MASSIVE FA CUP GAME TOMORROW AT DONKEY LANE

We now know that the winners of tomorrow night's FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round replay between Enfield Town and Eastbourne Borough will travel to Kingstonian in the 3rd Qualifying Round. The K's eventually went through with the final score being 5-3 after extra time. Division One (North) Romford has been 1-2 up at half time through goals from Jack Barry and Ryan Imbert. Matt Drage equalised for the home side on 69 minutes (Elvis Hammond has scored their opener) to take the game to extra time. Amazingly Romford went 2-3 up on 94 minutes through Eddie Hart but unfortunately they were unable to hold on to with Nathaniel Pinney, Andre McCollin and Chris Henry putting the K's through.

There is only one place to be tomorrow night and that's Donkey Lane for the romance and magic of the world's greatest cup competition. Why not come down? If the game is half as good as the Kingstonian v Romford game sounded it'll be well worth it.

COME ON YOU TOWNERS!!

RYMAN PREMIER AND DIVISION ONE (NORTH) IN THE FA CUP - UPDATE

After the weekend's FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round games there are no Spartan South Midlands or Essex Senior League sides left in the competition. Leverstock Green (at Staines Town), London Tigers (at Needham Market) and FC Romania (at home to Sutton United) were all knocked out. All three teams can be very proud of their FA Cup runs this season and it's not disappointing to lose to teams from higher up the pyramid system.

RYMAN DIVISION ONE (NORTH)
NEEDHAM MARKET v Witham Town
Kingstonian or ROMFORD v Enfield Town or Eastbourne Borough
Blackfield and Langley or Willand Rovers v AVELEY
Harrow Borough v WALTHAM ABBEY

Three teams from the Ryman Division One (North) are definitely through to the third qualifying round with a possible fourth in Romford who have replay against Ryman Premier Kingstonian at Kingsmeadow tonight. Needham Market and Waltham Abbey both face teams from the Ryman Premier in Witham Town and Harrow Borough with Aveley making a trip into the unknown where they face the winners of the Blackfield and Langley (of the Wessex League) versus Willand Rovers (of the Toolstation Western League Premier Division). Blackfield are based just outside of Southampton with Willand a little further away near to Exeter in Devon.

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
BILLERICAY TOWN v Weymouth
Needham Market v WITHAM TOWN
KINGSTONIAN or Romford v Eastbourne Borough or ENFIELD TOWN
GRAYS ATHLETIC v Bromley
Dorchester Town v HENDON
Barton Rovers v CANVEY ISLAND
Dorking Wanderers or Biggleswade Town v MAIDSTONE UNITED
EAST THURROCK UNITED v Bishops Stortford or Tooting & Mitcham United
HARROW BOROUGH v Waltham Abbey
WINGATE AND FINCHLEY v Havant and Waterlooville

Nine Ryman Premier Division sides are definately through with Kingstonian and Enfield Town maybe joining them after their midweek replays. Both Margate (lost 1-2 at home to Calor League Division One Central Barton Rovers) and Tonbridge Angels (lost 2-1 at Division One South Redhill) suffered shocks against sides from lower down the pyramid with Maidstone United scoring a last minute goal to beat Brentwood Town 2-1 at The Gallagher Stadium.

Two more wins for the teams still involved and it's a possible money spinning first round proper tie against a football league side.

Haringey Borough lead the way in the Essex Senior League with a record of eight wins and one defeat from their opening nine games and an amazing goal difference of +29. Their closest rivals are third placed Clapton, fourth placed FC Romania and fifth placed Barking. If they win their games in hand Clapton would be on a points total of 22, FCR on 23 and Barking on 22. Borough's only defeat this season came on Saturday 20th September when FC Romania recorded a narrow 0-1 victory at Coles Park - this defeat ended an amazing 27 game unbeaten run in the league for the North London side. The record breaking run included Tom Loizou's side breaking Basildon United's run of 17 consecutive league victories which The Bees had held since 1996. Borough's 1-10 victory at Enfield 1893 on Saturday 23rd August 2014 was their eighteenth on the spin and they extended in to twenty-one league wins in a row prior to the FC Romania game. It is highly unlikely this record will ever be broken? Ex Enfield Town striker Walid Matata also equalled a record in this match with his seven goal haul the same as Ilford's Chris Stevens all time scoring record. It was also the first time since Wood Green Town and Edmonton merged in the 1970's to form the club we now know as Haringey Borough have scored double figures.

Prior to the game their last league defeat at home came on Tuesday 1st October 2013 which coincidentally also came against FC Romania (1-2). What is good to see is the crowd for the 2013 game was 23 compared to 78 who attended in 2014 which is an incredible increase of 239.13%. Below are some excellent highlights of Haringey Borough's 'away' victory at Greenhouse London yesterday (courtesy of @That_Bald_Owl)

Hullbridge Sports are currently in second place and are currently on a four game winning run. Their next games come next weekend at Takeley (who they defeated 2-1 yesterday - the reason for the quick turnaround of game is it has been rearranged due both sides being out of the FA Vase) and the then on Saturday 11th October they host Haringey Borough at Lower Road.

