0 WIN SEALS BANK HOLIDAY LOCAL DERBY AGAINST SARRATT

It was the big Bank Holiday battle of the Hertfordshire villages in the the Spartan South Midlands League Division Two yesterday as Bovingdon entertained Sarratt. Both teams had moved across from the Hertfordshire Senior County League over the summer which Bovingdon had won the title by a huge margin of eighteen points from their nearest challenger's Letchworth Garden City Eagles with Sarratt finishing in sixth place of Division One.

Just under five miles separate the two team's home grounds so this game can definitely be classed as a local derby.

Bovingdon had moved across from a step seven division to a step seven division with Sarratt moving up from step eight so there was no surprise to read that prior to this game the visitors had won one game (v Clean Slate on the opening day of the season) and lost their three following games.

Bovvy, despite manager Lee Bircham leaving the club over the summer to be replaced by Martin Standen, had carried on where they left off last season winning three and drawing one of their opening four games scoring thirteen goals in the process.

It is Standen's first managerial appointment having played for Bovingdon, Welwyn Garden City, Royston Town, Cambridge City, Colney Heath and Hatfield Town during his career.

The pitch at Green Lane was in a great condition and will be the envy of many clubs who visit this season which allowed both sides to play some good football. It was Bovvy who were the better side especially in the first half and they took a 3-0 lead in at half time. Sarratt tightened up their defence during the second half and had a few chances to reduce the scoreline but it was the home side who again had the next chances hitting the bar and post towards the end of the game which was played in front of a crowd of 90 people.

The win puts Bovingdon on top of the SSMFL Division Two table three points from currently second placed Totternhoe - they travel to Grendon Rangers in their next game on Saturday. Sarratt host The 61 (FC) Luton in their next game also schedule for next Saturday.

BIGGLESWADE FC'S CUP COMEBACK HALTED BY INJURY TO SOHAM'S RUSSELL AND TURNER

It was a fantastic Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round game between Biggleswade FC and Soham Town Rangers on Saturday afternoon up until midway through the second half when a terrible clash of heads between Phil Turner and Callum Russell halted the game - it was one of those incidents which everyone knew was very serious as soon as it had happened. After around a twenty minute wait for an ambulance the players were still being treated and with no time limit given the game was rightly postponed by the referee. With Soham already making two substitutions up to that point as well I think it was the correct decision.

Soham had gone 0-2 up in the early stages of the game through a close range header from Lee Chaffey and Russell from the penalty spot - and with this being a step five v step four game they must of thought they were well on the way to avoiding a shock result.

Full credit to Biggleswade, who aside from a home defeat to Potton United in their previous game had won the other four of their games prior to this one, as they continued to play good football and scored a goal back via Alex Marsh. They looked the better side from then on in aside from a great save made by goalkeeper Ross Tompkins early in the second half.

MANY OF THE SOHAM PLAYERS CALLED FOR AN OFFSIDE IN THE BUILD UP TO BIGGLESWADE'S SECOND GOAL BUT AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THIS STILL TAKEN FROM THE VIDEO IT WASN'T EVEN CLOSE

Two goals then from Justin Leavers and Nick Henerbery then put Biggleswade 3-2 up and a shock result was on the cards up until the very unfortunate incident.

Phil Turner received treatment at the ground but luckily didn't need a trip in the ambulance with Russell who was given eight stitches to a cut on his head at Bedford Hospital - He was discharged in the early hours of Sunday morning. The Cold End sends them all the best and hopes they'll be back playing football soon.

A brilliant touch was the man of the match award given to Biggleswade FC's physio India Bunnage who was magnificent in helping out with the treatement of Russell and Turner along with many other people.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

The re-arranged game is likely to take place on Tuesday 4th September.

Soham Town Rangers narrowly lost 1-0 at Bury Town today in front of a good bank holiday crowd of 490 people. They entertain Coggeshall Town on Saturday in the Bostik League North Division. Biggleswade FC entertain North Greenford United in a SSMFL Premier Division fixture on the same day.

CUP GLORY FOR BARKINGSIDE WHO FINALLY SCORE A GOAL AND WIN AT WOODFORD TOWN

THE SUN SHONE ON BARKINGSIDE ON WEDNESDAY EVENING

It was a local derby with a difference as Woodford Town entertained Barkingside in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy on Wednesday evening. The twist being it was played 19 miles outside of The London Borough of Redbridge at Harlow Town where Woodford Town are ground sharing for this season - they hope to move to their new home at Ashton Playing Fields in 2017 which is brilliant new for local football.

Woodford had made a decent start to their 2018/19 campaign winning 4-1 (v Leyton Athletic), 5-0 (v St Margaretsbury) before losing to Sawbridgeworth Town (1-0) prior to this game. They were also backed by a number of fans including some Harlow Town fans who sang and made noise throughout the game with songs such as 'your the worst side of the 275' in a nod to the 275 London bus route which runs from St James Street Station in Walthamstow via Woodford and terminates at Barkingside Tesco.

