Enfield Town travel to old rivals Wingate and Finchley on Tuesday night for local derby Ryman Premier Division game with an all important three points up for grabs. A victory for either side would lead them further away from the bottom two.
Whenever we play at The Henry Abrahams Stadium the memories of the play-off semi-final in 2010 will come flooding back in what was arguably the best evening supporting our club since it was formed in 2001. As well as the victory for Town that evening the thing that will stick in the memory for me is the gracious way the Wingate players, officials and supporters took their defeat and wished us all luck in the final.
Since Town faced Wingate in our opening home game of the season (which was also an eventful game) much has changed with our near neighbours. Dave Norman has left the club and has been replaced in the hot-seat by Gary Meakin who joined from Evo Stik Southern League Central Division Northwood. Only goalkeeper Bobby Smith and defender Daniel Nielsen remained in their starting XI for the midweek game at Carshalton Athletic last week in comparison with the game at Donkey Lane.
Experienced defender Ronayne Marsh-Brown has followed Meakin from Northwood. He counts Harrow Borough, Crawley Town, Welling United, Dorchester Town, Macclesfield Town and Bath City amongst his former clubs. Midfielder/Defender Ahmet Rifat whom had so many battles with Town's Paul Marks in previous games has also re-joined the club. Daniel McGonigle (midfielder) has joined from Harrow Borough. Another player to move from Northwood is midfielder John Christian who had a previous spell with the club as well as playing for Cockfosters and Wealdstone. Centre forward Anthony Thomas has joined from Lewes. He has also played for Hemel Hempstead Town, Barnet and Bromley amongst other clubs. Another midfielder Andre Scarlett (former Luton Town, Chelmsford City, Chesham United, Stevenage Borough and Staines Town) has also joined.
The fact that Town trio Mark Henry, Joe O'Brien and David Laird are all ex Wingate and Finchley players adds some spice to the fixture. Henry played for The Blues in the game at Donkey Lane.
Wingate's last three games have been a 1-3 home defeat against Bury Town, an important midweek victory at Carshalton Athletic (1-2) and a narrow 2-1 defeat to the Metropolitan Police on Saturday.
There is near full programme of Premier Division fixtures on Tuesday night. Bury Town host Thurrock, Concord Rangers welcome Lowestoft Town, Wealdstone go to East Thurrock United, Hampton and Richmond face Hendon, Harrow Borough look to follow up their amazing win against Whitehawk with a home game against Kingstonian, Lewes play Carshalton Athletic, Cray Wanderers travel down to Whitehawk and Leiston face a very long midweek journey to Margate. Leiston are unbeaten in eight league away games and have won their last three trips to Carshalton Athletic, Thurrock and Harrow Borough.
Below are highlights of previous games between Enfield Town and Wingate and Finchley. They are the Ryman Premier Division game played earlier in the season at Donkey Lane, The Ryman Division One game played at Wingate in February 2011 and the Play-Off semi-final in 2010.
