EDGWARE TOWN NARROW WIN CONFIRMS THEIR PROMOTION TO PREMIER DIVISION

MATCH PLAYED ON TUESDAY 19th APRIL

It's been on the cards for a few months as Edgware Town have an excellent playing record of just two league defeats for the whole season but last Tuesday evening Edgware's narrow 0-1 victory at struggling Hatfield Town confirmed their promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. The North London side return to The Gosling Stadium tonight to play Codicote where a victory will confirm the Division One title as they will be on 89 with their nearest challenger's Crawley Green (subject to their result against Langford) only able to get to 88 points. Thursday night sees Edgware visit Crawley Green so they could go to Bedfordshire as Champions.

An early goal by Adem Ali (I managed not to capture this on camera!) settled this game and they could of had another goal when a header rattled the cross bar in the first half.

It's a fantastic achievement for Manager Michael Roche, his assistant Fabio Valenti and their squad which includes a number of ex Enfield Town players like Paul Marks, Richard Morton and Craig McKay. Special mention must also go to centre-back Fergus Moore who at the age of 44 is still playing and giving the youngsters a run for their money - it's another promotion won for the non-league veteran.

SOME MATCH HIGHLIGHTS BELOW

For The Blue Boys it's been a largely a season to forget as they have struggled near the wrong of the table for most of it. At the time of writing they are in nineteenth position in the table with just eight wins from thirty-five games played. They did play some decent football in this game at times and with a little more luck up front could of scored a goal or two. They have three games left playing at Langford this Saturday, at home to Hillingdon Borough on Bank Holiday Monday and then they finish the season with an away local derby versus Codicote which is to be played at The John Clements Memorial Ground. The crowd of 78 was their best of the season so far - I would say 80% of the fans present were supporting the away side including England C manager Paul Fairclough who is Patron of Edgware Town. They have been averaging crowds between 20 and 30 - the sooner they can hopefully move to a ground they can their own in their home town the better - that's obviously easier said than done though of course.
