JETS LIFT THE HERTS FA CHARITY SHIELD

Wednesday night saw the 87th final of the Hertfordshire FA Charity Shield played between Oxhey Jets and Kings Langley at the Herts FA ground in Letchworth.

The Jets had finished 17th in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division with Kings Langley in 4th place of Division One. Both sides had already visited the County Ground this season with Kings Langley lifting the Senior Centenary Trophy in March (highlights here) and The Jets making a glorious run to the final of the Herts FA Senior Cup where despite putting in a good performance they found Blue Square North Bishops Stortford were too good for them. This was Kings Langley's third cup final of the season as they also reached the final of the SSMFL Division One Cup where Crawley Green narrowly beat them 2-1 with a very late winning goal.

It was the Jets who came out on top to lift the Shield which was first lifted back in 1920 by Hertford Town. Since then the invitational competition for Senior sides in the county has been won by clubs such as 'Shredded Wheat' (beat Hitchin Town Res 4-1 in 1934) and 'Rolls Royce Engines' (in 1975 when they beat Baldock Town and 1976 when they beat Berkhamsted Town).

The second half was played in extremely wet testing conditions with the rain tipping it down for the full 45 minutes.
