FA VASE UPDATE - FOURTH ROUND DRAW - WHICH TEAMS ARE LEFT & WHICH TEAMS ARE FAVOURITES?

The draw for the Buildbase FA Vase Fourth Round was made on Monday lunchtime with the following ties scheduled to be played on the weekend of Saturday 7th January 2017 - the winning clubs will receive £1500 from The Football Association's prize fund.

Shildon v Atherton Collieries
The current Champions of the EBAC Northern League Division One take on the Hallmark Security North West Counties League Premier Division side who won 0-3 at Penrith in the last round who also play in the EBAC Northern League Division One. Shildon (currently 4th in their table) won 1-2 at current table topper's North Shields (Vase winner's in 2015) on Saturday in front of a good crowd of 427 people.
SHILDON BEST VASE PERFORMANCE

ATHERTON COLLIERIES BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
1992/93 THIRD ROUND - LOST TO BRIDGNORTH TOWN

Billingham Town v Cleethorpes Town
Billingam Town are one of only five step six sides left in the competition. They play in the EBAC Northern League Division Two and won 1-2 at Bottesford Town in the last round. Cleethorpes Town are a step five side playing in The Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division where they are currently top of the table and have only lost one league so far this season. A good bit of trivia is their current home is actually in nearby Grimsby as they ground-share with Grimsby Borough and Football League side Grimsby Town's Blundell Park home is in Cleethorpes. The Owls have only entered in the Vase since 2013 when they moved up to the NCEL D1 from the Lincolnshire League.

CLEETHORPES TOWN BEST VASE PERFORMANCE

AFC Mansfield v Sunderland RCA
Like the above game this pits another EBAC Northern League team against a side from the NCEL Premier Division.  AFC Mansfield were only formed is 2012 by a group of three former directors of Mansfield Town - They were promoted to their current level after finishing second in the NCEL D1 last season. Sunderland RCA are currently in thirteenth place of the Northern League D1  and achieved a brilliant victory over 2012 winner's Dunston UTS in the last round.
AFC MANSFIELD BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
2014/15 FIFTH ROUND - LOST TO TADCASTER ALBION
SUNDERLAND RCA BEST VASE PERFORMANCE

South Shields v Morpeth Town
One of the ties of the round between two of the biggest teams left in the competition. Morpeth Town are the current holders of the Vase having famously beaten Hereford FC in last season's final. Both are members of the EBAC Northern League Division One and are currently in second and third place behind North Shields so are real title contenders alongside fourth placed Shildon. South Shields won 0-4 at Morpeth Town in a league fixture back on Saturday 15th October but in a one off Vase game in front of a massive crowd at Mariners Park anything could happen. A crowd of 808 saw South Shields victory over Staveley MW on Saturday and earlier in the season 2,651 saw their league local derby with North Shields.
SOUTH SHIELDS BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
1975/76 QUARTER FINAL - LOST TO FRIAR LANE OLD BOYS
MORPETH TOWN  BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
2015/16 WINNERS - BEAT HEREFORD FC 4-1 AT WEMBLEY

Gorleston or Basildon United v Coleshill Town
The match between Gorleston and Basildon United were abandoned late on as tragically a spectator fell ill and despite the very best efforts of the two club's medical staff alongside ambulance staff the man sadly passed away. A new date has yet to be announced as everyone's thoughts and prayers are with the club and the man's friends and family.

Gorleston are currently in sixth place of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division and have yet to be defeated in fourteen league games played. Basildon United are in eighth place of the Essex Senior League. Coleshill Town (currently 4th in the Midland Football League Premier Division) beat fellow Midland League side and FA Cup headline maker's Westfields 4-1 in the last round in front of just 87 people at Pack Meadow. For Westfields their FA Cup game at home to Curzon Ashton on Saturday 5th November in front of 1,178 must of seemed a distant memory. The fans of Coleshill will have been pleased at Dunston UTS exiting the competition on Saturday as on the only two previous occasions when Dunston have reached the Fourth Round the Northern League side have defeated them.
GORLESTON BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
2002/03 FIFTH ROUND - LOST TO BRIDLINGTON TOWN
BASILDON UNITED BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
1980/81 QUARTER FINAL - LOST TO IRTHLINGBOROUGH DIAMONDS