'Side came into the game without a goal with three 0-0 results in the league coupled with a 0-0 and 0-3 FA Cup results against Leyton Athletic and in the opening moments of the match they would of been cursing their luck as Matheus Santos blazed way over the bar when having a chance for a clear shot on goal from the edge of the box.

Both sides played some good football with Woodford taking the lead just after Barkingside's luck wasn't in again when they had rattled the cross bar from a close range header. Woodford were awarded a hotly debated penalty kick just prior to the half time break when Temi Babalola had adjudged to have been fouled by Kofi Billzy.

The game changed just at the beginning of the second half when Woodford's central defender Jack Grosvenor was sent off after he tripped/made contact with Ryan Imbert who continued his run through on goal but had been impeded - Was there a defender who could of covered and the fact if it was a red card incident was also discussed by many of the fans watching.

The introduction of James Briggs by Barkingside, who sat just in front of their back four, and pinged some impressive passes forward through the rest of the game as Woodford sat further back than they had been and relied on their pace on the counter attack.

It was then a little piece of Barkingside FC history was made in the 60th minute of the game when Euan Taylor-Reid hit the back of the net after Alex Reed had parried Garjay Thompson's shot - Taylor-Reid nervously checked that the Assistant Referee hadn't flagged for offside as he ran to celebrate with his team mates - from the replay you can see he is clearly onside.  It had taken 'Side 510 minutes of football to score in the 2018/19 season!

Both sides had chances to win the game in normal time with the impressive Ola Ogunwamide going close for the home side but the game ended 1-1 and went to the drama of kicks from the penalty mark.

Nine perfect penalty kicks later it was Woodford who missed the 10th and last kick to hand Barkingside a memorable victory and seal their passage to the next round of the competition.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Barkingside host Southend Manor in a league fixture at Cricklefields on Monday evening in their next game. Woodford Town host Walthamstow on Wednesday evening.

On this showing I think both sides will do well in the Essex Senior League this season. Dee Safer with his assistant's Neil Day and Ross Weare have a good exciting young side at Woodford Town with former Clapton FC boss Michael Walther building a good side at Barkingside also - They obviously miss last season's top scorer Roddy Lemba (who scored their last goal prior to Taylor-Reid's notching) who joined Bostik League side Romford in pre-season.

Good Luck to both sides for the rest of the season.

LATE FLURRY OF GOALS SEALS LOCAL DERBY VICTORY FOR WODSON PARK

It was derby day last Tuesday evening as Wodson Park entertained FC Broxbourne Borough who made the short journey up the A10 for a Spartan South Midlands League Division game with a crowd of 54 people watching on.
On a bumpy surface this wasn't a classic game with Wodson scoring four goals in the second half through Craig Handy, Antonio Fusco and Mason Todd (2). The first goal was scored after a poor clearance by Broxbourne keeper Liam Nugent and their fourth was from the penalty spot after a much debated penalty decision. Broxbourne, now managed by Graham Lee, had played some good football beforehand with midfielder Isaac Pedro standing out for me. He is only 17 years of age but played really well in the holding/defensive midfield role. He is definitely a name to look out for.

On the balance of play Wodson deserved the victory but it didn't really feel like a 4-0 game - it may have been a different story if experienced former Cheshunt and Enfield Town midfielder Joe O'Brien hadn't had to have come off on 20 minutes with an injury.

Special mention goes to former St Margaretsbury player Mason Todd who came off the bench for Wodson and scored two of the goals as well as assisting with creating one. Good work!

The game was the last in charge for Neil Conner who stepped down from his position as Wodson manager due to a change in personal circumstance to be replaced by Neil Draper - Conner will still be part of the club's management structure. Draper has previously managed Welwyn Garden City and Hertford Town u25/reserve teams.

This game was played nearly a year to the day to last season's league match between the two sides which was played on Tuesday 15th August 2017 - both team's starting XI's were much changed since then with only Rob Green, Craig Tolley and Stephen Towers left in the Wodson team and just goalkeeper Liam Nugent in the FC Broxbourne side.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
apologies for the camera going out of focus for the second goal

Broxbourne banished the memories of this game with a good 2-1 home victory over Buckingham Town yesterday. Their next game is at home to Codicote next Saturday - The Cod Army lost 4-3 at Brimsdown yesterday. They then visit current league leader's Enfield Borough in the Division One Cup on Tuesday 4th September whose assistant manager is Roy Bleau who is the club's former boss.

Neil Draper has two home games to start his career as Wodson boss this week where they entertain Langford in the Division One Cup on Wednesday before Hillingdon Borough visit on Saturday.

