The FA Vase Fifth Round games take place this coming weekend as well as the remaining two weather delayed Fourth Round games with the bookmakers making Northern League Spennymoor Town clear odds on favourites. The winners of the Northern League for the past three seasons are certainly a very strong team The Moors haven't lost at home all season and welcome Bemerton Heath Harlequins to their Brewery Field ground on Saturday.
Guernsey are 2nd favourites at a real value 9/1 but they face a really tough trip to United Counties League side Spalding United. The Lincolnshire club have won twelve of their last thirteen games with The Green Lions scraping through in the last round in a 5-6 victory at Rye United. They have only played four league games since the beginning of November and now face a really hetic schedule to fit all their games in by the end of the season. The only game Spalding lost was the Boxing Day local derby against Holbeach United who are run away leaders of the UCL Premier Division. The Tulips v The Green Lions is certainly one of the games of the weekend and will attract a decent crowd to The Sir Halley Stewart Field.
It could even still be an 'Island final' as Newport (IOW) are still in the competition and face Ascot United in the fifth round. What price a Newport v Guernsey final?
Spartan South Midlands League side Ampthill Town beat Enfield 1893 3-0 this past Saturday and now entertain Eastern Counties League side Hadleigh United. Ampthill gained many friends when battling their way through to the Fourth Round last season as a Step 6 side where they eventually narrowly lost away to Oadby Town. Can they go two rounds better and reach the Quarter Finals this season?
Kent League side Tunbridge Wells are the side rated least likely to lift the Vase at 66/1. They face last season's winner's Dunston UTS on Saturday in a weather delayed Fourth Round tie. Dunston are 16/1 to win it again and maybe could be a good bet?
The familiar name of Whitley Bay (winners in 2008, 2009 and 2010) will once again be missing from Wembley this season after they were knocked out by Eastern Counties League front runner's Brantham Athletic. David Grimwood scored the only goal of the game in extra time for the Suffolk side to record a famous home victory. They now entertain another North-East side in Shildon on Saturday. A Suffolk side has never lifted the Vase so could this year be that time? (AFC Sudbury went so close losing finals in 03, 04 and 05...prior to that Sudbury Town lost in the final replay in 1989)