As stated it's Clapton, Barking and FC Romania who are probably best placed to give Haringey a run for their money in the race for the title. FC Romania, who up until last Thursday's shock home 1-2 home defeat versus Tower Hamlets had a 100% winning record, are in the best position. Perhaps they had one eye on their big Saturday FA Cup game against Conference South side Sutton United which allowed the East Londoners to get the win. Sutton raced into a 0-3 lead in the game which attracted a crowd of 434 to Theobalds Lane with the home side giving their more illustrious opponents a real scare scoring on 50 and 80 minutes to make it a nervy end to the game.

LEAST GOALS SCORED - SPORTING BENGAL UTD (3)
LEAST GOALS CONCEDED - BARKING, BOWERS & PITSEA, FC ROMANIA (4)

The next month sees some games take place between the sides who are towards the top of the table - the results of which will effect where teams finish. There is the aforementioned clash between Hullbridge Sports and Haringey Borough as well as Borough entertaining Barking on Tuesday 4th November. On Saturday 25th October FC Romania host Clapton at Theobalds Lane which is bound to be a memorable match between two sides with noisy passionate fans and Hullbridge Sports playing Barking which should be a decent game between two of the current top five sides.

It's a case of top v bottom this week as Thursday night football comes to White Hart Lane (it's not just Tottenham Hotspur then!!) when Haringey Borough host Sporting Bengal United who are the only side without a win. They revisit Coles Park on Wednesday 8th October for a basement battle with Greenhouse London which is when they have the better chance of getting the win that has eluded them so far.

ALL BACK TO DONKEY LANE ON TUESDAY NIGHT

A wonderful day to be at The Great British Seaside.
Eastbourne's famous pier opened this weekend for the first time since the terrible fire earlier in the year.

Eastbourne's noisy fans in the first half
Town fans in the second half
Enfield Town put in a tremendous performance this afternoon to record a 1-1 draw at Vanarama South side Eastbourne Borough in their FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round game. Town were the better side over the 90 minutes and some would argue they deserved to win with Corey Whitley missing a penalty when 0-1 up and Phil Kane's header well blocked on the line by the home defender when the score was 1-1. The Sports captain Ian Simpemba was very lucky to stay on the pitch following his foul on Whitley which won Town the chance to score from the spot. Regular readers of TheColdEnd will know I am not one to criticise officials I know what a difficult job they have but sure this was a goal scoring opportunity?? The referee decided not to book or even talk to the ex Wycombe Wanderer's defender who had hit the post with a header very early in the game.

THE LUCK OF THE CUP
2014 - TOWN ESCAPE WHEN EASTBOURNE RATTLE THE CROSSBAR EARLY IN TODAY'S GAME
2011 - MARK KIRBY'S EFFORT HIT'S THE POST IN TOWN'S 2-1 SHOCK DEFEAT AT STOTFOLD
Town took the lead in the second half through Neil Cousins who bravely headed the ball past the home keeper when he knew he would be clattered into. Superb stuff! Town could of gone 0-2 but as stated the penalty was well saved. The home side then went up the other end and won a penalty kick of their own which they scored from to make it 1-1 - The Cold End got so excited I managed not to film the Eastbourne Borough penalty kick!! Sorry to The Sports fans reading/watching.

Full credit to the Town player's who didn't stop working and battling - They most certainly looked the most likely to score a second. The replay takes place on Tuesday evening at Donkey Lane.

SEASIDE TRIP FOR ENFIELD TOWN ON SATURDAY

Enfield Town face a tough trip to Vanarama South side Eastbourne Borough on Satuday in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. The Towners will travel as underdogs but who knows some cup magic could be sprinkled on the south coast and an upset might occur. To get Town fans in the mood for the big cup game here is some history and more information about Eastbourne Borough -

CLUB HISTORY

They are nick-named The Sports as they were formed as Langley FC (in 1964) and then changed names to Langley Sports in 1968. They were renamed Eastbourne Borough in 2001 to reflect the town they represented. The clubs rise up the pyramid was a rapid one and really began in 1999 when Garry Wilson (now currently manager of Ryman Premier Division side and local Sussex rival's Lewes) took over as manager of the then Sussex County League side. In his first season they emphatically won the league title losing only one game in thirty-eight gaining promotion to the Southern League. Division One of the Sussex County League for that season also included Eastbourne Town and Eastbourne United as well as Whitehawk who finished in eleventh place. 2002/03 saw the club promoted from the Southern League Division One (East) after finishing runner's up to Dorchester Town on goal difference and after ended the 03/04 season in eleventh place of the Premier Division they started the 04/05 campaign as part of the newly formed Conference South division finishing fifth and winning the play-off final against Cambridge City. They then lost out to Altrincham in the North/South play off at Stoke City. In 2007/08 the club's dream was achieved as they were promoted to non-league's top division less than a decade after leaving the Sussex County League. They finished runner's up to Lewes but won the play-off final against Hampton and Richmond Borough on a memorable afternoon at Stevenage's Broadhall Way. The club played in the Conference National for three season's finishing 13th, 19th and then 23rd where they were relegated back to the Conference South where they have finished 18th, 12th and 10th last season.

