Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Welwyn Garden City played new Division Two club Enfield Borough at the Hertfordshire Sports Village at Hatfield last night and it was the higher placed club in the pyramid who enjoyed a comfortable victory. The Sports Village is part of the University of Hertfordshire and is very impressive - the game was played on the 3G pitch but it also has a full size grass pitch and American Football facilities along with a gym, climbing wall and much more elsewhere on the other side of the complex.

Borough who will play their home games at Donkey Lane and are managed by ex Brimsdown boss Marvin Walker so it was no surprise to see a number of former Limers in their team including ex Enfield Town midfielder Leon Wilson.

The Citizen's manager Adam Fisher has improved his squad during the summer months after a fourth placed Premier Division finish last season with many people predicting a title challenge at Herns Lane this season. Their ground is currently undergoing some improvements so there first league home game is scheduled for Saturday 3rd September against Hoddesdon Town.

Welwyn dominated the first half and it could of been more than the 3-0 it was at the break had it not been some good work by the Enfield Borough goalkeeper. Borough played some good football at times but were caught offside far too often - it's definitely something Walker will need to work on in their training sessions. Their best chance came in the second half when Jack Metcalfe (formerly of Ryman Premier Wingate & Finchley) pulled off an amazing save to push the ball onto the angle of crossbar and post. It was 4-0 late on with another superbly taken goal from outside of the box (by Ives Luhasu) - their second goal had also been scored from long-range (Luke Robins).

It was Borough's second game in 24 hours having drawn 1-1 at Premier Division London Colney on Tuesday evening so it was a tough couple of games for Walker's new side but they would of learnt lots from both games in preparation of their Division Two campaign.

The Citizens goals were scored by James Ewington (2), Luke Robins and Ives Luhasu.

Enfield Borough entertain Ryman Division One (North) side Brentwood Town at Donkey Lane on Saturday so if you are an Enfield Town who can't make the long trip to Skelmersdale why not pop over and give the new side some support.

Welwyn travel to United Counties League Premier Division side Eynesbury Rovers on Saturday for their final friendly game followed by a Herts Charity Shield local derby at Hertford Town next Tuesday evening. We all know nothing can be really be read into pre-season form but Welwyn have hit four goals in three of their games so far (4-0 v Barkingside, 4-1 v FC Romania and 4-0 v Enfield Borough) as well as a 2-3 away win at Essex Senior League side Clapton. They have also lost 0-3 at Peterborough Sports and 0-2 against Barton Rovers.