2013/14 FOURTH ROUND - LOST TO DUNSTON UTS
2015/16 FOURTH ROUND - LOST TO DUNSTON UTS

Sun Sports v Bromsgrove Sporting
Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division side Sun Sports are on their best ever FA Vase run - they reached the second round back in 2014/15 when they were beaten by Stanway Rovers. They face Step six side Bromsgrove Sporting who had an excellent 0-2 win at Nuneaton Griff in the last round on Saturday. Sporting, were technically formed in 2009 after a supporter's consortium's plan to buy financially troubled Bromsgrove Rovers and taken them out of administration didn't work out and another buyer was found for the club they formed Sporting instead. In June 2010 they were offered the lease to The Victoria Ground where Rovers had played and in August 2010 Rovers were suspended from the Southern League and dissolved. Sporting are having a brilliant season so far and are unbeaten in their league fixtures with only two defeats in Cup competitions against Ruby Town in the Emirates FA Cup and Sporting Khalsa in the Midland League Cup. Their form reads - WWWLWDWWWLWWWWDWWDWDWDWW so they will be formidable opponent for Sun Sports who are currently in ninth placed in the SSMFL Premier Division.
Sporting should bring a good number of travelling fans to Bellmountwood Avenue - 747 saw their last home FA Vase game against Lichfield City and 506 saw their last home league game against Stafford Town.
SUN SPORTS BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
2014/14 THIRD ROUND - LOST TO STANWAY ROVERS
BROMSGROVE SPORTING BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
2014/15 THIRD ROUND - LOST TO THURNBY NIRVANA

Newport Pagnell Town v Peterborough Sports
Peterborough Sports are top of the United Counties League Premier Division and have scored an incredible eighty-two goals in just twenty-one league games so far. Add to this the eighteen goals they have scored in their four FA Vase games so far and it's clear to see Newport Pagnell Town's defence is in for a busy day. The Turbines 0-4 victory at Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Wembley was very impressive against the North London side who had been in great form also. Josh Moreman got two of the goals who joined them from Step four side Spalding United in February along with Mark Jones (joined from Boston United) and Avelino Vieira who has also played for St Ives Town and Corby Town. Both sides will be well known to each other as both play in the United Counties League Premier Division. Newport Pagnell Town are currently in seventh place of the table - they played in the league at Peterborough on Saturday 17th September which Sports won 3-1. The Swans recorded a fantastic 3-1 victory over SSMFL Premier Division table topper's London Colney in the last round so will be no push overs.

PETERBOROUGH SPORTS BEST VASE PERFORMANCE
2014/15 SECOND ROUND - LOST TO PETERBOROUGH NORTHERN STAR

Sporting Khalsa or Sleaford Town v FC Romania or Tring Athletic
A real either of tie in this one. Sporting Khalsa were so close to exiting the competition on Saturday in a quite amazing game against Sleaford Town. They were 2-3 down going into injury time and down to ten men only for Captain Tesfa Robinson to score an equaliser. They took the lead twice in extra-time only for Sleaford to peg them back with the final score being 5-5 AET.
FC Romania and Tring Athletic played out a more sedate 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Hinckley are in fourth place of Division One just below Bromsgrove Sporting with Berkhamsted currently in sixth place of the SSMFL Premier Division. The Comrades are another side to have formed after another club folded when Berkhamsted Town came to an end in 2009. Crowborough Athletic or Bedfont Sports v Eastbourne Town
The Crows are one of the form sides in the country. Their 2-2 draw with Bedfont Sports on Saturday ended an amazing winning run of sixteen games and were unbeaten in twenty. Bedfont Sports will be very pleased at the 2-2 draw as they were missing three key players including their usual keeper Terry Buss and Captain Billy Jeffries - they were 2-1 down at half time and also went down to nine men after fifteen minutes of extra-time as they had already made three substitutes and had had a man sent off in normal time. Bedfont (eleventh in the Combined Counties Premier) will welcome The Crows for the replay on Wednesday evening at the Bedfont Sports Recreation Ground.