They have performed well in the FA Cup in recent times reaching the First Round Proper in 2005 (lost to Oxford United in a replay), 2007 (lost to Weymouth) and 2008 (lost in a replay to Barrow). They have also lost to Ryman League side's Tooting and Mitcham in 2009, Harrow Borough in 2010, East Thurrock United in 2011 and Hendon in 2012. In last season's competition they were knocked out by Ebbsfleet United at the Third Qualifying Round stage.

WHO'S WHO AT PRIORY LANE?

Tommy Widdrington - Has been manager of The Sports since February 2012. Represented Southampton, Wigan Athletic, Grimsby Town, Port Vale, Macclesfield Town and Hartlepool United in the football league before ending his playing career with non-league Salisbury City where he took over as manager in 2009. He left Salisbury City in 2010 as the club were suffering from financial problems and was Assistant to Paul Sturrock at Southend United for a short period before taking over as boss of  Hemel Hempstead Town in October 2011. He moved to Priory Lane in February 2012. There is an Enfield Town connection here as one of his first signings for Borough was ex Towner Ellis Remy whom he took from Hemel. Remy went on to play twenty times on the south coast scoring three times. Widdrington took over in the hot seat from club legend Garry Wilson.

Lewis Carey - Former Bristol City youth goalkeeper who spent time on loan at Weston-Super-Mare whilst at Ashton Gate. Played for Bromley and Tonbridge Angels in the Conference South last season.

Marvin Hamilton - Born in Leytonstone. Started his career in 2007 in the football league with Gillingham where he made fifteen appearances before joining Dover Athletic for a short spell in 2008. He then spent time with Cypriot side APEP Pitsilia before representing Hemel Hempstead Town for a short period. Joined Eastbourne Borough in February 2012 and aside from a short spell in Australia for Brisbane Premier League side Albany Creek Excelsior has played for the club ever since.

Sam Beale - Left Back who was released by Brentford in the summer. Played for Northwood on loan last season.

Matt Aldred - Playing for his home town club. Matt has also represented Loughborough University. Has a twin brother James who currently played for the Metropolitan Police in the Ryman Premier League. James was an unused substitute in the game versus Enfield Town on Tuesday 9th September.

Ian Simpemba - Born in Dublin. Tall (6ft 2inch) defender who played in the football league with Wycombe Wanderers in 2002/03 and 03/04. Since then has played for Woking, Crawley Town, Aldershot Town, Lewes, Havant and Waterlooville, Ebbsfleet United and Dover Athletic. Joined Borough in September 2013. Club Captain.

Adam Watts - Born in Hackney. Began his career as a youth team player and then professional in 2007 with Fulham. He didn't make a first team appearance at Craven Cottage but did spend some time out on loan at MK Dons and Northampton Town. Joined Lincoln City in October 2009 where he went on to make 77 appearances for the then football league side. Joined Conference North side Gainsborough Trinity in January 2012 and was in the side which lost the play off final to Nuneaton Town. Joined Eastbourne Borough in October 2012.

Gavin McCallum - Born in Mississauga, Canada and has represented his country at u20 level four times and once as a full international where he scored in a 1-1 draw against Venezuela in 2010. Can play on the wing or as a striker. Started his career with Yeovil Town in 2005 where it never really worked out for him making only one appearance. He spent time on loan with Tamworth, Dorchester Town and Crawley Town whilst at Huish Park. Has since played for Weymouth, Havant and Waterlooville, Sutton United, Hereford United, Lincoln City (at the same time as Watts where he played in the football league), Barnet, Woking, Sutton United and Tonbridge Angels. Joined Eastbourne Borough in June 2014.

Dean Sinclair - Born in St Albans. Midfielder. Came through the youth system at Norwich City but struggled to make an impact as a professional at Carrow Road. He joined Barnet in 2004 and made 125 appearance for The Bees before moving to Charlton Athletic where it unfortunately never worked out for him. He played on loan for Cheltenham Town, Grimsby Town and Barnet during his stay at The Valley and has since clocked up many miles playing for Cambridge United, Arlesey Town, Hayes and Yeading, Lowestoft Town, Woking and Sutton United. Was a Conference winner whilst at Underhill in 2005 where he also was capped for the England C team five times scoring one goal.

Richard Pacquette - Another player to have clocked up some miles and clubs during his football career. He was born in Kilburn and started in the football league with Queens Park Rangers in 2000. He made 31 appearances for The R's and also played on loan at Stevenage Borough, Dagenham & Redbridge and Mansfield Town before moving to MK Dons in 2004. Since then he has represented Fisher Athletic, Brentford, Farnborugh Town, Stevenage Borough, St Albans City, Hemel Hempstead Town, Hampton and Richmond Borough, Worthing, Thurrock, Havant and Waterlooville, Maidenhead United, Histon, York City, Eastbourne Borough, Hayes and Yeading, Maidenhead United, Lincoln City, Bromley, Eastleigh, Sutton United and Maidenhead United again before rejoining Eastbourne Borough this summer. Has two full international caps for Dominica. Pacquette is the cousin of another well travelled striker (well over 20 clubs) in Jefferson Louis who is currently plying his trade in the Conference North with Lowestoft Town.