BRAINTREE TOWN, BARNET, DAGENHAM & REDBRDIGE & MAIDENHEAD UNITED IN THE BOTTOM FOUR OF THE VANARAMA NATIONAL AFTER FIVE GAMES PLAYED

The bottom four of the Vanarama National League are the only sides yet to register a victory - although only five games have been played so far is it going to be a long tough season for them? It's extremely early days yet but I'm sure their fans will be wanting to get some more points on the board in the next few games played. Bank Holiday Monday will be a massive day for all four clubs with Braintree Town v Maidenhead United and Barnet v Dagenham & Redbridge taking place!

BRAINTREE TOWN
L 0-2, D 1-1, L 0-1, D 1-1 and L 3-4.
Scored 5 Conceded 9
It was always going to be a tough start for Bradley Quinton's team who were promoted via the Vanarama South division play-offs last season. Yesterday's game showed luck really isn't going their way when they were 3-2 up against Havant & Waterlooville but two extremely late goals from Nicke Kabamba in the 94th and 96th minutes sealed a dramatic win for The Hawks - a crowd of just 407 (the lowest in the league this season) saw this game - i'm sure those involved with the running of the club will want to see that improved in the next few home games.

They have a long trip to Barrow at the weekend who are currently in 11th place before a massive game at home to Maidenhead United who are managed by former manager Alan Devonshire.

Next two games
Saturday 25th August - Barrow
Monday 27th August - MAIDENHEAD UNITED

BARNET
D 0-0, D 1-1, L 1-2, L 0-2 and L 0-3.
Scored 2 Conceded 8
A indifferent start to the season under new boss John Still after Martin Allen left the club after one of his many spells in charge of the club following relegation last season. The fact only two goals have been scored through Shaq Coulthirst and Charlee Adams will be of concern to their fans - They lost at home to Ebbsfleet United yesterday with former Dagenham and Enfield Town winger Corey Whiteley (a player Still knows well) on the score sheet. Two huge games for The Bees coming up with an away trip to Chesterfield and a reunion with Martin Allen before The Daggers visit The Hive on Bank Holiday Monday.

Next two games
Saturday 25th August - Chesterfield
Monday 27th August - DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE

DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE
L 0-1, L 1-2, D 2-2, L 1-2 and L 1-2.
Scored 5 Conceded 9
Peter Taylor and Terry Harris had to recruit a number of new players over the summer following the reported financial problems at the club and also rely on younger players so it's fair to say all of their loyal fans would of known it wasn't going to be top half finish this season. Yesterday's team in their 2-1 defeat at currently second placed FC Halifax Town was a narrow one as has been all their defeats so far - the average age of their starting XI yesterday was just over 23  - I think they may need a few older heads if they are going to avoid getting involved in a relegation fight. They entertain Hartlepool United (14th) on Saturday before that aforementioned huge game against Barnet.

Next two games
Saturday 25th August - HARTLEPOOL UNITED
Monday 27th August - Barnet

MAIDENHEAD UNITED
L 1-3, L 0-1, D 2-2, L 0-2 and L 1-2.
The Magpies (like The Daggers) only have one point on the board so far which ironically came in the 2-2 draw between the two sides on Saturday 11th August. Alan Devonshire's side entertain Maidstone United (13th) in the live BT Sport game on Saturday before their trip to Braintree Town next Monday.

Next two games
Saturday 25th August - MAIDSTONE UNITED
Monday 27th August - Braintree Town

Back in June Barnet were 12/1 with the bookmakers to win the division but they are now rated at 25/1+. Dagenham & Redbridge were 16/1 but they have increased to 100/1+.

TAKELEY THE EARLY PACE-SETTERS IN THE ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE

It's early days in the Essex Senior League of course but Takeley are the early pace-setters topping the table as the only team with a 100% winning record after just three games played. They followed up 5-1 and 2-0 wins against Stanway Rovers and Stansted with an impressive 4-1 home win against Walthamstow yesterday. It's the eleventh season in the ESL for Takeley since they moved up from the Essex Olympian League - they have finished 3rd, 6th, 13th, 3rd, 3rd, 7th, 11th, 18th, 4th and 5th in that time.

Striker Stuart Zanone has started the season extremely well with seven goals in four games - they have also won 1-2 in the Emirates FA Cup against Norwich United.

They are followed by Hoddesdon Town and Hullbridge Sport on seven points from three games. Stanway Rovers and West Essex are bottom of the table as the only sides without a point so far.

Depending on their FA Cup results Takeley welcome Hoddesdon Town to Station Road next Wednesday in a league game which should be a really good game.

SOME STATISTICS ON THE SEASON SO FAR

WITHOUT A DEFEAT
Takeley, Hoddesdon Town, Hullbridge Sports, Saffron Walden Town, Redbridge and Barkingside.

WITHOUT A WIN
Stanway Rovers, West Essex, Tower Hamlets, Leyton Athletic, Enfield 1893 FC, Sporting Bengal United and Barkingside.

