On Tuesday 8th February 1994 Enfield FC travelled to the White Lion Ground to face Edgware Town in Middlesex Senior Cup Second Round tie. It was a busy time for the E's with the game sandwiched between a home 1-0 league victory over Grays Athletic and an FA Trophy away day at Worthing. The Grays game was goalkeeper John Burridge's debut for the club then managed by Graham Robers who was ably assisted by George Borg. Burridge was replaced by reserve Steve White for this game but Lee Francis, Martin St Hilaire, John Ridout, John Bailey, Richard 'the football genius' Cherry, Gary Britnell and Leroy Whale all started the game so it was a strong E's side.
The game will be remembered by some E's fans as the one where George Borg played some of the game. However, for Enfield Town's manager Steve Newing, it will be remembered for his hat-trick playing alongside Scott McGleish in the home side's incredible 5-4 victory AET.
The Cold End thanks Laurence Hughes of hughesvideoservices.co.uk for the below footage of our great manager's hat-trick. The footage is not the best quality as it's off my VHS compilation tape that has been gathering just a little bit of dust packed away in a cupboard for the last decade but it shows that Steve certainly knew where the goal was!!
hughesvideoservices.co.uk filmed many games for the E's during the early and mid 90's and hopefully by early next year will be selling DVD copies from the website, which of course, will be of a much better quality. If you were an E's fan at the compilation tapes are absolutely magic and bring back some fantastic memories of some quality days and nights following the old club.
Laurence also runs Sunday League side Edmonton Rovers whose website is well worth a look at. Nearly every game the club have played since the early 1990's has been captured on camera!!