Elliott Charles - Born in Enfield in 1990 and started his footballing career with Barnet in 2008 after scoring goals in the youth system for The Bees. Went on to have loan spells at Farnborough, Lewes, Hemel Hempstead Town, Ebbsfleet United and Havant & Waterlooville before moving to Kettering Town, Dover Athletic, Concord Rangers, Hendon and Eastbourne Borough in 2012. Spent the 2013/14 season back with Dover Athletic before recently re-joining Borough in the summer. Has two full International caps for Grenada.

Jay Lovett - Highly experienced 36 year old defender who was born in Brighton. Started out for football league side Plymouth Argyle in 1995 but failed to make a first team appearance so moved back to Sussex to play for Saltdean United in 1997/98 before moving to Crawley Town for the 1998/99 campaign. Spent two seasons with Crawley before Brentford paid a then club record fee of £75,000 in July 2000. Played  28 times for Brentford but was loaned back to Crawley Town, Hereford United and Gravesend and Northfleet during his stay at Griffin Park. Joined Farnborugh Town in 2003 and then went on to play for Lewes (98 appearances), Aldershot Town, Eastbourne Borough (first spell at the club where he made 149 times), Whitehawk, Horsham, Tooting and Mitcham United and the Metropolitan Police. Rejoined Eastbourne in the summer.

Lloyd Foot - A product of the successful youth academy at Southampton where he captained teams containing Luke Shaw, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Calum Chambers and James Ward-Prowse. He was released from St Marys in 2011 when he was 18 years old. He scored 18 goals for Andover Town in the 2013/14 Wessex League (he's a centre back!!). Was with Sutton United for a short spell this summer before joining Eastbourne in August. He is now 21 years old and can also play as a holding midfielder. Having played for Southampton I'm sure if he works hard he may well get the chance to play for a football league side in the future.

THIS SEASON

The Sports have played nine league games so far this season winning four, drawing two and losing three. They have scored twelve times and let in twelve goals in those games. They won their first three home games versus Chelmsford City (2-0), Weston-Super-Mare (3-1) and St Albans City (1-0) before losing to Hemel Hempstead (0-2) on Saturday 13th September. Away from Priory Lane they have drawn on the opening day of the season with Wealdstone (1-1), won at Concord Rangers (1-3), drawn 0-0 with Maidenhead United and lost to current table topper's Boreham Wood (5-2) and last Saturday at Bath City (2-0). They are currently without a win in four games. The average crowd at Priory Lane has been 558 over their four league games played.

Top scorers so far are Richard Pacquette and Gavin McCallum who have both scored four goals each. One of McCallum's goals was a stunning 35 yard effort in the 1-3 away win at Concord Rangers.

GROUND

Priory Lane is on the outskirts of Town in the Langley area of Eastbourne. The ground has parking for around 400 vehicles and the post-code is BN237QH. The capacity is 4,151.

Entrance prices are £12 for adult with concessions at £8. Children under 16 are priced at £1 (Eastbourne's website doesn't state if they have to be accompanied by a paying adult for this price).

If you are going via train the main station in Eastbourne is a little bit of trek (over 3 miles) but there are other options in Hampden Park which is a little closer (2 miles) and Pevensey and Westham (1 mile). To get to Pevensey and Westham you have to change at Hampden Park. Probably your best bet is to go to Eastbourne or HP and either get a cab or (don't quote me on it!!) hop on a 'THE LOOP' bus which comes every 15 minutes and looks like it stops near to the ground.

Eastbourne is served by direct trains from London Victoria every half an hour on Saturday. For example the 11:47 will get you into Eastbourne at 13:13  - there are other trains available via a quick stop/change at Brighton.

Enfield Town are also running travel options to the game so check out enfieldtownfootballclub.co.uk for more details.

THE TOWN

One of the sights to see in Eastbourne is the famous pier which was partly destroyed by fire earlier in the year. The good news is some sections of the pier re-open this weekend including shops. a cafe, fishing platforms and the nightclub. The picturesque Beachy Head is just out of town as well which could be worth seeing if you arrive early enough.

There are numerous pubs in town including a Weatherspoons called 'The Cornfield Garage' which is very close to the station. According to tripadvisor the best pub in town is The Crown and Anchor located on Marine Parade.

There is also an area named 'Little Chelsea' close to the railway station on Grove Road and South Street which includes many bars and cafes that may be worth a visit.

Eastbourne Town's ground (The Saffrons) is a stone's throw form the main station with Eastbourne United's ground (The Oval) close to the beach and sea-front and Royal Parade on Channel View Road. Town don't have a game scheduled and United are away at Littlehampton Town so the big cup match is the place to be on Saturday. Although Eastbourne United Reserves are at home against Haywards Heath Reserves. Tonight (Wednesday 24th September) see's the big Eastbourne reserve derby at United host Town at The Oval. There are also Eastbourne Rangers and Eastbourne Athletic football teams who play lower down the pyramid in the East Sussex Football League.

Eastbourne Borough are best priced at 1/2 for a victory with Enfield Town the outsiders at 4/1 with a draw rated at 16/5.

16 HERTFORD HEATH 7 0 1 6 3 26 -23 1 0.00

The Hertsavers Hertfordshire Senior County League Premier Division 2014/15 season is now well under with every team playing seven games aside from Standon & Puckeridge and Cuffley. Standon are one of two teams without a win and if it's goals you want they are definitely worth a watch this season with an average of nearly 7 goals per game at the moment. They were involved in a 6-6 draw with Bushey Sports Club on Saturday 6th September. Hertford Heath are the other side without a victory and they have only scored three goals in their seven games - Their only point gained came in the 1-1 draw with Sarratt last Saturday.