WITHOUT A POINT
Stanway Rovers and West Essex

TOP SCORERS
Takeley - 11 goals scores

WORST DEFENCE
Stanway Rovers - 11 goals conceded

BEST DEFENCE
Barkingside - No goals conceded
All three of their league games have finished 0-0 with their FA Cup game against Leyton Athletic also finishing goal-less and them losing the replay 0-3. So five matches into the season and they still haven't hit the back of the net - their next game is on Wednesday evening when they visit Woodford Town in the league cup. Roddy Lemba was the last person to score in a competitive game for 'Side in a 1-1 draw at Southend Manor on Saturday 5th May in 82nd minute of the last game of the 2017/18 campaign. I'm sure the goals will come soon!

LATE PENALTY EARNS A POINT FOR THE DRAGONS AGAINST HASHTAG UNITED

Hashtag United had made the headlines over the summer when it was announced they would be joining the non-league pyramid after being formed in 2016 by you tuber Spencer Owen having huge success playing exhibition and charity matches. The team are particularly popular with young fans with highlights of their games and behind the scenes footage on You Tube being viewed by millions of fans since they were formed.

The team entered in the new step six Thurlow Nunn League First Division One South for the 2018/19 campaign and former East Thurrock United assistant manager Jay Devereux was installed as manager.

Prior to today's game Hashtag had lost their opening game at Little Oakley 3-2, drawn at home to Hackney Wick 1-1 and lost at White Ensign 2-0 last week so there were still looking for their first victory.

Today at Coles Park where they currently ground share they welcomed Wivenhoe Town who were also looking for their first win of the season having drawn 1-1 with Wormley Rovers and lost to Braintree Town Reserves 2-1 as well as a 0-5 Emirates FA Cup defeat to Brantham Athletic.

It is a new era for The Dragons this season too as James Meadows had taken over as boss from Chris Hudson who had left at the end of last season. Meadows had joined after a very successful spell in the Essex and Suffolk Border League with Great Bentley where last season they won the Division One title winning twenty-three of their twenty-six league games played.

Since relegation from the Isthmian League in 2008 it was a struggle for the club in the Eastern Counties League Premier Division where they finished in the lower half of the table dodging relegation to Division One until 2015. They were champions of Division One in 2016 before 19th and 24th placed finishes on the Premier and relegation to the new division at the end of last season.

Hashtag included former football league player Tom Williams in their starting XI with his wife Nicola McLean (of I'm a celebrity...get me out of here! and Celebrity Big Brother fame) watching on from the sidelines. Williams, 38, has played for Peterborough United, Queens Park Rangers, Barnsley, Gillingham and Swansea City amongst other clubs during his career. Last season he made a number of appearances in the Cambridgeshire County League with Houghton and Wyton.

This was a highly entertaining game with both sides playing some good football - Hashtag looked the better side in the opening exchanges but the Essex side also looked dangerous going forward with their forwards Myles Passley and Aaron Donaldson looking impressive with lots of pace.

JACK HARRISON'S SHOT GOES PAST AARON REID IN THE WIVENHOE GOAL

Hashtag scored the first goal of the game when Jack Harrison fired home from the edge of the box past Aaron Reid in the Wivenhoe goal.

Wivenhoe had given away too many free kicks in their half during the first 20 minutes and this changed to the other end when Hashtag defended well for the final 5 minutes of the first half.

The second half saw both sides continuing to play some really good football with Matt Carter in the hashtag midfield standing out for me in respect of how he found time on the ball and his skill when he did so. Also Charlie Marley's work rate up and down the right hand side was brilliant before Aaaron Couch replaced him.

MYLES PASSLEY SCORES FROM THE SPOT FOR WIVENHOE AND THEN CELEBRATES MAKING IT 1-1

Both sides had chances to score before in the 80th minute Wivenhoe were awarded a penalty kick for a handball in the box. Passley confidently scored sending the ball down the right hand side with Jackson going the wrong way in the Hashtag goal.

Hashtag regrouped and went forward with Devereux shouting for them to win the game from the sidelines. They had a golden chance to win it right near to the end of the game when Neil Richmond got in between Wivenhoe centre back's Michael Southee and Lee Branson but his close ranger header from a Harry Honesty cross frustratingly went over the bar.

I think a 1-1 draw was about the right result with both sides deserving a point from the game.  I would say for both sides a win isn't too far off from what I saw today.

Wivenhoe Town entertain early season table topper's White Ensign next weekend before a FA Vase trip to Newbury Forest. Hashtag's next games come in a trio of league away trips to Braintree Town Reserves, Coggeshall United and Burnham Ramblers.

Thank you to everyone at Hashtag United for giving me and my little boy a warm welcome today - Good luck to both teams for the rest of the season.