At the top end of the division it's Belstone (last season's runner's up) that currently head the division with six wins in seven games. Last season's Division One champion's Hatfield Social are in second place and they are the only side without a defeat winning five and drawing two of their seven games. It's first v second at The Medburn Ground this coming Saturday when Social's unbeaten record will be sternly tested.

Bedmond Sports record in fifth place is an interesting one as their goal's conceded record reads 20 which is the fourth worst in the division. This is down to their 12-0 defeat at Whitwell (see report and highlights here) in August which they followed up with a 1-0 home victory over Belstone (the league leader's only defeat so far).

Goals conceded chart for season so far

Another interesting statistic is that Sandridge Rovers (third from bottom) have the seventh best defensive record conceded just ten goals of which three came in their 3-3 draw with Hatfield Social who have only let in five goals so far.

MERSON AND WILSHERE IN TOP THREE OF LEAGUE'S TOP SCORERS

The Premier Division top scorer's chart is headed by Letchworth's Sam Gittings on eleven goals followed by Tom Wilshere of Whitwell on eight. Ben Merson of Wormley Rovers is next on six goals followed by a clutch of players of five goals

The league's Aubery Cup starts on Saturday 27th September which is competed for by teams from both divisions and is looked forward to by every team in the league. Last season Premier Division Standon and Puckeridge won 4-0 against Divison One side Evergreen.

AUBERY CUP ROUND ONE
Saturday 27th September
Standon and Puckeridge v Hinton
Cheshunt Res v Chipperfield Corinthians
Wormley Rovers v Belstone
Evergreen v Mill End Sports
Bovingdon v Letchworth Garden City Eagles
Hertford Heath v Lemsford
Bedmond Sports v Sarratt
AFC Hatfield v Knebworth
Saturday 11th October
Whitwell v Old Parmiterians
Saturday 18th October
Belstone v Broadfields

The game between Whitwell and Division One Old Parmiterians should be a good one as OP have won all four of their league games so far including a 11-1 and a 7-3 in their last two games.

THE COLD END WINLESS LEAGUE

We are down an unlucky thirteen teams in the winless league which tracks the teams from Step 1 to Step 6 on the non-league ladder. Just one team remains from the first four steps in the pyramid being Walton Casuals who have played nine Ryman Division One (South) games and lost all nine scoring just six goals. Their next game comes away at Redhill on Saturday. Casual's manager Mark Hams has signed four players over the past week to put a halt to the terrible run they are on. 18 year old Kieran Scantlebury, 19 year old Bode Anidugbe and 18 year old Ebrima Adams have all joined from Vanarama Comference side Dartford along with 23 year old striker Myles Stephenson who joins from Vanarama South side Hayes and Yeading United. Could it be tenth time lucky for The Cauals at Redhill?

Ampthill Town and Seaford Town have the worst scoring record hitting the next only twice in their games. Totton and Eling have the worst defensive record letting in thirty-seven goals in just nine league games.

Ryan Moss has continued on for his new side as he was doing for Kingstonian last season. He scored 25 goals for The K's last campaign. Ex Gillingham and Notts County midfielder Charlie Allen follows with a group of five other players on seven goals including David Knight of Wingate and Finchley and Billy Medlock of Tonbrdige Angels. Both Knight and Medlock were summer signings from teams playing at Step 4 of the non-league ladder which proves if players are given a chance they can be fantastic acquisitions for clubs higher up the pyramid.

Medlock scored 30 goals for Ryman Division One (South) side Eastbourne Town during the 2013/14 season. This achievement reads better when you see Eastbourne Town finished bottom of the table.

Kinght scored 37 goals for Ryman Division One (North) side Thurrock last season and has also played for Aveley, Billericay Town and East Thurrock United in the past.

Enfield Town's Corey Whitley and Leiston's Gareth Heath follow on six goals.

There is no surpise to see Alex Read 'the goal machine' top of the early Division One (North) scoring charts. He scored an amazing 52 goals in the league and cup for The Hawks last season. He is followed by Ade Yusuff of Chatham Town who signed for the Kent side from Aveley in November 2013 and has also played for AFC Hornchurch, Stevenage, Banbury United and St Neots Town in his career. Ex Redbridge player Keiran Bishop has scored six times for Ware as has Luke Stanley. Ryan Imbert and Tyrus Gordon-Young.

Stanley signed for Soham Town Rangers from Kershaw Cambridgeshire League side Linton Granta in November 2012 and was top scorer for the club in 2013/14 with forty goals. Ex Thurrock striker Ryan Imbert has had a great start to the season with Romford as has Tyrus Gordon-Young of Thamesmead Town.

With eleven and ten games played already there looks to be only two teams in the race for the title in the Ryman Premier Division. Hendon are the team currently in third place on twenty-one games form eleven games played followed by Dulwich Hamlet who also played eleven times currently on twenty points.

An good indictator as to which team is likely to finish top is by looking at the average points per game of Maidstone United at 2.73, Margate at 2.50, Hendon at 1.91 and Dulwich Hamlet at 1.82. The average points per game to win the division over the past five seasons is 2.10. The two club's win percentages of 90.91% and 80.00% is way above that of the previous champions over the last four seasons.

Maidstone United's only blemish on their league record so far is the 1-0 away defeat at Tonbridge Angels on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August. On Tuesday evening Harrow Borough came within touching distance of getting something from their game at The Gallagher Stadium when with only around ten minutes to go they were 0-1 up thanks to a goal from Daniel May. However goals from Alex Flisher (79th minute) and Frannie Collin in the 90th minute sealed a 2-1 win for The Stones.

Margate have drawn at home to Leiston (Saturday 30th August) and lost away at Dulwich Hamlet (Tuesday 2nd September) and won the other eight of their ten league games so far. They took two games to get past Division One (South) side Folkestone Invicta in the FA Cup Qualifying Round (0-0 on Saturday followed by a 3-1 home replay win on Tuesday evening) whilst Maidstone United thrashed Sussex County Division One side Littlehampton Town 10-0 in their cup game.

This weekend Maidstone travel to Lewes and Margate are at home to Canvey Island before on Tuesday 23rd September all eyes will be on Hartsdown Park as the two title rivals clash before their 2nd Qualifying Round FA Cup games on Saturday 27th September. Should Maidstone United win the game at Margate they may find themselves (pending the results from the weekend) eight points clear at the top of the table albeit with Margate having a game in hand. There is certainly many games to play yet and it's looking to be a really exciting season for fans of both clubs.

The bookmakers currently rate Margate odds on at 4/9 with Maidstone United at 9/4 for the title. There is a massive gap then to Kingstonian at 22/1 and Dulwich Hamlet at 25/1.

VICTORY AT FORDE PARK FOR THE COD ARMY

It was fourteenth v fifteenth in Division One of the SSMFL yesterday evening as Langford welcomed Codicote to Forde Park. It turned out to be a very open game with the home side wasting a number of decent goal scoring chances in the first half where the score was 1-1 (I missed Cod's first goal on camera). The second half saw Codicote much the better side and once their second and third goal went in the home side's heads seemed to drop and they conceded another three before scoring a second themselves just prior to the final whistle. The visitors were missing a few regular first team players so on this showing they will finish much higher than their current position. Langford can take some positives from the game in that they are creating scoring opportunities and just need to be more clinical in front of goal.

CHINGFORD TOWN REFORM FOR 2014/15

The following article was originally published by The Cold End in June 2012 but is reproduced here with an update regarding Chingford Town reforming for this season and playing in the Essex Alliance League.

When Chingford played at White Hart Lane (or could it have been The Spurs Training Ground in Cheshunt???)

Chingford v Margate Reserves 1963

Today  we feature Chingford FC v Margate FC from Saturday 24th August 1963 in the Metropolitan League. The history of football in Enfield's neighbouring town is a rather complex one with numerous clubs popping up over the years. Here is time line which helps with the history (with thanks to Roger Reed of Enfield Town Football Club for completing some of the gaps that I had) -

1948 - Chingford Town join the Southern League and finish 21st (out of 22) and 24th (out of 24) in the two subsequent seasons. Eight teams from the 1948/49 season have since gone on to join The Football League.

1950/51 - Withdrew from the Southern League and first team take over Reserve team fixtures in the Metropolitan League. Town reached the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup where they lose to local rival's Woodford Town in a home replay 0-4. They beat Ilford and Crittall Athletic to reach this stage which is the furthest the club ever got in it's short history.

1951 - Chingford Town fold

1952/53 - Parkhill (Chingford) enter the London League. There is a Parkhill Road in E4 which is just at the top of Kings Head Hill which is where this name may originate.

1955/56 - Parkhill (Chingford) become Chingford FC and continue to play in the London League until 1962/63

1963/64   - Chingford FC play in the Metropolitan League Division Two for one season.

1964/65 - Chingford FC join the Greater London League

1971/72 - Greater London League merges with Metropolitan League to form 'Metropolitan London League'

1975 - Chingford FC are founder members of the London Spartan League which is formed when 'Metropolitan London League and 'Spartan League' merge.

1979/80 - Chingford FC finish 5th in the Premier Division (the highest position in their 11 season stay)...competing against teams such at Berkhamsted Town, Amersham Town, Merstham, Fisher Athletic (who finished 8th) and Kingsbury Town amongst others.

1987 - Chingford FC leave the London Spartan League

1991 - Chingford Wanderers join the London Spartan League Division Two

1992 - Chingford Wanderers change name to Chingford Town and play in the London Spartan League

1993/94 - Chingford Town withdraw from the LSL and record expunged

1994/95 - Chingford United join the LSL Division Two

1997 - Chingford United change name to Chingford Town and are founder members of the Spartan South Midlands League Division One

1998/99 - Chingford Town leave SSML after finishing bottom of the table and conceding 174 goals in just 24 games.

1999 - Chingford Town join the London Intermediate League and compete for three seasons until 2002.

2007 - Chingford Athletic FC form and play in the Ilford and District League

2009 - Chingford Harriers FC form and play in the Ilford and District League

2010 - Chingford Town whom had been playing in the GA Roberts Enfield Alliance withdraw from the League after failing to fulfill their fixtures.

2011/12 - Chingford Athletic move up the pyramid and join the Essex Olympian League finishing 9th in Division Three. The club also moves to the Matchday Centre aka Wadham Lodge.

********UPDATE FROM ORIGINAL ARTICLE IN 2012*********

2014/15 - Chingford Town reform and join the newly formed Essex Alliance League (a merger of the Essex Business Houses and Ilford and District Leagues). Town play in the Premier Division alongside Chingford Atlhetic (who have dropped down from the EOL) and Chingford Harriers.

Town play their home games at the Jubilee Sports Ground in Highams Park, Athletic at Leyton Sixth Form college in E10 and Harriers at Parmiter's School in E4.

You can follow Chingford Town on twitter - @ChingfordTownFC

The programme issued for this match was simple four pager with the team line ups in the centre pages along with club notes on the rear page. The club notes are very interesting as they state 'we would take this opportunity of expressing our sincere gratitude to the officials of Tottenham Hotspur FC for the use of the ground, it is indeed a very fine gesture by this great club' which appears to indicate this game was played at White Hart Lane??.... or most probably at the then Spur's training ground in Cheshunt which at the time had three pitches. One had a stand which held around 40-50 people.

The notes go on 'of todays game, we are all anxious to see how our lads shape up to this new venture. Margate are considered to be one of the best teams in the league, but the lads have the ability to rise to the occasion and it should prove a truly great game. We hope that our own ground will be ready by the 14th September, when we entertain the Civil Services in the London Senior Cup'

This fixture was played in the Metropolitan League Division Two and it was against the reserve side of Margate as at the time their first team played in the Southern League.

The Metropolitan League was formed in 1949 and went on until 1975 when a merger with the Spartan League created the London Spartan League. It had been named the Metropolitan-London League from 1971 to 1975 after a merger with The Greater London League. The league featured many football league 'A' sides during the 1950's and 1960's with Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton Athletic all wining the league title in this period. The winners of the last Metropolitan League in 1971 were Epping Town with Cray Wanderers winning the 1975 Metropolitan-London League. The wikipedia page for the league is full of lots of nice information here.

The notes end with 'GOOD LUCK CHINGFORD'

Chingford Town and Chingford FC played at a ground in Newgate Street which if your familiar with the area is just off of Friday Hill near to Woodford Golf Course. The following pictures were taken by TheColdEnd recently and they show that there is not much left of a football stadium let alone a pitch. There are remnants/remains of a scaffold type stand and some concrete terracing which I think were part of the ground -

It's not just football in the local area which has unfortunately seen stadiums disappear, as more famously the nearby Walthamstow Dog Stadium has very sadly stood empty and unused since August 2008. At one point in time there were 33 greyhound tracks in London but now only Romford, Wimbldeon and Crayford remain. As this Waltham Forest Guardian article reports (from Tuesday 8th May 2012) planning permission for the building of a housing estate have been passed. The Save Our Stow website also has news on the current status of the site. The current status is that the approved application has to be referred to London Mayor Boris Johnson and the Greater London Assembly. What will happen is still unknown??

***************UPDATE FROM ORIGINAL ARTICLE IN 2012***********

In October 2012 planning permission to build housing and a leisure centre on the site was passed. The famous stadium now has little chance of reopening which is a crying shame for the heritage and history of London and the local community in my opinion.

FA CUP UPDATE - SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND

The draw for the second qualifying round of the FA Cup has been made and the following teams are left in the draw looking for some more Cup Glory -

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE
Staines Town v LEVERSTOCK GREEN
Needham Market v LONDON TIGERS

Just two Spartan South Midlands League teams remain. Leverstock Green won 1-2 away at Biggleswade United on Saturday and now face a very tough looking trip to Vanarama South side Staines Town. The Middlesex side are currently 18th in the table winning three and losing five of their games so far.

London Tigers beat Ryman Division One (North) side Brightlingsea Regent 1-0 at Avenue Park and now also have an away trip. They go to Needham Market who currently top the Division One (North) and recorded an excellent 2-4 away win at Cambridge City at the weekend to get to this stage.

ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE
FC ROMANIA v Sutton United

FC Romania, playing in the FA Cup for the first time in their short history, are making lots of headlines for themselves and the Essex Senior League. On Saturday they went to Ryman Division One (North) side AFC Sudbury as underdogs and recorded a famous 1-3 win to get to the Second Qualifying Round stage. Sutton United, currently sixth in the Vanarama South, visit Theobalds Lane on Saturday 27th September which is a game which will attract a decent crowd. Sutton will know they will be in for a game against FCR.

RYMAN DIVISION ONE (NORTH)
Maidstone United v BRENTWOOD TOWN
NEEDHAM MARKET v London Tigers
Grays Athletic or HARLOW TOWN v Hastings United
ROMFORD v Kinstonian
Boston United v St Neots Town or DEREHAM TOWN
THURROCK v AVELEY
WALTHAM ABBEY v North Greenford United or Northampton Sileby Rangers

Six Division One (North) sides are through to the Second Qualifying Round stage with possibly Harlow Town and Dereham Town as well subject to the result of their midweek replays. Brentwood Town have the toughest tie travelling to Premier Division table topper's Maidstone United who won 10-0 versus Litttlehampton Town at the weekend!

There is also an ultra local Essex derby when Aveley travel the distance of just over a mile to Ship Lane to play Thurrock.

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
BILLERICAY TOWN v Raynes Park Vale
WITHAM TOWN V BOGNOR REGIS TOWN or LEWES
Eastbourne Borough v ENFIELD TOWN
Folkestone Invicta or MARGATE v Barton Rovers or Northwood
GRAYS ATHLETIC or Harlow Town v Hastings United
HENDON v LEISTON
Burnham v CANVEY ISLAND
Romford v  KINGSTONIAN
MAIDSTONE UNITED v Brentwood Town
Boreham Wood v PEACEHAVEN AND TELSCOMBE or East Preston
South Park or METROPOLITAN POLICE v AFC HORNCHURCH or EAST THURROCK UNITED
Redhill v TONBRIDGE ANGELS
VCD ATHLETIC v HARROW BOROUGH
Hitchin Town v WINGATE AND FINCHLEY or Ipswich Wanderers

Four Ryman Premier Division sides were knocked out on Saturday. Dulwich Hamlet (v Worthing), Leatherhead (v Faversham Town) and Bury Town (v Romford) all lost to teams from Step 4 of the pyramid with Hampton and Richmond Borough being edged out 3-2 at VCD Athletic. Nince teams are involved in midweek replays and eleven are definately through.

ENFIELD TOWN V FELIXSTOWE AND WALTON HIGHLIGHTS ABOVE

The tie that stands our for The Cold End (being an Enfield Town fan) is of course Town's trip to Eastbourne Borough. The Sports have an impressive recent record in the competition reaching the First Round Proper in 2005/06, 2007/08 and 2008/09. Last season they lost at Ebbsfleet United in the Third Qualifying Round. They are currently managed by Tommy Widdrington who joined them in 2012 who has also managed at Hemel Hempstead Town and Salisbury City.

It'll be a very tough test for Bradley Quinton's side who will be the underdogs as Borough are currently seventh in their table winning four, drawing two and losing two of the games so far. They are very strong at their Priory Lane home winning three of their four games played. Their current average crowd is 558 (lowest being 410 and highest 733).

Before the big cup tie they travel to Bath City on Saturday 20th September - I'm sure Enfield Town fans will have an eye on the result of this game at Twerton Park.

It's a fantastic seaside trip to look forward to for The Enfield Town Ultras who will be in attendance in large numbers out to make some noise, back their team 100%  and hope the Town can cause an upset!!

The winners of the 2nd Qualifying Round games pick up an impressive £4,500 from the Football Association prize fund.

NO GOALS AT WODSON PARK

Wodson Park entertained Bush Hill Rangers in a Spartan South Midlands League Division One game on Wednesday evening. Going into the game Wodson had played six league games drawing two and losing four scoring eight and letting in eighteen with Bush Hill making a great start to their life at Step 6 of the non-league ladder winning three drawing one and losing one of their opening five fixtures.

Both teams never really got going on the night and the game finished goalless. Rangers were reduced to ten men on half time for an off the ball incident which caused a little bit of a 'handbags' between the two teams. The ten men worked hard in the second half and created a few decent chances to score but it ended all square with both teams happy to get a point on the night.

Wodson are now one of four teams in Division One without a win joining Amersham Town, Winslow United and Arlesey Town Reserves. There are five teams currently unbeaten - Welwyn GC, Bedford, Harpenden Town, Baldock Town and Hatfield Town.

Wodson get a chance to record their first win with a local derby game at FC Broxbourne Borough today and then a home game with Bedford on Wednesday followed by Southall visiting Wodson on Saturday 20th September. Rangers host Southall at Goldsdown Road today and travel to Harpenden Town on Saturday 20th September.

0-2 TO THE SMALL TOWN NEAR HATFIELD

Edgware Town's Barmy Army!!
"You're just a small town near Hatfield!!!" sang the two very noisy Edgware Town fans on the Underhill terraces towards the large contingent of travelling fans from Welwyn Garden City. Edgware are playing at Barnet's old ground for the first few months of the season whilst a 3G surface is installed at their new home of Silver Jubilee Park in  Kingsbury. Many Bee's fans took the opportunity to take a look at the stadium they have so many fond memories of on Tuesday evening. It is still in good condition having been used as a training base and for reserve matches by the London Broncos rugby league side.

The game was a won with two second half goals from Welwyn Garden City to maintain their impressive 100% winning start to their league campaign. Daryl Smith and Jason Caswell were the scorers on a night where The Citizens didn't play as well as they could but they worked hard to grind out the win which they just about deserved.

Edgware have a few more games scheduled to take place at Underhill so you've still got a chance to see the stadium as it stands now. They play Bedford on Saturday 20th September, Kings Langley (Cup) on Tuesday 23rd September and Amersham Town on Saturday 27th September. Check out their website here for details.

Welwyn Garden City's next game comes on Saturday when they travel to Ryman Divison One (North) side Thurrock in the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round. Cup fever has spread across the town and there are now two coach loads of fans set to travel to Essex to cheer on Adam Fisher's team.
